Spider-Man Catch-All

It just seems like a lot of work to go through for no real improvement. Both faces are fine so why do it? I guess if it makes the motion capture a lot easier in the future....still seems like a waste of time.

It's a bit confusing, because they replaced John Bubniak (the face model for the original) with Ben Jordan (the face model for the remaster) in order to better match Yuri Lowenthal (the voice actor for both games) who looks like neither John Bubniak nor Ben Jordan.

John Bubniak:

Ben Jordan:

Yuri Lowenthal:

I agree with you to a point. Their jawlines and the width of their faces are different but I can see a similarity around the eyes nose and mouth between Ben Jordan and Yuri Lowenthal. It may come down to measurements. It certainly made a lot more sense when I thought they were changing the face to resemble the voice actor rather than to resemble a model who kinda looks like the voice actor if you squint hard enough.

Either model looks like a great Peter.

Ben Jordan, if we're to be critical, does look much like a knockoff Tom Holland. That's unfortunate. Ben Jordan may be a fantastic motion capture artist. It's not his fault that this appears much like an effort by the studio to achieve a Holland-esque likeness. Much more than it does to mimic the appearance of the voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal (who can also do live action).

Peter Parker with that model, as it stands, looks younger than Miles Morales. It has also made this Peter Parker less unique, and less interesting. It is fine. It was great.

The nonsense reasoning doesn't deflect the loss of what was a fantastic portrayal with the original face model, John Bubniak. If the studio wanted to better match up to the voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal, perhaps cast Yuri Lowenthal. Now that makes sense.

It'll blow over. It's a non-event. Still, it was a pleasant distraction from our current political disaster amongst financial ruin and the loss of critical thinking. Damn. I need another distraction. Hurry along, Miles Morales. Please.

As far as I can tell, this is all speculation; has Insomniac said anything about the reason for the replacement? My speculation would be more along the lines of "they needed to redo it, and the previous guy wasn't available".

Higgledy linked to it on the last page, but this is Insomniac's creative director. No idea why he decided to do this via photo of a Word doc, but there it is.

Weird. They all three look like generic white dudes to me (a category to which I fall into, too), but even if they were wildly different I'm not sure why you'd need the body model to look like the voice actor. I get why you'd need a similarity if you were using multiple people for mocap (an actor for cut scenes & dialog, and a separate athlete for combat, for instance), but not for voiceover work. Hannah Hoekstra, for instance, who was the face (and I believe body) model for Aloy in Horizon: Zero Dawn, pretty much bears no resemblance to Ashly Burch, who's Aloy's voice.

(Addendum: Double-checked, and it appears that Hannah Hoekstra was Aloy's face model and mocap actor for the original game, where Ashly Burch was the voice actor, but they mocapped Ashly for the Frozen Wilds DLC.)

My understanding and I’ve only watched a couple of behind the scenes documentaries where they’ve talked about this stuff so I know nothing, is that it’s about capturing the subtleties of a performance. With motion capture you can record that someone smiled at point x in the scene and tilted their head at point y and the two people probably don’t have to be that similar facially to record at that level but if you want to record all the nuance of an individual performance, different subtle movements around the mouth, etc, you need to be able to take the recording of the voice actors performance while delivering the lines and super impose that on the character model. The closer they fit the better (and probably the less work because animators often have to tinker with the results to make them look right.)

Looking at the three faces again, Yuri and Ben have a similar, longer distance between their eye line and mouth. John’s is, to me, shorter.

It could be that, with Aloy and Ashley Birch, even though they look different Their facial structures were close enough for it not to be a problem.

Someone at work asked me about Spider-Man Recasted! I cannot unhear/unsee that. Ha!

Turns out, this Spider-Man game is quite good. I’m REALLY into it at the moment.

I really need to finish the DLC.

It's crazy how much I found myself engrossed by and engaged with this game. The DLC too. Insomniac struck a superb balance between combat, gadgets, traversal, main story arc, and the side missions. The voice work and the varied take on a mostly known tale were also great. I so too found a lot of comfort and positivity in select moments, which I sorely needed!

I approached the game how I wanted to, when I wanted, where I wanted. I've saw a few tumble at hurdles such as repetitive robberies, assaults, and kidnappings. I undertook them at my own discretion. The emergency services handled them otherwise. Don't chase towards them unless you wish to. They're reoccurring. It's part of the friendly neighbourhood aspect. Crime happens. Spidey can intervene. There is no fail state for deciding not to reacting like a canine upon seeing a postal delivery worker, mind you. (I had to relearn my open world encounter approach as such from Mass Effect: Andromeda, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and The Witcher 3. Spider-Man reaped a readjustment reward. Thankfully.)

After watching this I preordered. I was going to wait but this looks great.

Oh man! I love the frame rate on it!

Slightly disappointed that trailer didn't use "What's Up, Danger".

Frame rate of the game: Excellent.

Frame rate of the suit: Terrible. I can't stand watching that suit in action, it's so distracting; I had to stop the video 30 seconds after the demo started. I get that they're going for the comic-book style appearance, but it just looks like the game is stuttering.

That looks fantastic! That's probably the first thing that's made me really interested in new Miles Morales game. As much as I love that character, I wasn't wild about the game's take on him and wasn't sure I was all that interested in more of the same gameplay. But piggybacking on my love of Into the Spider-Verse? That's a damn good hook.

Fortunately it's optional. I really dig it but I can see how it can be highly distracting for others.

As for SpideyFaceGate, eh... I prefer the original but it's not a dealbreaker for me.

Excellent. I'm back on-board!

I’m belatedly getting attached to Peter’s original face. I wasn’t really invested before. I’ll adapt to the new one. Yuri Lowenthal has the perfect voice for Peter so whatever they need to do to keep him and improve the animation I’m onboard with.

Also, I enjoyed the pigeon chasing, for the simple but sweat story behind it and because I could catch the pigeons. I have yet to warm to the drone chases.

I've watched Into the Spiderverse so many times that it just looked natural to me. Haha. That said, I won't be playing in that mode, but I'm glad it's there. It's gimmicky in the very best way possible. I love it.

Miles morales kotaku review.

Or do we have a new thread?

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales - Easy Allies Review

Gita Jackson's review over at Vice was an interesting counterpoint for me (I imagine most of the reviews will be glowing, and this one is mostly so about how the game plays).

God damn, that's a fantastic review.

Gita is very very good.

My goodness that was a superb read. Its good to gain perspective in regards to Gita's experiences herself & just getting a bit more clued in on police practices, what gentrification actually means & how its still an ongoing issue today. There's a wealth of other poignant issues she brings up too.

Its a pity that the game seems to side step so many of these issues & not attach blame or go into specific details. I'm looking forward to playing the game still but I'll not be able to help going in & looking at the story in a different (perhaps more critical) light now.

Generic question that is probably already answered earlier (or if I wanted/had time to google).

I want to play MM on my PS4. I would also like to play The remake/MM on my PS5 when I hit the lotto and buy one. How do I do that without buying the game twice?

from the first google source I found

gamesradar

As we’ve mentioned, Spider-Man: Miles Morales launches on both PS4 and PS5 on November 12. The good news? Buying this standalone expansion on PS4 grants you a free PS5 upgrade. If after buying the expansion you then decide that you want to purchase Spider-Man: Remastered, you can for a $20 (UK price TBC). Incidentally, the same upgrade path is offered for those that buy the Miles Morales standard edition on PS5.
