Nintendo Switch - Games You Can Play Right Now

Galaxy has 240 stars.

Footage representative of visual quality under optimal conditions. Persistent high-speed internet connection required.

Cool. The Switch does seem to get great stuff it just takes awhile.

Nice to see they're trying to do streaming games. Been wondering about that for a while now. Hitman 3 on Switch? Nice!

Part Time UFO looks like a cute game that will be available later today.

A demo for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will also be available later today.

Of interest to myself and no one else, ports of No More Heroes 1&2 will also also be available later today.

So all of those will be games you can play right now soon. Very very soon.

There have been a few streaming games in Japan for awhile now. Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Resident Evil 7 were both available on Switch in Japan as streaming games.

Yeah, I meant here. Downloading games and the like over, say, satellite isn't new to Japan.

I'm still bummed we don't get more MMOs on Switch that way. DQX is one I believe does that. I'd love to play some of them while laying in bed.

Part Time UFO was a mobile game, and a fun little thing physics puzzle game, I might add.

I'd like to give NMH another go, honestly. I played the original on Wii and hated the combat and movement. It all felt so wrong.

I enjoyed the first enough, bought the second, but never finished it. So this seems like a perfect time to revisit (and the lack of Wiimote may actually be a boon these days).

Elder Scrolls Online via Game Pass streaming has been nice. I'd get it on Stadia if characters weren't locked to a platform. But yeah, a streaming version of an MMO on Switch? I'd take that. You have to be connected to play anyway.

Immortals: Fenyx Rising is coming - I forgot that.

I will also say that you can tell the graphics are not as good as the other systems. Glad is is coming but rather noticable.

So Control was free and I downloaded it but what does "Cloud Version" mean exactly? I assume it means I need to be online all the time to play, but it is the full game? How are the monetizing that exactly then.

Yes. The fine print says you get 5 mins to try it out then you need to buy it.

nvm

LOL I played it on the Xbox - I don't think it loaded in 5 minutes!

It might be better with JoyCons/Pro Controller, I'd have to test myself and see. I recently began a new playthrough of the original No More Heroes but had to pack the WiiU up. It does have really awkward movement and some other issues, so I'll be curious if the ports have touched up controls. I'll also be curious if these ports retain the Japanese censorship that changed all the blood over to black, which I believe is what happened with the PS3 ports of the games.

The second overall wasn't as good. There were some mechanical improvements, but they decided to turn the mini-games into retro homages that are far more time consuming than the part-time mini-games were in the original. They also doubled down on the kuh-razy, so it feels like it was made by someone that only understood the first game as being about kuh-razy colorful assassins and Travis is an Otaku with a lightsaber.

Still enjoyable in its own right, but the first game had more going for it. That said, after trying out The Silver Case, I've kind of learned that Suda 51's writing either struggles when translated into English or that he's just an odd writer. Of his games I've played now (which, admittedly, are limited to The Silver Case, No More Heroes 1+2, and Travis Strikes Again), his characters seem to kind of talk past each other. Dialogue doesn't feel like anyone's listening, and the foul language ...it doesn't sound like pre-teens attempting to sound like adults cussing, which is what most awkward swearing is like in games or movies. It's more like someone from the Midwest is trying to write dialogue with the foul language of a Kevin Smith film and thus hasn't been surrounded by the vulgarity of the Northeast.

I have no clue if that will make sense to anyone but it's the feeling I get. In the end, Suda 51 can write individual lines that can sound good, but then when put into a larger conversation just cause it all to feel... weird. I might be tempted to claim he's imitating Hideo Kojima's verbose style, but... he's really not.

Ultimately, the first No More Heroes is this interesting fusion of self-indulgence juxtaposed with commentary on just how twisted and messed up violent wish fulfillment fantasies are, with each villain's monologue feeding into why the game is titled "No More Heroes", but then the second game is like "YEAH LET'S ADD BIG ROBOTS NOW!" Regardless, the end result is Suda 51's awkward conversations kind of muck up the intended message (with Travis Strikes Again having both awkward conversations and too much indulgence confusing its intended message even further).

It has me really curious where No More Heroes III will go. At the very least, Suda 51 is a true B-list designer/creator whose works are loaded with interesting ideas, but have this unpolished DIY element that make them far more interesting experiments than finished products. Fitting to his desire for Grasshopper to be a "punk" game developer.

Just saw the NMH announcement. Been a busy day. Thanks for all the thoughts everyone. Was curious.

A Cloud Version game means the game is not loaded onto your device, but streamed gameplay from the internet. So it will load instantly.

I'm assuming the free version is just a time limited demo and you can try it for 5 minutes, i guess is what it means.

Me: Never played a Dynasty Warriors game, but I guess I'll give this Age of Calamity demo a--

Age of Calamity: You now have 100 KOs.

Me: Wait, wha--

Age of Calamity: You now have 500 KOs.

Feels funny the first time you run into an invisible wall in a game that looks like Breath of the Wild. And after an intro that reminds me of Into the Breach, I'm not sure if we're looking at an alternate timeline or what.

Damn, looks like Control isn't available in Australia. Doesn't surprise me with our horrific internet speeds...But I was keen to see how it played.

Hyrule Warriors demo was interesting. Framerate was shocking, almost makes me think they were developing with a Switch Pro in mind. It did it's job of getting me intrigued though. Especially considering I have no interest in Musou games.

I picked these up the other day. They weren't high on my wishlist, but I'm doing a lot of travelling so I figured they'd be nice cheap time wasters. I may trade them back in later.

I couldn't find a reasonably priced Hyrule Warriors on Switch but I figured Fire Emblem was close enough to see whether I'd actually enjoy the series. Plus, I care a hell of a lot more about FE characters than Zelda characters

FE Warriors was one of the most interesting warrior games, incorporating the FE weapon triangle. I like it a lot.

Ironically, the characters might be the weakest part of Fire Emblem Warriors. Most of the cast is from Fire Emblem Fates, and Fates did not have a particularly strong cast to draw from.

I gave Fire Emblem Warriors a fair shot I think, but it didn't end up changing my disinterest in Musou games.

I'm not a fan of FE Warriors, despite liking both FE and Warriors games. The characters were all way too samey and the strategy was wafer thin. When DW8 added the weapon types (as a precursor to using the weapon triangle in FE Warriors) it added a good element to the otherwise boring Warriors formula. I had hoped to find FE Warriors interesting because of that, but mostly I was bored by it. Gotta be the characters.

Hyrule Warriors and the Pirate Warriors games are more my jam. Warriors Orochi games are neat as a "Greatest Hits" compilation of characters. Give me a wide range of characters and attacks and I'll enjoy your musou game. The strategic aspect of some of their games is never deep enough for me without the characters to back it up.

That's kind of like the problem with FE characters in Smash Bros too. They keep putting more sword users in and it's like hey, how about an axe or lance or bow?

I liked the weapon triangle in Fire Emblem Warriors and felt like that added just enough meat to chew on to make up for my almost total disinterest in most of the characters.

On the other side of that, Hyrule Warriors had a strong enough cast (and a good variety of weapons for Link) that it helped with some of the inherent repetitiveness of the musou template. Which makes me really concerned that so far the cast for Age of Calamity seems small.

Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition is on sale for $50 on Amazon.

Story seems to be what is likely to carry Calamity.

Anybody play Severed?

Devs of guacamelee. Looks like touch screen only, a 3DS then iOS now Switch game. Has good reviews and I really enjoyed both Guac games. But I can't find any mention of it on the site on the old 3ds thread or anything?

On sale for $5 now. Just looking for some opinions.
