I can confirm that VPN into Australia (Hi, Perth!) and running through Ubisoft Connect works.

Just connecting VPN through Australia and then launching connect doesn't seem to do anything for me, just says not available yet.

Works for me. Connect did make me sign on (and Google Authenticate) again, like it did when I VPN'd into London for an early start for Watch Dog: Legions. If you don't have to sign in, maybe the VPN isn't actually connected?

I've been in-and-out [make mine Animal Style] all day. Works even though I bought through Epic. Connect VPN; Launch Ubisoft Connect; Navigate to game and start.

If I connect the VPN and then try to start using the shortcut Epic installed, I get an Epic Launcher "game not available" error.

Save early and often. Some reviewers have mentioned rough auto save frequency and with crashes that could make for some particularly crushing progress loss

Just curious how widespread this is. I want to play it (tomorrow), but I also want to not lose progress.

Does anyone know if there is ship combat? I’ve watched and read some reviews and haven’t heard anything about it. AC:Odyssey was one of my favorite games of this (last?) gen. But I did not like the ship combat

Doesn't sound like it. You can do quite a lot of traveling via your longship down rivers and creeks, but apparently the only combat you can do from it is sniping guys with your bow until you disembark. This isn't Black Flag/Odyssey style naval combat.

Well anecdotal single evidence piece but I think it tried to crash to reboot the first time I launched. An hour in and no other issues so might have been a one time thing.

30 minutes in impressions:

  • Sound design is amazing. Both the soundtrack and the audio in the game is A+++
  • CLIMB ANYTHING IS IN BABY
  • Visually stunning. Odyssey was good but also cartoonish in it's vibrance. This is closer to Origins in colour palette and visual appeal but less "everything is sand coloured"
  • I'm having a hard time telling the "good" Vikings from the "bad" Vikings so combat is a little tough at times
  • Combat isn't good, it is GREAT. Easily the best in an AC game and probably one of the best implementations I've seen of open world combat in any game. Moves away from the cartoonish Odyssey cooldown "press Q to win" model, towards Origins but with more options and flexibility
  • Did I mention it's pretty?
  • Load times are horrendous on a NVME drive (15-20 seconds) so I can't imagine how awful it is on an old console or disk drive
  • Inventory system is closer to Origins and less "Destiny" shlooter-esque that Odyssey put in
  • Surprising lack of map vomit. Very constrained so far and doesn't feel quite as Ubi as other games have

downloading now.........

Yeah, I had a crash to reboot first time I ran it as well. Only other issue I've noticed is an occasional savefile that is titled "Corrupt Data" rather than the location. Second the recommendation to manually save before exiting the game, though I think autosaves occur often enough that you'll probably not lose much if your last autosave was corrupted.

I will not buy this until I at least finish the main story of Odyssey...

Try doing the Viking sense or whatever it's called (pushing down right thumb stick), I think that might help.

So what do you think of Valhalla so far? Looking forward to your thoughts!

Can someone give me an extremely brief summary of Layla’s story from the Odyssey DLC? 100%ed the main game but had no interest in the game afterwards.

Kotaku has you covered

Thank you and I’m sorry I asked.

I'm curious to see some tech comparisons. I have access to the game on PC through uplay+ and have a decent enough pc, but I'm tempted to get it on Series X if it's not a a huge downgrade. I would prefer the big screen and couch for a 60 hours game, plus want something to play on my new system.

Played about an hour so far, and yeah, it's pretty rad. Combat seems cool so far but I have one complaint.

Why on Earth would you make square (X on xbox) the dodge button? Why isn't it cross (A on xbox) like... every other game where you dodge? Very strange decision.

Dodge has been Square/X in both Origins and Odyssey prior to this, so I'm glad they're staying consistent.

I know, but in between I play other games and they all use the bottom face button. Drives me nuts.

This doesn't unlock on Epic for another 45 minutes. Not cool!

Had a bug in the blade training bit, couldn't assassinate from a ledge (2nd dummy). Reloaded some saves and messed around for an hour or so. Then killed the other dummy's in the right way and it carried on fine. One to note.

Huh. I thought it was PM. This means I’ll get a tiny bit of extra time with it after work.

Not listening!
NOT LISTENING!

Spoiler:

Life is crazy enough right now that I couldn't play even if I got it, so at least I probably won't cave before December or January... Probably...

My wife adores vikings and is enamored with me playing this game. It’s gonna be a loooong playthrough.

The haven’t played an AC game in earnest since Black Flag and man the early levels are hard. Maybe this is a sign I need to go back and dig into Odyssey more.

Anyone else struggling while using mouse and keyboard?

PS - for those of you on the fence, it’s pretty great so far but unless you love Vikings you can probably hold off getting it first day.

Only difficulty I'm facing right now is in melee combat. I had the same issue with Odyssey in the beginning as well. Once I find the combo of weapons and/or shields that works for me, I'll be fine.

It does seem a little finicky between parkour and jump.

That’s what makes it a true Assassins Creed game.

The M&K controls are a little awkward but sticking with them for now.

I’ve found mêlée combat to be better in this game than either Origins or Odyssey. It’s important to be using light hits to regain stamina, then heavy hits when there’s big openings, and block/parry liberally. Try out the different weapons as mentioned, I’ve enjoyed double axes, axe and shield, but have truly clicked with the two-handed poleaxe

Please see my avatar as that pretty much sums up the face I'm making with regards to people using M&K in a 3rd person action game.

Ubisoft apologizes for ableist language in Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Pointed out by the founder of an accessibility gaming website who later had to make her twitter private due to attacks from Angry Internet Men.

Seriously, f*ck those guys.

Ubisoft, by contrast, was genuinely apologetic and promised to remove the "disfigured face" language in a future update.

Only this time, instead of having problems skipping across huts in the Caribbean I'm performing a pirouette on my long ship's figure head instead of jumping to shore.
