Video Game Deals Catch-All

I don't like adventure games, I love puzzle games, don't like Phoenix Wright and I think Obra Dinn is one of the best games in a long time. Investigating is super neat as the action has been frozen while you're able to move freely in 3D. The art is great. Only downside is the game is slightly too long for its own good.

So how's Obra Dinn for someone who doesn't typically enjoy adventure/puzzle games? Closest game to it that I enjoyed would be the Phoenix Wright series.

It hasn't been on my radar because it looks distinctly like the games I'd typically bounce off of, but I'm thinking of grabbing it on Switch for some couch gaming time with my partner.

I feel like it's hard to say... I'd ask if you enjoy murder-mysteries rather than puzzles. I think of puzzle games are more of a hard-logic or mathematical thinking type of game, and some adventure games can be heavy on the dialogue side of things. RoOD doesn't really have dialogue that you take part of, but you do listen to other people's conversations. You have to do a lot of listening, looking for details, and a bit of exploring (within a small space) in order to solve the mysteries applying some logic. So it's more of a detective game than a puzzle game. Maybe that helps?

Thanks for the enabling

I noticed I had some leftover funds in my Switch wallet so it cost next to nothing anyway. Keen to explore this later.

Late 1802, the merchant ship Obra Dinn set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods and 80 souls on board. Six months later it hadn't met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea.

October 14th, 1807,the Obra Dinn has drifted into port at Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew. As insurance investigator for the East India Company's London Office, dispatch immediately to Falmouth, find means to board the ship, and prepare an assessment of damages.

Return of the Obra Dinn weaves an epic tale of hope, horror, greed, fear, love, leadership, and courage against the unimaginable. Learning about what each person means to each other is a delight. You will learn what life was like aboard a 19th century merchant vessel. I imagine the mixing pot of peoples and cultures is a microcosmic representation of the world at the time.

The game gives you a bare minimum of training and then promptly thrusts you into the role of a time-traveling CSI. At first you only have access to a few chapters or "scenes". As you solve more and more fates, you unlock more chapters, revealing more of the narrative.

I've never before felt so much like Sherlock. Let me rephrase that; I've never before felt so much like a successful Sherlock. Some of the fates won't be difficult to pin down but many will require acute observation and deduction from you. The difficulty of the puzzles I felt were spot on. There were a couple of fates for which I really got stuck on and couldn't figure out w/o help.

It's my GOTY for 2019 (which is when I played it, though it released in 2018). I am eagerly awaiting the day when I've forgotten enough of the game that I can return to it with eyes fresh enough to experience it all again.

I endorse the Duke of York after being fully enabled by aforementioned Duke.

I think this ends in a couple of days, but if you have an Amazon Prime Visa or an Amazon Prime Store Card, you can get 25% back on purchases of Microsoft, XBox, PS Store, and Nintendo eShop cards. I don't know if there's a limit to your purchases.

https://www.amazon.com/l/17985366011...

The 25% already includes the usual 5% off what you buy at Amazon, so this is really just an extra 20%.

Do you have to be a Prime member to be eligible for this? I get Prime from a family member, so not a Prime member per say, just free shipping. I do have a Prime credit card.

I do think you have to be a Prime member. You can get a 1-month free trial of Prime somewheres if you really want this and don't want to involve your family member.

Yeah I keep reading good stuff on Obra Dinn. And apparently the Switch version has solid performance. So I might actually play it there.

20 fps instead of the usual platform target of "hyperactive PowerPoint"?

It’s also on GamePass if you have access.

Is it? I'm not seeing it.

If it was, it's not there anymore.

Clock is kidding here. It runs fine on Switch, butter really. It's not like there's a giant open world, you're investigating static moments on a ship.

If anyone has >Observer on Epic (which you probably do; it was free there a while back) you can pre-order the remake (>Observer: System Redux) for 80% off on Epic. Brings it down to $6.

Yeah, I was totally off base on this.

For some reason when I read Obra Dinn, my brain went right to its cover art. Which I then managed to confuse with the cover art for What Remains of Edith Finch...which is on Game Pass.

I'm a damned liar. Sorry.

It's on Console Game Pass; not on PC Game Pass. Still a great game.

Just to be clear what "it" is: Edith Finch is on Console Game Pass. Obra Dinn is not on either branch of Game Pass.

Thank you. I had Edith Finch noted in my original version of that post commending the greatness of Edith Finch, before I actually did some research and discovered that Edith Finch was not on PC Game Pass, to my dismay.

Also: Edith Finch.

OK... so Return of the Obra Dinn, isn't on Game Pass therefor won't be returning (but may appear at some point).

What Remains of Edith Finch, remains on Game Pass console but not on Game Pass PC.

Got it

This game looks like a cool little indie title that I'm tempted to get at 75% off on Steam (it's highest discount)

FAR: Lone Sails

Octopath Traveler is half off on steam too. $29.99

Tempted to get it since it never goes on sale. I have my hands full though with WoW, Gears Tactics and possibly BG3 or Solasta.

It's Thursday, which means it's time again for free games on the Epic Game Store!

This week, you can pick up Costume Quest 2 and Layers of Fear 2.

Next week, look forward to Blair Witch and Ghostbusters The Video Game Remastered.

Spoiler:

Disclaimer: I have no idea if any of these are good. Costume Quest 1 was good, so I have reasonable hopes for CQ2.

Layers of Fear 2 is free?!?
Wow. That's nice. I got Layers of Fear 1 free so I'm thrilled.

There's also a Halloween-y sale on Epic.

Yeah now or never on those coupons they gave out for free games like Rocket League that expire on Oct 31 or Nov 1. Buy something already on sale for $14.99 for maximum savings I guess.

Yup. I've got two of those coupons that I'm trying to decide how to spend. It's a shame you can't stack them.

I just used 1 on Hades. Have a second one and no ideas for what I'd use it on.

Manifold Garden for $7 is a steal.

Looks like they added Control ultimate edition since their last sale. $18 after coupon. Maybe...

Manifold Garden, Superliminal, and Kine have been my frontrunners. Also eyeing Hellpoint and Mortal Shell on the off chance I'm interested in a Souls-like game right now.
