A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

Also notable that the endpoint is moderate to severe Covid symptoms, not Covid positivity. The studies weren’t designed to evaluate positivity since there was no surveillance testing in either arm. I’m worried the anti-vaxxers will latch on to that as a reason not to take it.

I'm reasonably confident that the anti-vaxxers aren't going to want to take the vaccine because it's made with dangerous chemicals that will alter their DNA and they don't want to be implanted with a microchip that will either let the government track them wherever they go or that will allow Bill Gates to control their minds.

It will also "remove the God factor out of people so they won't feel God"!

I'm surprised it took this long. I'm not surprised that they hid it.

It's a pity about not following any of the recommended COVID-19 guidelines before actually getting sick. f*cker.

He's probably out there shooting helpless animals with over sized rifles because he's a real man (TM)

First Rudy's son gets it, then Don jr. gets it. It's like Passover came early.

Carson may be alive but he's been brain dead for a very long time. This man should be stripped of his medical degree. It wasn't the Oleander...

resident Trump was following my condition and cleared me for the monoclonal antibody therapy that he had previously received, which I am convinced saved my life

I look forward to hearing about the upcoming ER visits due to consumption of a poisonous plant.

Several compounds in (Oleander) nerium exhibit toxicity, and it has historically been considered a poisonous plant. However, its bitterness renders it unpalatable to humans and most animals, so poisoning cases are rare and the general risk for human mortality is low. Ingestion of larger amounts may cause nausea, vomiting, excess salivation, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea and irregular heart rhythm. Prolonged contact with sap may cause skin irritation, eye inflamation and dermatitis.
Therapeutic efficacy

Drugs derived from N. oleander have been investigated as a treatment for cancer, but have failed to demonstrate clinical utility.[45][46] According to the American Cancer Society, the trials conducted so far have produced no evidence of benefit, while they did cause adverse side effects.[47]

Won’t happen. Carson had homeopathic oleander. No ER required for consuming water that remembers being oleander...

Also, FFS. Pushing homeopathic remedies? Really? This isn’t even Watergate, it’s just stupid.

It wouldn't surprise me if he's "quarantining" with a cadre of servants / helpers / assistants / etc. But, they wouldn't be people to him...

Worst. Reality show. Ever.

The findings were perplexing. Two full doses of the vaccine appeared to be only 62% effective at preventing disease, while a half dose, followed by a full dose, was about 90% effective.

Homeopathic vaccine. How much better if you keep halving the doses?

But isn't this an anti-homepathic vaccine? You have to keep doubling the dose!

Who thought this was a good idea?

(CNN) — England is drastically reducing its quarantine period for people arriving from most destinations in a move that will potentially throw open the doors for British people wanting to take foreign vacations.
As of December 15, travelers arriving into England will have to self-isolate just five days instead of the current 14 under a new testing strategy announced by the UK government.

I've seen an awful lot of people think that if they're morally upright or something they can defy math.

It's not like we were ever taking 'quarantine' seriously compared to countries like Australia. Do so in your own home with no checking up or enforcement. Ok then...

I believe you have to best tested and return a negative result to be able to do so though. I think part of this is the new ‘mass testing’ strategy being rolled out across the UK where you can (in most regions) or will be able to get a test on demand, regardless of symptoms.

That method of achieving 90% efficacy was certainly serendipitous! The advantage of the Oxford vaccine over both the Pfizer and Moderna solutions is that it can be stored at -20oC (not -80oC) so will be a lot easier to distribute, and it costs about half as much to manufacture. If that bothers you.

I mean, it bothers us in America, because someone's going to try to make us pay for it.

It needs 2 shots too - the initial and a booster a month afterwards.

turns out someone *was* working on a coronavirus vaccine, for MERS: (LINK)

Meanwhile, at Oxford, Dr Gilbert rose through the ranks, becoming a professor at the university's prestigious Jenner Institute. She set up her own research group in a bid to create a universal flu vaccine, meaning a vaccine which would be effective against all the different strains.

In 2014, she led the first trial of an Ebola vaccine. And when the Mers - Middle East respiratory syndrome - virus struck, she travelled to Saudi Arabia to try to develop a vaccine for this form of coronavirus.

The second trial of that vaccine was just beginning when, in early 2020, Covid-19 emerged in China. Prof Gilbert quickly realised she might be able to use the same approach.

I remember a while back in here asking for more specificity than just "er, fastest vaccine was four years, so half?" and it turns out it really does all depend on *which* vaccines succeed, because of the different places they are in the pipeline.

It seems like these are a done deal? No one has said "oh yeah, everything is finished" as far as the full process, but everyone is speaking as if there are no worries that these won't roll out to the population.

I hope so. We really need some hope. Some of us, at least.

Yeah and it was 3 million from Friday through Sunday. I cannot believe the stupidity of people...

Will this be the 4th wave or will it simply get lumped into the current rise in cases?

Aren't at least some of those college kids returning home for the next month or two?

Yup.
Our son’s girlfriend will be one of those. She leaves tomorrow to fly cross country.
We will be doing a FaceTime Thanksgiving meal with the boy because although he is living with us, he can’t be unmasked outside his room here since he is unmasked with her.

That sounds like a metaphor from a sweet Christian romance novel.

or a Buck Rogers episode

167K new cases, 2K deaths (the first time since early May), and a record 88K in the hospital today.

And a million dumbf*cks flew for Thanksgiving. December's going to be a f*cking bloodbath.

We should hit our first 4k deaths day around Dec 15th, give or take around five days either way.

The thing is, once we cross over the point of no return with lack of beds, the death tolls aren't going to go up incrementally. We could have days where we lose more than 2000 in a single day.
And don't forget the doubly whammy where care workers are getting infected at an increasing rate...

Will that be what it takes for people to take this seriously?
