Playstation 5 Catch-All

How do we feel about two threads maybe? A "PS5 availability" thread and an "actually talking about the PS5 console" thread?

Yeah, that would be nice. I keep coming in here to check out what's people thoughts are on the PS5. I've got about 20hrs into Demon Souls so far and really digging everything about the new console so far. UI takes a little time to get use to it.

It's not exactly what y'all are asking for, but I made a thread for PlayStation 5 Games You Can Play Right Now. It's all about games that are actually released and available; no talk about hardware stock or things like that.

I made a similar thread for the Switch and have found it to be useful to have a games-focused thread for that platform to stand out amongst all the speculation about Switch Pros and the like.

Demon's Souls remake has its own thread.

You may also enjoy Demon's Souls for the same reason (I don't have it, so I'm just going from this video) -

Has anyone played Miles Morales on PS4? Does it still take like 18 secs to load out of a gang hideout back into the city? I seen the PS5 clip of Miles busting through the vent & straight out into the city without any loading screen. I'm wondering if this is consistent throughout, going from interiors to the skylines of New York in an instant.

I just did three of those last night - you enter them and exit them by going through a vent with no load time whatsoever; there's nothing to indicate that they're loading a new level and clearing the old one out of memory.

I'm intrigued by its integration in Demons Souls, which will be getting tested out in the morning once I collect my PS5 from my brothers house.

Excellent regarding the load times in Miles Morales! I'm not overly hyped about MM considering it just seems more of the same (plus it's really just an iteration on the PS4 engine) as Spiderman 2018 but with weaker villians.

I really wanna see what Insomniac can do making the full sequel built from the ground up on PS5. Can they actually make use of the SSD for streaming the city in at ridiculous speeds? have the streets filled with lots of environmental furniture (to a level you couldn't get on PS4) that can be interacted with. I do think it will be a quite a jump when we do see Spiderman 2, at least that's my wish.

And it seems impossible to imbed the video. Kind of a cool mod.

WOW! I might have chosen something other than grey, but the PS button and colored face buttons are perfect. I took a silver sharpie to my PS button which makes it look way better, but not nearly as good as that does.

Dangit...must resist urge to disassemble my new toy...

Has anyone tried Sackboy yet? I've been considering picking it up because I enjoyed Astro Bot so much and now am in the mood for another game of that type. Being able to play coop with my son would be a bonus as well.

Audio setting option question!

Are you able to force compressed Dolby or DTS 5.1 output so that signal can go through the optical out on your TV rather than 2 channel Linear PCM? Right now, Switch cannot do this but PS4 can.

From what I’ve read about the PS5 vs XSX, it sounds like the controller is the real differentiator. I love my Elite for my Xbox One but is the Dualsense really that much of a game changer? If it transforms the gameplay experience like some have described I may try to jump on PS5 when they are available. If it’s gimmicky then that will be less interesting since I vastly prefer the Xbox stick layout.

And I hate the DualShock controller with a passion for frame of reference, main reason I could not use my PS4. But I’m a big fan of new experiences like VR so if this is a new way to experience gaming I’m in.

Overall I really like the DualSense, but I hate the PS "button" that's not shaped like a button. I could always find the PS button on the DS3 & DS4 by feel (there wasn't one on the DS2, was there?), but my thumb can't make sense of the weird squiggly shape of what they replaced it with and refuses to acknowledge it as a button; it just feels like a bumpy area. It's interesting in that it teaches me that a simple shape is far easier to acknowledge by touch than a complicated one, which I'd never thought of before (but I'll bet you a blind person would think is obvious).

Also, for some reason every time I reach for it I wind up hitting the thumbsticks, which has never happened to me in my previous two decades of Playstation ownership. Not sure why it's happening, but it's definitely a thing.

Also also, I got a notice that a patch had downloaded for Shadow Complex Remastered, which was a game I'd rushed through the week before the PS5 release because it was on the list Sony released of 10 PS4 games that wouldn't play on the PS5. Fired it up and, yep, it now works on the PS5. Most of the rest of the games on that list are pretty forgettable, but I hope Crytek can issue a patch for Robinson: The Journey, which was one of the better launch-window PSVR games (but I'm not holding my breath, because Crytek went through a restructuring shortly after it was released and I think they canned that studio).

