You can upgrade all of your heirlooms so that they scale to level 50. It does get pretty expensive to upgrade ALL of your heirlooms 4 times to get them to the max level. (I think it's something like 500G + 1000G + 2000G + 5000G to get each to their max level).
I've done it for most of the heirlooms that I can level most classes. Even if I have some pieces not ideal for each particular spec, they're still great for speeding up levelling (by extending your rested XP).

It is expensive. I just got one set for each armor type with no regard to secondary stats. Those dont matter for levelling much.

I believe it is now 7500 g for the fourth level upgrade.

Once you hit those higher levels and newer expansions the gear comes in quick enough that the heirloom isn't as important.

I have heirlooms in every possible slot on the mage toon that I'm leveling now, and the slots without heirlooms (boots, bracers, belt, gloves) fell way behind. I felt a little gimpy. Or maybe it's because mages are squishy soft. Or maybe I'm terrible at mage. Who's to say?

I ended up using the new Relic of the Past feature to fill in some gaps. Once I got him to 45, the base BFA gear is available.

Heirlooms seem to me a set-it-and-forget-it mechanism where I don't have to worry about most gear slots until lvl 50.

I reinstalled WoW and started playing a new character up to level 20. I'm giving serious consideration to buying a sub for a month or 6. Anyone want to send me a RaF code for free loot?

Edit: Thanks, Medmey!

No problem. thanks you

I wish Blizzard would hurry up and get their controller support sorted out. It's almost there if you know which console commands turn it on, but it's still got some limitations that make it useless for my purposes.

My wife plays with a controller using JoyToKey, which works decently but has some annoyances. We've tried using the Console Port mod, but it has the same fatal flaw as Blizzard's implementation. By default they use the triggers as modifiers to the other buttons, so they can fit more abilities on the controller. My wife started playing video games with Halo 3 and thus prefers the triggers to be the primary action inputs. She also doesn't want to have modifier buttons at all; she wants to use the D-pad to cycle the buttons to different sets of inputs. She used to have a job doing lights for rock concerts so she's used to paging between banks of controls in urgent, timing-sensitive situations.

So I’ve leveled a few new alliance toons up into the 20s and I think I realize my current boredom. I love group content which is why I’m playing WOW vs Baldurs Gate. But it’s way too hard to get a dungeon group. Maybe I need to just press on and hit 50 then wait for the expansion.

I think certain expansion's dungeons are more popular than others. You might need to go into the right Chromie time to queue for the more popular dungeons.

Or go as a tank or a healer. I queue as DPS only when I think I should run an instance but don't really want to.

Also worth noting is that after 15 minutes of queue time in your "chromie time" queue, the game will then ask you if you'd like to switch to all, and you retain the bonus for random dungeon. Haven't had a queue go past 15 minutes with that, the moment I queue for all, I'm usually in one instantly after that, even as DPS.

So I just watched the cutscene that plays just before getting the Heart of Azeroth, and I have questions. Since when were there literal super-planetary gods in space ships? I last played the Draenor expansion, so was this part of Legion, or BFA?

I'm working my way through all of the BFA questlines now, and enjoying them. There's a decent bit of variety and unique things to do in there. I suppose I ought to go back and try the Legion stuff too... but how?

Yeah, it's Legion. I went WAY Sci-fi. Easiest way is really make a new character and then a character lets you pick which expansion to level through. You pick Legion and it will send you on your way.
Note that part of the expansion is now deactivated story wise or whatever which is too bad, but you'll still get most of it.

Wowhead suggests that going through the Chromie Caverns of Time will let me start up Legion content. I'll need to clear my quest backlog before undertaking that.

That was legion stuff, although there are a lot of giant space gods in earlier expansions. Lich King had a good number of those features in the raids and in the snowy areas quests.

Hm, this might be my miss, then. I did a fair bit of Dungeons, but not much in the way of Raids after vanilla (and maybe Burning Crusades? I don't remember, it was a while ago). I think I play MMOs wrong -- single-player, mostly. I get anxious in parties (both MMO and RL).

Theres a big tower thing on northrend in the mountain zone, with Loken at the top, he's sort of one of those titan gods, and then in Uldum there's more avatars or whatever of titans you fight/rescue.

They've made it even more single player friendly or just don't have specific online friends friendly in my opinion. You're not going to be doing the top top dungeon difficulties and raids right away, but the rest seems pretty open.

