Things you should know by now, but only just discovered

Washing rice sounds like too much work! I guess I'll just die of arsenic poisoning.

It's a trick; Arsenic is dangerous to a Quintin like European honeybees are to murder hornets.

The S in Fortinbras is not silent.

That's because it's short for Fortinbrassiere.

Not only that but it is not pronounced like the plural of bra.

It’s daylight saving time today. Which explains why the grocery store isn’t open yet.

As usual, we have a thread for that.

Ah but irrespective of the suckitude of the day, I literally should have known but only just discovered it moments before making that post, as I sat in the parking lot waiting for the clock to tick over.

That is great news and seems pretty easy. It brings up the question though that if half the rice sold is illegal why isn’t something be done about that? Why is it still for sale?

It only exceeds regulations in the EU. You don't want some bureaucrat in Brussels telling you what rice you can eat, do you?

I guess with Brexit they can poison all the children they want in the UK now.

We can enjoy it with some of that delicious chlorinated chicken we keep hearing about.

I hear chlorinated chicken prevents COVID-19, too.

"Following previous research from the University of Sheffield that found half of the rice consumed in the UK exceeded European Commission regulations for levels of arsenic in rice meant for the consumption for infants or young children."

Only illegal for kids to eat it!

Yes, but only in chickens.

How do you wash rice?

Most of our rice is cooked in our Zojirushi rice-cooker, which has a nice high-sided bowl. As Robear said, you just put the rice in, put some water into the bowl, swish it around, and then pour out the now-opaque liquid. Generally about three rounds of rinsing will clear the water and then you just cook it normally.

I always think to myself, "press until the blood runs clear", as I rinse over and over to get the water to a reasonable clarity.

I really oughta rewatch Farscape.

PILOT!

I was looking for shows in Japanese to watch on Netflix, and then realized that if I connect my VPN to Japan, I might be able to get more that way. It worked! Now I need to see if I can stream the shows to my Chromecast...

I need that trick in reverse. It drives me nuts that netflix doesn't have some kind of option for "show me programs in language X even if you don't have them localized for the region I'm in".

That said, JP suggestions:

  • Brave Yoshihiko (comedy series parodying JRPGs)
  • The Magic Hour (hilarious movie)
  • Camera wo Tomeru na (Noises Off but with zombies)

Based on my wife's experience, setting your interface language to Japanese seems to suddenly pop a huge number of Japanese shows into your recommendations.

Does it offer any shows that don't have English? My experience is that regardless of UI language, it only lets me watch a show if it has JP audio or subtitles available. E.g. I can't see the MST3K reboot, even though it's a netflix show so they presumably own the rights.

MST3K has a bunch of region locking issues because the movies they riff each have their own licensing requirements.

edit
Dammit! Wrong thread. But I’ll leave this here anyway.

I just learned that the 3DS has a Virtual Console section in the eShop! We're going on a family RV trip, and I was looking for something to spend my $9.04 wallet balance on, and I stumbled upon a whole section at the bottom for NES/SNES titles! I had no idea this was there!

I've learned that The Mission Impossible movies are not original. They're actually a continuation of an extremely popular 60's -- and later 80's -- TV series. It blew my mind. And now I can be angry about the treatment of the Jim Phelps character like everyone else back in 1996.

I absolutely love the 60's series, and yes, I was pissed by that in 1996. If you have a way of watching an episode titled "The Submarine", it's amazing, although overall the series hasn't aged all that well.

The best part of Mission Impossible was including a surgically altered Vulcan.

That was a very obvious twist to the first movie that wouldn't have been obvious to a fan of the series thus why they probably decided to do it. It actually took me a few years to realize that Jon Voight was playing the same character as Peter Graves from the series. I vaguely remember watching the old TV series with my grandfather when I was a kid. Mostly just remember the burning fuse opening and the "This message will self-destruct..." bit.