Also also also: did Sony give all PS5 owners free access to Playstation Now, their streaming service? I've never signed up for it, but I noticed a number of the games in the store had the PS Now logo and "Stream" or "Download" where there'd normally be a "Purchase" button, so on a lark I tried out a PS2 and a PS3 game. [Edit: just checked my email, and I've got transaction receipts for a $0 "purchase" of both games, with "(90 days)" appended to the names of the games, so I guess Sony gave us 3 free months of PS Now.]

The PS2 game, Primal, must have been remastered as a PS4-playable "PS2 Classic", because it was downloadable and played via backwards compatibility, and the PS3 game, Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus, could only be played via streaming. Streaming was playable, but I'm pretty sure noticeably worse visually than actually playing it on a local PS3, and the PS2 game mostly looked as good as a PS2 game could in 2020, but with some strange flickers around things that were "pasted" on the textures - drawings on cave walls or fire on torches, for instance. I haven't tried Stadia or Microsoft's xCloud, but I suspect Sony's going to have to improve their tech if they want to grow PS Now into a credible competitor.

Man I just saw an article stating that the Series X won’t be widely available until April or May. Given how much more popular the PS5 is, I’m guessing we won’t see being able to just log on to Amazon and buy one until sometime this summer.

I don’t remember supply being that tight the last gen but I’m sure the PS4 was tough to find for a long time. I started with Xbox so only had to wait about a week before they were piling up on store shelves...

I’m starting to lead in the opposite direction. The more I hear of Demon Souls the more it sounds like it might be too archaic in it’s systems for me to enjoy. It sounds like you need to do a lot of grinding and there are many oppressive boss door gauntlets. At the moment I think I’ll watch the RKG boys play it. I’ll be interested to hear what you make of it. Every time I see the visuals my resolve weakens.

Spider-Man 2018 is rather high on my game of the year list. As a Spidey/Marvel fan I adored the game. I can’t wait to play Miles Morales. Just seeing his flaily swinging and combat moves gives me a lot of joy. Ideally I want to resist playing it until I have a PS5 but I may not be able to. I could always play it through twice.

I honestly don't think its any less grindy than Dark Souls, I definitely found Demons Souls less difficult. I think Bloodborne & Sekiro have really upped my skill level since playing the orginal on PS3. I think it should be a far more comfortable ride, not without its bumps but I'm definitely expecting to get through it much easier.

It's not as friendly in terms of shortcuts but you can still Usian Bolt it past enemies, like I done many times in Sekiro to get back to bosses or areas you've previously reached. Its great to be able to leave a difficult boss in an area like The Valley Of Defilement, go back to the Nexus, go to the Tower Of Latria archstone & try to progress forward there.

I'll report back on how my play through goes on the remake.

For me, it's a difference of load times, frames per second, and ray tracing reflections.

60 frames per second is the one I'd most like. Personally. As it is an actual proper benefit to gameplay. (Not that 30 frames per second is not fine. We've lived with it for a long, long time. 60 just happens to be objectively better.) The other two, along with the visual bells and whistles such as draw distance and increased texture detail (which I notice only with a spot the difference side by side in this instance), have next to no impact for my experience. Combat. Gadgets. Traversal. Story. They're unaffected.

I fully expect fans to enjoy either release. And those who opted in on PS5 for a tech showcase, or for something new upon launch, to feel the same as they did with the prior PS4 installment. (Unless I sorely underestimate the draw of technical oomph and visual fidelity - even to a moderate degree - to reframe an experience.)

If you're going to remain with PS4 for a while and the urge for more Spider-Man is strong. I'd opt in. Unless you've a lot else to play, like me, and the 49.99 price tag seems a little steep for a somewhat glorified DLC built on the 2018 original. That wait may just see a PS5 materialize where the PS4 once was. Maybe.

I absolutely love Demon's Souls on the PS5. Playing this game at 60fps is a big difference from the previous Souls games on console. That said, if you've played the others and weren't a fan, don't bother here. It isn't going to sway you.

I’m a fan of Dark Souls. I was going to say a ‘big’ fan but having only played through the game twice doesn’t feel like it qualifies compared to some (adored Bloodborne as well.) What I’m hearing from some quarters is that, as the game has it’s origins before Dark Souls, it lacks some of the elements that made that game so great and some of it’s fairness and accessibility (which is a funny notion.) It’s good to get some push back on that impression though. I’d love to experience the game.

I was watching a video about backwards compatibility recently and they were showing games like God of War running on the new console. I’ve never really noticed any problems with 30 frames per second but, whilst watching that video, I was really struck by how fluid the movement looked. Everyone seemed to be moving just a little bit more smoothly and crisply. I was feeling happy to finally be seeing the difference that 60 frames a second makes until the narrator on the video said, “of course all these games are running at 30 frames a second.”