So here's how Chromie Time ends for those of you who haven't gotten that far:

* As soon as I hit 50, I got a pop-up from Magni to go to Silithus to pick up my neck piece. (I skipped it for now.)

* As soon as I left my garrison, I got a 1 minute timer to the end of Chromie time. When the timer expired, I was ported to the steps to the Stormwind Keep.

* When I hit SW, I got a pop-up to come to Boralus to collect my Kul Tiran set. (YAY; skipped that, too, for now)

* And when I got back to my garrison, all the creatures in Shadowmoon Valley were now down to lvl 40 sted lvl 49. (YAY)

One question for anyone who has leveled to 50 during the pre-patch: Do you get any upgrades right off the bat? Or do you have to start doing BFA quests at your current iLvl (which is 54 and is terrible, esp for a mage).

One more tip: If you hit 50 and decide you want a garrison, go to your portal room in your capital city, find the portal to Draenor, get to Shadowmoon/Frostfire, then look for the yellow ! near your garrison. I got to skip the Draenor intro quest line (which I had just done on my new mage) and boy howdy I was glad for that.

The only reason I mention the portal is that there's a portal from an underground cave in Pandaria to far northern Gorgrond that also bypassed the intro quests but you no longer have to take that round-about way.

For whatever reason Chromie time never popped on my new shaman. I went through all the intro quests in BFA and still couldn’t pick up the quest to switch expansions. It’s ok though since I want to unlock the Kul Tirans and leveling through BFA is a good way to do that without backtracking.

I think you can just go and talk to her in Stormwind/Orgrimmar and set the expansion you want without a quest?

That's how I did it. My mage was ~lvl 15 when the pre-patch came out.

I'm guessing JDZ ended up in the BFA zones and just went with it? New Kul Tiran toons by default start in Boralus.

I don't think I did. I think I still started in SW.

I encountered a bug where Chromie won’t let me switch campaigns on my dwarf shaman. When I go talk to her she keeps telling me I can’t time travel yet, despite just finishing the first area around Boralus.

But since I haven’t unlocked Kul Tirans, this a a good way to do it. I’m now in Stormsong in my late 20s and should be done with all main quests by the time I hit 50 so I can roll right into Najatar.

You have to start in BFA no upgrades. Though you can talk to Nathanos or Alliance equivalent on the ship in Zuld or Bor to activate world quests. No need to actually quest in BFA.

But also tomorrow with pre-patch event ilvl 100s will drop from that stuff so gearing today will change tomorrow and be much easier.

Well sh*t, I've been gearing up to ilvl 58 with all my BFA questing, including getting these nifty pieces that give bonuses based on my Heart of Azeroth level. (Is that the Kul Tiran set that Enix mentioned above?)

This is the Kul Tiran set (aka heritage armor).

Most of the races (all of the allied races, most of the old school races) have cosmetic armor sets for hitting certain milestones. I've rocked the dwarf set on my main for the entire expansion.

Merphle, you're thinking of the Azerite head, chest and shoulder pieces.

And, yes, the pre-patch gear is i100. BUT .... you have to grind it out. Gear costs tokens, and each piece is 15 tokens. There are some things (scourgestones) that drop from mobs that you can turn in for tokens, but it looks like dailies will be the way to go, and most dailies won't be available until Week 2 (ie Nov 17). No one will gear up quickly, in other words.

No telling how bad these mobs will hurt, so I'd keep doing WQs to gear up. The HoA is still good until SL comes out, and that's pretty easy to boost at low levels if you just do current content.

Here are details about the pre-patch event.

I am weak.

IMAGE(https://i.imgur.com/LbLrm1d.png)

I should probably go ahead and buy Shadowlands through Battle.net. I've bought a box for every other expansion, and I like having them arranged on my shelf, but it looks like this release is digital-only except for the overpriced collector's edition.

So my Heart of Azeroth was at level 8 (yay, I got to unlock all 3 tiers of the 3 pieces I had acquired already). Then I took on a campaign quest that awarded me the 7th Legionnaire's Hood, which has tiers from level 15 to 40 or something like that. I sighed, and figured this would be a piece that I'd never end up using, since the base stats weren't much better than my previous, and the previous had useful Azerite bonuses.

Then I unlocked the Heart Forge, which immediately leveled my necklace to 50. Nice.

Edit: Old news to everyone here, I'm sure, but I chortled mightily.
