A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

Nothing is going to happen until after January 20th.

What year?

Well, that depends, doesn't it.

In all honesty, those programs would be crushingly expensive. But you know what would cost even more? Not doing them. The working-class economy is fragile, and doesn't have the resources to last through a long crisis. If we hold ordinary folks together during a calamity like this, they can promptly start paying taxes again, and buying stuff again, as soon as we get a vaccine into broad circulation.

If we don't, we're permanently damaging our economy and incoming tax revenue, possibly to an extraordinary degree. It could take a generation to recover, if we ever do.

I was absolutely opposed to the bank bailouts and all the ongoing programs to save the rich from their own stupidity and greed. I am absolutely in favor of keeping people fed and housed during a pandemic.

With bankers, they privatized profit and socialized risk; this is more of the same, shoving the risk and loss onto the poorest segments of society. People have been paying taxes for many years, and they have the right to expect support in exchange.

We deployed trillions of dollars to prop up an extremely corrupt banking system, to ensure that nothing changed and that it stayed corrupt, but we're not willing to spend a dime on actual citizens?

This is the kind of emergency that national debt is for, not for routine operations.

I refuse to click a thumbs up on this. But I saw it and for a moment considered it.

but I think the reality is that trying to force people to wear masks simply isn't working

Except very few places in the US are "forcing" people to wear masks. Even the places that are have spotty enforcement. So the US has not really tried to enforce it.

Define enforcement? Would a store only letting people in be considered enforcement?

If they aren't backed by law and code enforcement which will intervene when there is willful non-compliance, then I'd say no. Stores around here tried, but after one violent act in another state some decided it was not up to their employees to enforce it. Around Gainesville proper people comply with the county order and there is some enforcement in the form of fines. In Newberry (same county) they do not, and none of the fines the county has enacted are being levied there.

Nice to see that Trump told the crowd at his rally in Wisconsin yesterday that doctors are writing COVID down as the cause of death because they get paid more if they do and that's why the number of reported cases is so high.

"Five people on my team are positive for Covid and I've been in close contact with them? Sure, I'll keep campaigning!"

O’Malley said Pence decided to maintain his travel schedule “in consultation with the White House Medical Unit” and “in accordance with the CDC guidelines for essential personnel.” Those guidelines require that essential workers exposed to someone with the coronavirus closely monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and wear a mask whenever around other people.

White House chief of staff: 'We are not going to control the pandemic'

Well, that's true. It was pretty obvious months ago that you weren't even trying.

Pressed by Tapper on why the US isn't going to get the pandemic under control, Meadows said: "Because it is a contagious virus just like the flu." He added that the Trump administration is "making efforts to contain it."

That second part there, however, is pretty clearly not true.

Fixed it!

Yeah jackass (Robert O'Brien) on Face The Nation saying that Trump is taking precautions while campaigning. He's not even wearing a f*cking mask. What a joke.

Still blaming China. It's been here since Feb.

CNN's giant headline this morning is now: "White House chief of staff: US won't control Covid-19"

If it was any other administration I would expect some furious back-peddling.

We won't control COVID-19 until we get another president should be the complete thought...

Can we at least get a photoshoot with a Defeat Accomplished banner?

It is pretty clear to me that they are embracing Atlas and herd immunity, although they think they are being covert and sneaky about it. Once (if) Pencelhead recovers, there will no stopping them.

Funny how Murkowski indicated she was now a yes just before reports about Pence's staff testing positive started surfacing.

In late July, the state of Victoria recorded 758 new cases of Corona virus in a single day. This prompted some pretty heavy lockdowns in Melbourne and across the rest of the state.

Today we recorded 0 new cases detected from ~15k tests.

It can be done but geeze we had to put up with a lot of carping from the sidelines.
And so many people angry about the fact that it worked.

I saw the news about a bunch of idiot non-mask wearing protestors. Do they just want to prolong the lockdown? And is Morrison now going to apologise for all his stupid nagging about the economy? No, of course not.

And so many people angry about the fact that it worked.

Wait, what? They want people to die?

More like indifference to death and needing to "open up business", why can't we open up sooner, everyone dies eventually, jsut protect old people because the young are such low risk, etc. - the same tune being sung all over the world.

Because locations with no restrictions are experiencing such booming economies right now..

While i would file this under wait and see, 2020 is so not over yet. Just saw in the news here, that a group of scientists was worried that birds were spreading corona virus to other animals... In Demmark there have been a ton of cases of minks getting infected, and infecting people afterward. Government recently started killing, literally, the mink fur industry, to stop the spread. They have now found birds that had corona virus on them, they were not infected, but they had it on their feet etc. and might have brought it between these mink farms.
Still sounds like a theory with little evidence, since nobody has seemingly figured out how the virus can spread between very isolated groups of minks. Nothing will surprise me anymore though.
The killer birds are coming! Run.

Minks died of COVID in Utah, US, as well though likely from person contact

El Paso has seen a coronavirus case surge, 300% rise from 270 in about 20 days, my sister and brother-in-law and his mother among them. They're asking residents to just stay home for 2 weeks and say they're authorizing law enforcement to fine anti-maskers... but the language sounds weasely like the officers can use their discretion (ie: Ignore it and make the requirement meaningless)

They're also keeping businesses open at 50% capacity, which seems completely counter-productive.

My sister and brother-in-law were extremely careful. They even declined to go to Florida for my dad's memorial last week. BIL's 80+ year old mother, however, dont give any sh*ts and she caught it, brought it into the house, recovered quickly, and left.

Edit to note that this is happening with other idiotic parts of my distant family. Several of them got it early, it wasn't too bad for them, now they're going around to Trump rallies reinforcing the message that the virus isn't serious.

I know it's always been clear where the priorities of republican's lie but talk about willful ignorance... I bet she won't be wearing a mask either.

Washington (CNN)Sen. Kelly Loeffler has tested negative for Covid-19 after two of her staffers tested positive, and the Georgia Republican plans to attend the vote on Monday to confirm President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Judge Amy Coney Barrett.

Loeffler's office released a statement on Saturday saying, "On Friday, Senator Loeffler was tested for COVID-19 after learning that two of her DC Senate staffers had tested positive. Senator Loeffler tested negative."

Testing negative on Friday was 3 days ago. What about today?

Insert pic of "I really don't care. Do you?"

Because it is obvious that they don't.

Even though I completely understand why we’re doing it, this lockdown has been so hard mentally. Been so anxious waiting for Dan’s pressers when he’s supposed to ease restrictions.

Mate - we got there.
We actually have a great chance to emerge from this and get back to kind of normal now with low risk.
We've done a great job.

We got there indeed! So excited to see some friends and family for the first time in months.
