Game Creation/Design Catch All

I'm about to do this course on Unity 2D if anyone is interested in doing it along with me. We can chat about the lessons, help each other, etc etc.

I decided to abandon what I was doing elsewhere and come back and finish this course up. I'm working on the last project, digging in to tile maps. Cool stuff.

Nice! I'm still on the adventure game. I took a detour to do another c# class in between.

Beware the adventure game. When they said "finish it up on your own," I thought I'd take a couple of hours to do so. It ended up taking me 20 hours to finish it. Those things get humungous pretty quickly.

Thanks for the warning. If you ever want to collaborate on something, let me know!

Will do!

I'm making good progress in the tile map tutorial game. About 1/3 of the way done.

I found this course on Udemy that I want to do next. It looks fantastic:
Unity 2D Game Developer Course Farming RPG

Probably everyone knows about it, but just in case, Humble is doing a bundle on Unity Games & Game Dev Assets, maybe someone could find something useful

https://www.humblebundle.com/softwar...

$29 for $1500 of software. Damn.

Guess that's why the average is $22

That's a crazy amount of amazing plugins for dirt cheap. Bought.

Thanks for the heads up! The games don't look like much and some of the assets are kind of dumpy, but there are some really nice-looking ones in there too. I just picked up the full pack.

As an aside, I'm taking a few weeks to learn SQL so I can use larger data sets in Unity games. I'm about halfway done with a course in MySQL, making enjoyable and steady progress.

I bought it for Clayxels.
The easy character controller might come in handy too!

Oh, Clayxels does look interesting, yes.

The Low Poly Ultimate Pack looks pretty handy. The Forest Environment and Relief Terrain Pack are highly rated as well.

I was very interested in the sound packs too, but one of them (Monster sounds) appears to have a lot of overlapping sounds and seems to have been produced by someone not familiar with game design. They say they're going to "fix" it, but we'll see. Human Vocal Sounds could be quite handy though. Finding good sounds that you have the rights to can be time-consuming. The Thor Thunderstorm might be a fun add to something as well.

And yeah, Easy Character Movement gets solid reviews too. After seeing what Cinemachine does for camera control, I'm all on board with something to make character movement easier.

Just wanted to chime in here and say that Zenva is having a Black Friday sale on all their curriculum.
$20 for all access for a year!

That seems like an amazing steal... $20 for a year!!!!!
Gather coins in your couch for that ;P

Is there a good beginner's guide to Blender? Maybe for Kindle? Maybe Youtube?

Definitely youtube.
I think the search is blender 101...

Thanks!

This course on Udemy has always looked good to me.

If you're not familiar with Udemy, the general rule is to never pay more than $12 for a course. They constantly run sales, so don't let a regular price of $100+ scare you.

They will definitely have a black friday sale. On or about that day. They also do free weekends 3 times a year.

Zenva also has a lot of gamedev related courses. They must have blender stuff.
And as I just mentioned above they are selling their annual subscription for $20.

Agreed. My best learning has been following along with some thirteen year old that turns on the setting where the keys they press are displayed clearly in the video.

At least for some of the skills. I suppose the best learning material might be scattered depending on which specific skill you're shooting for. Modeling, skinning, texture painting seem to lend themselves to video. Sculpting has a quick iterative feel to it that seemed to play well with just farting around.

Actually animating models to move around with a believability better than Reboot is impossible.

There is also a series where they do a subject in 10 minutes: rigging, modeling, texturing, etc.
If you are familiar with the concepts, that will help you understand how its done in blender.

If like me you have a hard time with learning anything from videos, this site has been a go-to forever: Blender 3D Noob to Pro

Added DragonRuby Toolkit to the OP. I’ve been enjoying working with it, and since I got it in the itch.io Bundle for Racial Equality it was free.

Are there other things folks want me to update there? I’ve been keeping up with the thread, but I don’t know what, if anything, folks want me to add to the OP

microStudio is a web-based engine for very, very simple games, still, I've dabbled in it and its fairly easy to pick up on if you're a beginner or have little to no programming background.

Just want to add a couple of art resources that didn't found on the main page

https://craftpix.net/ it has free resources and paid ones, even a subscription option.

https://kaylousberg.com/game-assets Similar to Kenney, this guy have some free resources, in particular his latest dungeon pack is REALLY good.

Also, Unity released a new set of courses in form of pathways, if you are completely new you can take the Unity Essentials and a new one for entry level, the Junior Programmer. They promised to get more rolling over the next year, they idea is that will help on certifications so keep that in mind.

Missed the update last month - added!

I've been fiddling around with GameMaker Studio 2 and getting a lot out of it. Set a goal to finish a game I've had in a mostly playable state for several years now. Last night had a big breakthrough and got almost all of the key features in place.

That sounds terrific Vector! Keep going. I know how hard it is to stay on it.

Stick with it Vector; of all the things they tell you about the industry, its not tech skill, its not artistry, its not ideas, but stamina to get something actually done and out the door that matters in the long run
