Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Serial Killer with Piers Morgan was essentially a waste of time. Morgan failed to elicit trust, to spur conversation, to provoke a facade crack, to portray empathy, to provide fresh emphasis towards guilt or innocence. I'm left wondering what was the point. It was work therefore it paid? It was a stage therefore he could project his small-minded arrogance? Idiot.

Sounds like RDJ's character in Natural Born Killers...

3 episodes in and Star Trek: Discovery finally feels like a show happy in its own skin and comfortable with actually being Star Trek. It's been the best by far of the Discovery Seasons - at least, so far.

We just finished The Queens Gambit. Excelently done and further proof that apparently Walter Tevis books provide bullet proof material for adaptations. Anna Taylor-Joy is marvelous.

Spoiler:

I even enjoyed the ending going a bit Rocky IV, I wasnt entirely sold by the population of some real chess history but inserting a Bobby Fischer cypher instead of going with it. I guess Bobby himself would have been too distracting

not for those of us on the basic tier! Whoohoo!

Edit: they've also cut the bit rate for 4k content by half, and despite claiming there is no loss in quality, people are noticing the difference.

Y'know, the press release mentioned this was to improve their ability to create additional content.

Hey, Netflix... how about you make (or more likely buy, that's what they've been doing) some more original content and then charge us for it.

Started the Queens Gambit. As en avid chess player, it is refreshing to see that positions on the board often resemble the reality. There are still some things to frown upon, but this is to be forgiven. The last movie I remember which depicted a good chess game was 'Fresh' (Boaz Yakin - Highly recommended)

Thought His House was great. Best film of the year for me.

Do you follow any chess-related youtube channels? Are there any good ones for beginners?

Some scenes in some content even when the old bitrate was maxed out had massive amounts of macroblocking and other digital noise. Was wildly distracting. The suggestion that further halving the already too low bitrate won't effect how things look is ridiculous.

I canceled my sub yesterday. There's too many other services offering more things I actually want to watch right now for less money.

I don't really follow any channels. Search for some of them on youtube when I want to know something about a specific game or opening.

I would start with a free sign-up in Chess.com Over there is basicly everything you could ever wish for.

For me, I just love love love the play of Manuel Bosboom. He throws out all the theory and plays some kind of TOTAL chess: no matter how many pieces he looses, passive pieces of the opponent don't count.

He doesn't always win, but all his games are a joy to watch. The commentary adds some extra flavour!

The extra price for 4k is just gross anyway. Amazon has had 4k content just as long and not charged extra. Disney+ launched with 4k movies and series and no extra charge. Hulu is adding some in now too. I haven't tried HBO Max but I assume they have some 4k stuff too and only seen the one price for them. Peacock doesn't charge extra either.

HBO Max does not have 4K, which is annoying for a premium-priced streaming service.

Does HBO still insist on cropping most films to fit the 16:9 aspect ratio? That's the thing I've hated most about them. But the quality of their TV programs (ATT don't f*ck it up) kinda makes up for it.

Really? I noticed a very large increase in visual clarity after they got Max up and going. It is probably the streaming service that I think looks best. If they aren't utilizing 4K, then I wonder why it looks so much better.

Barbarians was a fun watch but a hard r show.

Been watching Ugly Delicious. I love cooking shows and this is probably the best show on the subject of food and culture made. I have learned so much about where food comes from, why it's cooked the way it is, regional dialects and the migration of food across the world. It's also super entertaining and a very chill show where Dave Chang and friends travel the world, trying dishes, and asking deeper questions about food than "what spices do you use". I can't recommend it enough.

I just finished this one up too and enjoyed it quite a bit. I wasn't expecting it to end so fast and was bummed when I went to look for the next episode and there wasn't one.

How different is it from Bourdain’s shows? It seemed pretty similar to me from the previews and there are only so many travel food shows to the same places that I can watch.

It's quite different in structure. Where Bourdain focused on one particular place each episode, Ugly Delicious goes all over the place in search of the core of one particular food. I also think Ugly Delicious digs deeper into the culture and especially the history of foods than what I've seen Bourdain do (admittedly, I have only seen a handful of episodes of his shows).

Yes, this. I was pleasantly surprised that he dug into -- for example -- the racism associated with stuff like fried chicken and msg. Bourdain's shows were more travel shows than they were food shows. The food was just a framing device. I feel like Ugly Delicious flips that around.

Edit: As an aside, Fredrik_S: watch more Bourdain shows. Both No Reservations and Parts Unknown are great. Presumably A Chef's Tour or whatever it was called is also good, but I never saw any of it.

Cool, good to know. Thanks guys. I agree Bourdain's was basically a travel show where they filmed the meals.

Thanks for the recommendation as it was a surprisingly great movie I knew nothing about going in. Not gonna lie, that first jump scare got me real good and that hasn’t happened in quite a while. But for those who haven’t seen it, the story is really what drives the movie and aside from the occasional jump scare the horror elements are a fresh take.

Dark 2x01

This seasons starts off great. There is time skip but what does that mean in a show about time travel. They could go to any point in time. Now that I think about it they probably will go back to show us what happen during the time skip. With the skip we also get new time locations. They all look interesting because of setting or who they focus on.

"And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you." I wrote that when I went back in time but some jerk stole it from me or I'm to lazy to look up who wrote it. You decide which is true. The episode starts off with that quote. A lot of shows start off with my quote.

