Slay the Spire - Catch all

I love this game, and the developers, but I have given up on the ascension climb. I'll relegate myself to watching jorbs and Baalorlord explain how the heck they strategize.

I'm sure there are written guides out there. I wasn't trying to change how you get your strategy; I was just citing a source. :)

No worries. That’s just how they do it these days. For instance with Hearthstone, ideally a site would just give the deck list and some of the more powerful combos. While there are many sites with deck lists, most lack any explanation of how to pilot the deck. You must go watch VODs for that. I’m old, and have never fully embraced the idea of watching someone else play a game that I love.

I find I'm a lot more likely to watch somebody play a Magic draft than I am any other game. Because I can watch a draft for free but if I want to draft myself I have to pay for it. Once that got me in the habit of watching people play it was easier to branch out to the occasional other games.

This is definitely the first game that has gotten me watching someone else playing it since chess. It actually made me click with watching someone who is light years in front of me and just enjoying watching the skull. Almost makes me understand why these whippersnappers watch fortnite streamers. Almost but not quite.

The thing that got me watching other people's content with Slay the Spire was that I'd watch and think about what I would do with the choices given to that person. Then when my choice and their choice differed I'd think about why they preferred their choice and watch how they use it to get stronger. It got me to consider a lot of cards and relics that I overlooked early on in my time with the game.

I think i have to admit that i find Watcher slightly less interesting than the other three characters. Too often it just burns down to doing when do I have lethal in wrath arithmetic for me. She is also easier to get through the base act 1 as shes so front loaded with damage so I find the Act 1 portion a bit less engaging too. I'll keep doing the odd run with her but not as much as the other characters.

Yeah, the Watcher is "interesting" in that it's often easy to breeze through Act 1 only to fall apart later.

The math is especially true if you've got Blasphemy. You'd better be sure you've got enough to kill before playing that card, but sometimes you're relying on playing attacks that draw you more cards and hoping you get more attacks. And sometimes you get caught off guard- like play Blasphemy, which sets off Ink Bottle and draws you a card, but you didn't have anything in your draw pile, so your discard pile gets shuffled back and you don't get the two Flurry of Blows back your hand that you were counting on in your damage calculation. Yikes.

That said, I won a pretty fun run with the Watcher last night with a very small deck that had Blasphemy, Ragnarok, Signature Move and Judgement+. Plus Runic Pyramid where you don't discard your hand at the end of a turn. When the time was right, I would play Blasphemy and Ragnarok and still have enough energy to play all other attacks in my hand and then Signature Move- and if that didn't kill, it at least got the enemy down below 40 HP so I could finish it off with Judgement.

I ended up with a really interesting silent deck last night. The core was Tough Bandages and Tingsha combined with 2 calculated gambles and two copies of blur. In fights without statuses being put in your deck it was functionally infinite carrying huge quantities of block and discarding so many cards it murdered everything including the double boss at the end of Ascension 20. I knew the damage would be too slow for the heart and I couldn't cobble together another solution for that fight so died there but it was a lot of fun to pilot. It even managed it despite having a grand finale curse in there from a card transform

So, far

What the heck is going on?! What is this

Good game.

Still no Android version?

Glad your enjoying it! I won’t spoil anything but let us know how you are getting on.

I hope it becomes like Doom in the long run and I can play it on my fridge.

I mean, sure, but I'd like to have it on my tablet for smoke breaks both at home and for work already, dang it.

Indeed, I am not sure what Megacrit are working on at the moment, surely an android conversion would be worth the money?

Maybe they should work on a way to port your progress between platforms. After the Android version of course.

That would be great. I actually haven't bought the iOS version precisely for that reason. I don't fancy playing early ascension again these days and would like to just jump onto A20 on it.

Well that and all i have is an Iphone 6s and dont fancy the small screen and slow running!

Waiting for a deep sale - like 99cents. I am sure it will happen someday.

I've had luck running it with the Steam Link app on my phone! Granted this was on my home wi-fi so I could play from the couch instead of my desktop, but it could be a stopgap solution for you. I don't recall having any accidental mis-plays but I did go carefully to avoid that.

So I’ve got Slay the Spire on my wishlist for both iOS and Nintendo Switch, and may have even bought it for PC when it was some kind of sale. But I so rarely able to get away from family to actually use my PC so now prefer games on iOS then Switch then PC.....but in the case of Stardew Valley for instance that means there’s a great new content update now for PC that I’ll have to wait for until next year sometime. How does Slay the Spire do on this? Would I regret an iOS or Switch purchase? (Note that around the house I use both iPhone or iPad as convenience and screen size allow.)

STS is a few months behind on Switch. Maybe 3?

Can't quite remember but the 4th character definitely was on PC for a while first. But it's all caught up now and portable is so useful.

I play exclusively on console. The PS4 is a few months behind on updates usually, the watcher and 2.0 changes came out months ago though and it’s just minor balance tweaks that are happening now . I think all non p.c versions are the same so I would just go for the most convenient option which sounds like switch. Have fun with one of the greatest games ever made ( other opinions are available)

The Switch version is superb. Its sucked 500+ hours of gaming time from me that I don't regret for one second. Its one of the best games of the generation.

PS just got to level 18 Ascension with Ironclad.

I own it on both PC and Switch but exclusively play it on Switch

Last night I learned that if you are intangible the blasphemy hit only takes 1 HP as opposed to killing you. I learnt this during a run with incense burner. It is shall we say rather good.

Yep. But it's important to note that incense burner must be set to trigger intangible at the start of your next turn, and not the turn that you've actually played Blasphemy.

How are you all getting along since the 2.0 patch? I think the buffs have made the game quite a bit easier, my A20 Heart Kill percentage has jumped to 15% from 10%. I'm not sure about watcher because I have pretty much given up playing her. A big chunk of that has come from watching Jorbs and realising how good boss relic swap was as a whale bonus, it's one i had pretty much dismissed out of hand, which was entirely wrong of me

The Silent is almost fun to play now with the Shiv boost, almost... because you know Time Keeper will always show up.

Anyway, I'm just 3 achievements away from 100% it (well 4 but the last one you get for getting all the achivements) I have never 100% a game before but the ones I have left are beat the game in 20 mins, 5 card deck and beat a boss in one turn. Not sure if it will be fun enough to chase thoughs, well maybe the speed run will be. Also means I get to play as the Iron Clad again, whicch is great because he is the best.

Nice on the achievements Onewild. The five card deck and the boss on turn one were my last ones too. A double drop kick infinite on champ will give you both hopefully. Getting rid of all the cards quickly enough is the real problem you need to get lucky on events.

Yeah I was going for accension 20 on all the characters, but after doing it for the Iron Clad, Defect and Watcher, I was stuck with the Silent, so decided to change tact. Last character based achievement I got was channeling 9 plasma in one turn. Which I did with an Echo/Metor Strike deck that went on to win me the run.
