Nintendo Switch - Games You Can Play Right Now

Anybody play Severed?

Devs of guacamelee. Looks like touch screen only, a 3DS then iOS now Switch game. Has good reviews and I really enjoyed both Guac games. But I can't find any mention of it on the site on the old 3ds thread or anything?

On sale for $5 now. Just looking for some opinions.

I played it and really loved it. I played it for my PSP, however, and the touch screen on that was nothing to write home about if memory serves. So the lack of precision was very frustrating. BUT, it didn't stop me from playing. It is a crazy addictive game. I loved it. I imagine it would be great on the Switch. And for $5...I think you are in good shape.

Alright, so I finished the demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, and it was.....fine? I think the story and lore is probably the thing that is going to interest me the most, as it ties to one of my favorite games of all time. The gameplay is sufficiently mashy, although after watching some videos and seeing combos that are possible, it looks like there's potentially a lot more depth than I was able to dig into or understand in my hour or two with the demo. That said, while the combat was very mashy, it didn't feel like particularity satisfying mash. I guess I'm sort of comparing the combat to something like Nier Automata, since I finished that recently.

I could probably get into the combat enough to see the story through, especially if the combat gets better over time. That said, unless this thing gets rave reviews or great word of mouth, I'll probably pass on paying full price at launch, and will be looking for a sale down the line instead. So with that in mind, I'm glad I played the demo first!

You'll probably be best off watching youtube vids after it launches. Combat in these games doesn't ever rise above decent.

I think the biggest challenge facing Age of Calamity is attaching Breath of the Wild expectations, appeal, and the audience, to Warrior / musou gameplay. The game is not going to be engaging in any significantly similar way as BotW. It is and always will be a flashy button masher, and in this case, has the veneer of a loved game and IP.

The game will probably get a lot of unfair criticism and have a lot of people saying it's not that good. A lot of that, probably from people who never would have looked at a Warriors game if BotW was not attached to it.
For me, if it executes as well as the original Hyrule Warriors, then it's a hit in my book.

Also, I cannot say I'm surprised hearing of framerate issues (since A_Unicycle brought it up - over a week ago) considering the original BotW had issues, especially in certain town areas at launch. I actually wondered how they even made Age of Calamity work on a Switch when they announced it with so many enemies on screen. I would be surprised if I didn't see single digit framerates at times in the final game.

TLDR: If you expect anything more than brain-dead button mashing action with an atrocious framerate set in the BotW world, you will be disappointed.

I don't think BotW and Age of Calamity are on the same engine. One is a physics-based open world while the other is meant to have millions of guys on screen. Musou games tend to have crap framerates, but this demo was especially bad.

Heaven help me, but I now have 110 stars in Mario Galaxy. I don't know why, but against all odds I'm going for 120, apparently.

240. This is the way

Galaxy is a great game. I'm glad more people are getting to enjoy it. Like a lot of Wii games, it got lost a bit in the backlash against the platform.

There was a backlash against the Wii? Because it seemed like a novelty and not a "real" game system?

Yep. It was a big hit with a broader audience, but for a lot of the traditional gaming audience it was a gimmicky Wii Sports machine that quickly gathered dust. Consequently, some real gems were overlooked.

I don't think DSGamer falls into that category, too be clear. I'm just happy that Galaxy is available to a new group of players in case they missed it before. Hopefully Galaxy 2 isn't far behind.

You spotted a wild double-post!

There was also a ton of shovelware that I think bothered people after a while. I felt that way.
I still really enjoyed my Wii.
That and Nintendo's lack of online capability becoming more and more obvious.

And graphics. Lack of third party outside of shovelware.

Lots of reasons.

Honestly, going back to the Wii now really drivers home what a cluster that console was in your hands. Even Ninty's own 1st person stuff wasn't immune - i had to look up how to beat the first boss in Skyward Sword recently, just because the controls are so wooly and finicky that even though the game explained what to do, i wasn't able to get the wiimotes to behave.

