Welcome folks, and happy “102nd Anniversary of the end of World War I” week! Yes folks, after 4 miserable, long years, where each outrage seemed worse than the last, an all-consuming conflict that threatened to consume civilization was suddenly over. Then there was a pandemic. You may all celebrate by dancing anyway.

It’s a new dawn. The Xbox SeriesX and PS5 are here, along with enough heavy hitters to feel like Christmas and your birthday all at once. The PS5 has more ‘sclusies and a cool new controller, while the XBox SeriesX has backwards compatibility and Game Pass. It’s a bevy of riches this week—easily 10 of these games could have earned GOTW in a less crowded lineup.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War parachutes in for the launch party. It’s the first time a COD has been jointly developed since Modern Warfare 3, with Raven Software mostly handling the single-player campaign while Treyarch was subbed in to fix the multiplayer. Yes, the single-player campaign is coming back to COD. There’s also a new multiplayer mode: Fireteam. You split into 10 teams of 4, and somehow try to get anything done. One Fireteam scenario, Dirty Bomb, tasks you to find uranium and strap it to various bombs around the map. Once a bomb has enough uranium, it explodes and covers that part of the map with radiation, causing sickness and debuffs to players inside. Sound like fun?

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla jumps into the fray with both shields blazing. Assassin’s Creed has had a number of dips and peaks in its 21-game history—for me, they get it right when the setting is so enticing that you forget your qualms with the gameplay. Odyssey had its issues, but the Greek setting and Spartan kick pulled me through 80 happy hours to finish the main questlines. Origins had essentially the same combat and stealth systems, but I got bored with fighting alligators after about 20 hours. I also like how Creed is going more RPG, with dialogue and character choices. Valhalla iterates on everything that was in Odyssey but in the Viking setting—and that’s good enough for me. After stubbornly sticking with a spear through most of Odyssey for RP reasons, I’m interested in the new mix-n-match, dual-wielding mechanics. And yes, you can even dual-wield two shields. Some old-school features are also returning, like social stealth, where you can pull down your hoodie to hide in a moving crowd. It’s exciting to be excited about Assassin’s Creed games again.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a sequel to one of the best games on PS4. ‘Nuff sed. Insomniac’s rendition of web-swinging and web-slinging is so fun to play, you don’t even have to think about it. The previous game was strong on story, traversal, combat, and mission setpieces, but didn’t overload its world with icon-fatigue—I expect this one to deliver to the same standard.

On top of all THAT, there’s the major expansion Destiny 2: Beyond Light, which promises to shake things up and usher in a new era for Destiny. Sackboy: A Big Adventure takes Sackboy 3D. Yakuza: Like A Dragon finally goes cross-platform, along with its controversial change to turn-based combat and a new protagonist. Just Dance 2021 drops with The Weekend and The Weeknd. Plus, there’s a remastered Demon’s Souls. And don’t forget Farming Simulator 19: Alpine Farming Expansion which brings the idyllic mountain regions of Europe to your farming maps.

There’s a lot to like this week, even if you aren’t getting a new console; everything is still coming out on the current consoles. For me, it’s a toss-up between Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. Given that one of my lockdown faves was bingeing on the adventures of Uhtred of Bebbanberg in The Last Kingdom, I’ll give a very narrow GOTW win to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for having a new, old world to explore rather than old, New York.

Comments

Apparently Assassins Creed is just my starter game for xbox consoles now. Black Flag was the first game I played on Xbox One, Origins was the first game I played on the One X, and now I’ve got Valhalla and the Series X coming this week.

Well, props on the loooooooooooong lists of games with, by my count, 37 different consoles out now.

Yakuza Like a Dragon and Sakuna for me please.

Eyeing Miles Morales for PS4 since it's cross buy. That might hold me until I finally snag a PS5.

I tried to like Gears:Tactics, I really did.