Ray tracing is a big boon. When used well it adds an extra sense of realism and atmosphere to a game. I can’t wait to see how games use it and the general extra level of processing power to wow me with visuals. Visually Demon Souls is friggin’ awesome.

Best Buy black friday games went live just after 1am. But the PS5s that they are supposed to have available today (Sunday) did not yet.

Nobody sure the time. So keep watching, good luck.

Edit: apparently Kohl's had a bundle tonight with extra controller and Miles Morales. But it's gone now.

Actually Kohl's came back in stock. Ordered.

We'll see if it actually happens and ships. Not super confident.

Same. Placed my order at 1:24am.

Kiddo woke me up about 15 minutes earlier looking for milk lol.

I originally told myself no bundles, but I’m getting impatient and realized I went through 3 PS4 controllers, and the PS5 will be around plenty long enough for my daughter to start playing with me if she’s interested. I also never played Spiderman.

Higgledy, Demon's Souls is totally awesome. It does lack some of the things that make Dark Souls so awesome, including the various covenant systems, and the interconnectedness of DS1 (which sadly seems to be fairly unique to DS1, with a little of it in DS3 and Bloodborne).

But still, it's totally awesome. The new version looks amazingly gorgeous. I bought a PS3 just to play DeS, and never regretted it.

Blind_Evil wrote:

Hah so yeah you placed yours before I saw the add to cart button greyed out. Then I checked 10 min later after I saw some twitter activity and it let me add to cart and order.

Saw some other twitter fools saying they bought multiples. Maybe Kohl's canceled multiple orders and that's why more stock came back? Probably wishful thinking.

Or they just botched it and oversold and are going to cancel a lot of orders tomorrow.

Got a text from my credit card company confirming the charge. But still no order confirmation email. So... not feeling great.

And yeah I couldn't justify the Gamestop bundles a couple days ago. Especially when they were throwing in $60 PS+ and now 36 hours later they have PS+ for $45 on sale.

But this? One extra controller I think I can live with. Planning to get Miles Morales and Demon's Souls no matter what.

Did they happen to mention a shipping estimate?

I, dumbass that I am, checked out as a guest in aTwitter window and did not screenshot my order confirmation. So I got no way of checking in until I get the order confirmation unless I’m mistaken

And yeah I wouldn’t be shocked or particularly distraught if my order got canceled tomorrow. My reason for wanting the PS5 right now is weak: I mostly want to play PS4 games on a machine that doesn’t sound ready for takeoff at any given time.

Holy sh*t I got an order confirmation email from Kohl's. Expected arrival as early as Friday. But no shipping notice yet. Still... promising.

And the shipping estimate is in the email, and has a button to check your order status. I also did the checkout as guest. Guess it can look up on order number once you have it.

Brilliant. Thanks. I’m getting back to being excited (Also, Spikeout sent me a video of his character punching a knight to death whilst dressed only in his underpants; which helped.)

Got mine too, November 27-Dec 4. Heh. Neeeever would have imagined I would buy a console from Kohls.

Also I uh, what can I use this $180 in Kohls Cash on? Lol

Is the DualSense a game-changer? I'm not quite sure I'd go that far, but the level of additional immersion the haptics and especially the adaptive triggers offers is really unique to the PS5 right now. Playing PS4 games and feeling the rumble and then firing up a PS5 game you can feel how much more nuanced the rumble is and the degree of control developers have over it. The adaptive triggers are really quite amazing and I love the feel they add. So far they've been put to good use in Astrobot, Call of Duty and WRC 9.

If developers put the haptics and triggers to work I think they do offer a very unique and heightened experience. Is it enough to make the difference between consoles? Hard to say, but so far I've been really impressed with the controller as a whole. It'll be really interesting to see how 3rd party developers use this, but I think it extends enough beyond gimmick that it may actually see wide adoption even on cross-platform titles.

I do agree that the PS button in the middle is really easy to miss by feel, but that's a minor complaint for me in what is otherwise an excellent controller. And not just an excellent controller but something new.

I played both the PS4 and PS5 versions of No Man's Sky on the PS5, thanks to Sony's idiotic way of handling multiple versions of games. It was immediately apparent that I'd finally booted up the PS5 version when I took off in my ship, because the triggers gave me a Right Stuff-style "holy crap I'm sitting on top of a sustained explosion" bit of feedback when I fired the rockets. Very cool.