Also all/most of the shooting games could be two handed but the trigger would be the forward hand. WTF!?!?

I'm playing Galaxy mostly in handheld mode, so I know I'm not getting the true, original experience. I'm doing some levels with the Joycons detached like Wiimotes, but mostly I'm using touchscreen. I prefer it so far. And I'm glad for the Y button allowing me to avoid using motion controls to spin.

My reason for not getting to this game earlier is that I had too many other systems to play and by the time the Wii came out I struggled with non-HD consoles if I'm being completely honest. I didn't like how it looked compared to other systems, so I stuck with 360, PS3 and DS/3DS.

Apparently an update for the Mario collection to allow inverted camera controls, and to use GameCube controller in TV mode. Nice.

I kinda hated the Wii. Not because of the games or controls, but because of the absolute dog sh*t quality video output. The poor image reproduction that was apparently an SDK bug. The awful anamorphic widescreen on a console releasing during the explosion of HDTVs. It was an awful, trash piece of video output hardware.

There's lot of great Wii games that I refused to play until Dolphin came along. And that's a reason I am so on board for more Wii ports to Switch, so that I can enjoy the games without looking at video output that still literally pisses me off to this day. I didn't mind that it was only 480p and not 720p/1080p, but outputting such a bad 480p picture, ugh.

Having put a fair amount of time into both the Wii version and the Switch remake recently, I don't think there's anything particularly precious about the "true, original experience.". While the revamped touch / tilt controls occasionally feel a little hinky and remind one that they are not what the game was designed for, to be honest, the original Wiimote controls feel a little hinkier than I remember too.

The game is strong enough to survive such things. If you're enjoying it with the touch controls, that's what matters.

Sorry, y'all. I didn't mean to set off the Wii hot take parade.

But have y'all heard about this "console war" that's been brewing between the SNES and Genesis? That one's probably ripe for some hot takes.

Does that mean Sunshine will take advantage of the analog triggers?

I still play games on the Wii from time to time. It's the only system that has Wii Fishing Resort, My Fitness Coach, and Endless Ocean.

All I know is that the Sega Game Gear separates the men from the boys.

FTFY

Late to the party, but honestly, regardless of how antiquated the console feels now or where feelings towards it went due to shovelware and poor HD graphics output, the Wii was still a special system to me. In part because I still remember the midnight launch where I and my gaming club in College picked ours up, took it into a class room that was frequently left unlocked, hooked it up to a projector, and took Wii Sports and Twilight Princess for a spin. Using those motion controls for the first time as a group was a great time, even if it was immediately clear they weren't as good or precise as Nintendo's marketing had promised.

Resident Evil 4 still plays best with a Wiimote, Dead Space: Extraction was a delightful surprise, and despite its trash story I still feel the desire to replay Metroid: Other M every so often. While there are plenty of games on the system that found life elsewhere, there are some that you can't find anywhere else or just don't play the same as they had with the Wiimote.

I'm curious if we'll feel the same way about the Switch some day. That really neat HD Rumble was almost immediately forgotten beyond 1-2-Switch, and based on what others here and a friend of mine have reported, Sony's Dual Sense has already pushed the tech further. Just like the Wii was an under-powered machine, it feels like even Nintendo is struggling with how under-powered the Switch is. I don't even really use the JoyCons, and when I do it's not for the sake of motion controls.

Just like the Wii, Nintendo has released a system that feels like this great revelation when it first launches, but as you grow familiar with it, all the flaws stand out more strongly.

I'm at 119 stars in Mario Galaxy and I don't know if I'll ever get to 120. I don't know who dreamed up the purple coin levels, but I really dislike them. I wish I could hand my Switch to a friend to "get me past" the Toy Galaxy purple coin level.

I would gladly be that friend. Stupid covid.

Awww. Stupid covid indeed.

Is there a Hyrule Warriors thread? I got to play the demo the last couple nights and it was pretty fun.

Doubt I'll get it day 1 but I think I'll get it. Just want to keep up with impressions this weekend.