Spoiler:

The episode starts off in June 21, 1921. Two males are tolling away digging something. The younger teen guy we later find out is Noah. No idea who the other guy is because Noah killed him with a pickax. Before the killing though they talk about Adam. Adam seems to be big man in charge. I'm sure his name being Adam means nothing. They also talk about completing a loop that will end in six days. Noah states that in sex days everything will become paradise. The older guy is like I wonder if hell and paradise are the same thing. Noah kills the guy because of his lack of faith in Adam. That is how I took it at least. Thing to note is the unknown man had the same tattoo on his stomach that Older Noah had on his back.

We jump to Jonas and Martha having incest sex. I think to myself this must be a dream and it is. Stop dreaming about banging your aunt Jonas. Jonas wakes up in what looks like the fallout universe. Obviously he has been in the future for a long time now. Last season we left him getting capture just as he arrived to the future. Now he is all alone in a different outfit playing fallout vr.

Jonas leaves his house which is in ruins along with the entire city. He makes his way to a bunker where he plays a tape made by Claudia. She states she is one of the few survivors of the apocalypse but might have a way to go back in time and change things.

We jump to June 20, 2020 and it is labeled 6 days before the apocalypse. So my take is completing the loop in 1921 is what causes the apocalypse in 2020. And the future is the hell not paradise that was created.

Anyway in 2020 a radio plays off a list of everyone currently missing. It is a big list that includes Jonas( stuck in the future), Mads (died in forced time experiment), Mikkel (stuck in past and suicide in 2020), Ulrich (stuck in past), Helge (He went back in time to try and kill the younger him) and some others I forgot. I'm not taking notes people. And note again no women but I think that might change.

I think we are about 6 months or more from the end of season 1 present. Regina has lost most of her hair because of the cancer. They never say it but I guess her cancer came from the toxic waste the plant is dumping. If that isn't the case I'm not sure why they are spending time on this story line.

We then jump to town hall meeting introducing the new head of the task force created to find the missing people and child murderer. One guy is upset that they only sent one person. The crowd seems to agree with him.

When jump to Katharina going into the cave. She is following Ulrich trail. I'm thinking she is going to get stuck in the past with him. I hope her kids like not having parents. Well the world is going to end in six days anyway.

At or near the nuclear plant we see men in yellow hazmat suits covering barrels of toxic waste in some type of black tar like stuff. This looks official but it might be another attempt to hide the toxic waste. This reminds me of AIM scientist doing stuff in the background while Modok talks about something.

We go to Hannah and she is doing really bad. Her husband is dead, the guy she cheating with is missing, and her son is also missing. So she has been alone for 6 months not knowing what happen to her. She is a garbage person but I can't help but to feel sorry for her. She takes the gun she took from Regina's husband and points it under her chin. Her suicide attempt is interrupted by someone coming in like they own the place. Oh my it is Jonas as the older man stranger. After a bit he convinces Hannah it really is him and they hug. She is still a garbage person but I'm glad she has someone now. Garbage people need love also.

We go to 1920 I think. Here older Noah is talking to teen Noah. Stupid kid Noah is like how do I tell right from wrong? Why did Adam pick me? Where do baby come from? Older Noah is like I can't believe I was this stupid and then patiently explains everything, EVERYTHING.

Back to the future. Jonas is walking through fallout when he comes across a bunch of bodies hanging. I'm not sure why they are hanging. I would guess they broke some rule or were hung as warning to others. Anyway while looking at the scene not picking up on any warning Jonas hears gunfire. He quickly goes towards the gunfire because that makes sense.

Jonas finds a big group of people. A few of the people are being held at gunpoint. They are yelling about wanting to see god. They claim god is hidden beyond the wall. Some lady and her translator state it is forbidden to go in the forbidden zone that is why it is called the forbidden zone and not all are welcome zone. The price for breaking this rule is death. They hang em so guess the other people were hung for the same reason.

After the hanging the group breaks up but Jonas stays behind to talk crap to the ladies. The ladies ask where has he been but he doesn't answer. They state there is nothing in the forbidden zone. Then why you kill those guys lady. They also state that their only hope is the passage which I take to mean they are going back in time like Claudia was talking on the tapes. However, she also says the passage will lead to paradise. I guess their passage will be the start of another time loop. Oh wait a minute. That guy in beginning said paradise and hell might be the same thing. hmmm brain hurt.

Jonas tells the ladies he just wants to go home and not deal with this BS. He then ask what is behind the wall but they don't answer. Since this is fallout it is probably a super mutant.

Back in 2020 Martha finds the room Katharina and Ulrich were using to track the murders and missing kids. Martha is shocked by the state of the room. She doesn't say anything but I think she thinks the lady might have gone mad. She starts looking through everything so I think she will be going to the time cave soon.

We go to Noah and Adam talking. Adam states the apocalypse has to happen so i guess no paradise? Maybe paradise after the apocalypse. Or Adam is just evil. I always say you have to crack a few worlds if you want to make some eggs.

Going to watch this episode again because i know I dozed and missed stuff, just tired.

Just rewatched it and I did miss a bunch of stuff. One thing was important.

Spoiler:

In the future Jonas hopes the wall to see the hidden god. He goes to the same place they covered the toxic waste in the present. The place is very radioactive but he finds a suit to wear. Going deeper into the building he finds a big black ball floating in the air

Three episodes into Queen's Gambit and it is fantastic. The actress playing Beth is very good and striking. She kind of reminds me of a young Scarlett Johansson. After the first episode I was wondering if the the entire season would end up being fever dream.

Was watching a youtube video from chess player explaining the chess in the game. They are using real chess in the show which makes it even more fun to watch.

Me too! I'm also 3 episodes in. I went in completely blind and am greatly enjoying not knowing how the plot and characters will turn out. All I will say is my predictions have been wrong on a number of fronts so far

Just stumbled across Deadly Class... 1 eposide in and love it already!
