3DS Catch-all

Yes I enjoyed quite a few of the maps in Conquest.

Just inherited a DSi for my 7 year old daughter and curious if anyone has any old fun kids games they'd like to off load? Specifically on the hunt for Lego Friends the DS game or a good kids Mario intro. Heard the nintendogs and style savy are good too.

New 3DS system update today. Yes, November 2020.

Some exploit needed to be patched, no doubt.

It has already been pretty easy to do bad things to your handheld.

Finally my 3DS will be stable enough!

Funny thing is, I did bad things to my 3DS like an hour before that new update dropped. Though apparently most of the tools used in the process have already been updated to take the new patch into account.

I've been debating doing that for weeks, and now I'm afraid that if I turn my 3DS on it will update itself and lock myself out of doing it.

Is there much interesting stuff in the homebrew scene?

Yeah pretty much.

I'm now fully stable, and just in time to catch a nice sale on the entire Picross e series, which starts tomorrow according to NL:

Picross S5 Brings Your Next Puzzle Fix To Switch Next Week - And a Picross sale starts tomorrow!

To celebrate the new game's launch, a 20% off sale across the entire Picross S series starts tomorrow, 19th November.

A similar 50% off sale will also take place for the Picross e series available on Nintendo 3DS.

Just for context, I wonder how it compares to a PSP.

Edit: some more details. I’ve found the emulator support on PSP to be good but each one has its own directory structure, menu button mappings etc. and it was quite a pain in the ass to get working. Something more unified would be nice. GBA performance definitely falls short, some games are unplayable. I’ve also been enjoying some PSP games with fan patches.

What’s the fan translation scene like on 3DS? Also would be cool to get rid of region locking.

Stabler.

There are a few patches. Not a lot.

Emulator wise.

It's good. The New 3Ds line is slightly more powerful for that good snes emulation.

It has retro arch ported to it.

I’ve got the new 3DS (small) so that’s cool. Will investigate.

Any of this stuff unlock more CPU power in an OG 3DS?

There wasn't much in the way of fan translations of 3DS games yet last time I checked.

I browsed DS, there are a few interesting ones. The second Miles Edgeworth game is probably the biggest one. 3DS seems to be as you say.

Yeah, there are some DS ones. Seems like a combination of more stuff getting localized and the fan translation projects taking a long time and so still working on games from prior generations.

Retro game challenge 2 has been fan translated and it's good.

I just got a 2DS XL. It's, uh, a pretty sleek little handheld.

I already have a 3DS XL, but I like having a backup handheld system once something gets to the end of its life. I never even looked at the 2DS family since I assumed they were all those weird flat door stoppers that they made to be indestructable for kids, but the later models have hinges and everything!

Also the bright neon blue and black color combo is sexy.

I bought an orange and white 2DS XL for a friend and it looked way better than the galaxy one I have

Yeah. I saw that Galaxy one. It was pretty but a little... too much. I felt like I was in a Claire's retail store.

The 2DS XL might be the most refined design of the family.

I bought the New 3DS small size because I was excited about the changeable face plates. But they never really released that many of them, especially third parties.

Etsy is probably your best bet for cool unofficial designs.

My favorite fan patches have been the ones that restore the Japanese orchestral soundtracks to Dragon Quest 7 and 8. It's also cool to unlock the new 3ds cpu and cache for all games to improve performance. (DQ7 chugged a bit without it).

I will miss the new games on the 3DS

PSA. Don't panic like me if you updated your 3ds (and did custom firmware) and it doesn't boot. Download the newest version and put it on the sd card.
