Fire Emblem Catch All

Awakening -

I have got to stop worrying about losing units. I have this habit of replaying every battle if I lose someone and that means I play most battles 2-3 times. That is getting old. I think I will change to easy where the units are just out of that fight. I want to finish the game I don't need to be perfect.

When I played Radiant Dawn, the mid-battle save was my best friend. I'm not sure how that feature ever made it into a Fire Emblem game. It felt so out of place but I didn't care.

The Turnwheel / Dragon Pulse is such a necessary feature of Fire Emblem games. Best thing I never knew I needed until playing Echoes (and now Three Houses).

I had to restart Awakening/Revelation maps so many times due to an enemy scoring that crit on a 1% or some random ninja chain pulling my units from being attacked once to being mauled by the entire enemy team. There is also the old standby of not seeing an enemy, enemies spawning and acting immediately, or just making a bad decision. I am so glad the Turnwheel and Divine Pulse exist.

I still played Three Houses on hard with permadeath but the addition of divine pulse meant that I didn’t really have a repeat of my Awakening experience.

Divine Pulse was the mechanic that pushed me over the edge to just play casual. If I’m already making use of that mechanic then I’m acknowledging that I’m not so into permadeath as a mechanic anymore.

Yeah, I can definitely see your point there.

Personally I care about it only because it gives me a sense of stakes. I like the feeling that my decisions have consequences and my units are at risk, but I don't like how punishing permadeath can be (especially with crits or low-probability events). And, I'm kind of compulsive about keeping everyone alive. So, Turnwheel / Divine Pulse feels perfect for me.

Marth!

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light finally localized for NA.

Why not just port Shadow Dragon from the DS?

Why is this a thing you have to buy as opposed to a game on the NES service we already pay for?

Money. More money.

Well it is just $6. But the nice collectors edition with NES cart replica and 200+ page art book is $50.

Ah. I might buy the art book just for fun, but it still feels like a weird release when they have a much better port of the game laying around. They could have done an Echoes style collection and done right by it.

This business where they slap a ROM and an emulator onto the store and call it a game release is really weird.

I'm still enjoying the 3D All Stars collection. I finished Sunshine and will likely finish Galaxy, but it's still a bit unseemly.

Yeah, I was really confused watching that announcement. First time outside of Japan? But didn't I play this already...?

That was my thought when I saw that too. I guess since it was a remake, it doesn't count? I don't see any reason to buy this since I have the DS game.

Pre-orders went up and down and up again at GameStop already.

Stinks that the special edition comes with a digital code.

And the digital release is also time-limited? C'mon Nintendo...

I can understand not just offering it up for free since it's a whole new localization with several modifications and therefore has some legit work put into it. I also expected them to put it on the Nintendo Online service, but I think it's cool they'd offer the original as a piece of gaming history up at all.

Regarding the DS version, that might actually be greater effort given the lack of two screens on the Switch. Plus, again, there's something about doing the original.

The only thing about this I dislike is the limited time element. If that was for the physical edition that'd make sense, but for digital as well? Bleh. Perhaps an attempt to encourage people that would otherwise sit on it indefinitely to take the plunge.

Either way, even if I'd prefer it be a part of Nintendo Online, it's cool to see them bringing the game over at all, and with additional adjustments to make it more palatable to modern audiences. $6 isn't a lot to pay for a piece of Nintendo's history.

When even the divine pulse can’t save you.

Oh, I miscalculated and moved Mercedes too far out, and a random Pegasus knight killed her? No big deal, I’ll just get the divine pulse ready.

Who’s up next? It’s the boss. And, the boss is charging forward. That’s a rude surprise, I definitely checked at the beginning (before some mid-map events) and he was stationary. Oh ... and now he’s engaging Dimitri. And he’s impairing himself on the end of Dimitri’s lance. F***. Guess I’m replaying that.

I'm currently just past the time skip on Three Houses. I chose the Black Eagles as my house, mostly because the internet recommended it. All of the characters seemed equally annoying and I wasn't really drawn to any of them, so I had trouble choosing. I love them all now though. Even the ones I still don't like.

Spoiler:

The mystery around the identity of the Flame Emperor was hilarious in an almost pantomime way though. Like, the Flame Emperor shows up, Edelgard leaves. He disappears and suddenly Edelgard comes back. And they point this out without a inkling of suspicion. I sided with her when the time came, but it almost feels like Blyeth is some kind of Ser Jorah. Again, it was kind of hilarious when the game's like "kill or protect her", then immediately after choosing to protect her she tells me "by the way Rhea is actually a monster that's secretly controlling the world". Could've told me earlier!

I went Black Eagles -> Blue Lions -> Golden Deer and each playthrough gave me more delicious info. Golden Deer has extra missions towards the end, as well.

Congrats on your progress, halfwaywrong! I'm slightly ahead of where you are, although I haven't played in about 12 months. I keep meaning to return to Fire Emblem and finish it - I want to see how it ends. For the Empire!

I found that sequence hilarious too. I mean, think about the logistics of someone as petite as Edelgard lugging the Flame Emperor costume everywhere. That's probably why her Strength stat is so high!

I have slowly been making my way through a Golden Deer game I started after I completed my Blue Lions run. I was wondering, what is a good time to play through the DLC chapter they released?

Imo? Before the next run you start. It gives you some nice boost items and a pseudo relic as well as some of the heritage resource I can’t remember the name of, renown or something? It’s a bit more difficult but at hard difficulty (lowest) I got like 5k renown for new games and the afore mentioned boost items/pseudo relic. I did it in one afternoon but it will definitely take 5+ hours if you’re like me. Much harder than the normal game with altered character pools.

Does it not tie into your current run then? Like it doesn't use your current characters and stuff, it's completely separate and high level content?

Yes, it's a completely separate save file. Set late-ish in the first half of the regular game.

I finished off Three Houses last night.

Like I mentioned before, I went the Edelgard path. I'm fairly happy with how it went, but the last half of the game was a little bit of a let-down in terms of story. It seemed like the end of the first half would have been the perfect set-up for the final battle. Everything that happened between then and the final battle seemed like fairly pointless diversions. Also, the between-battle stuff was really wearing thin by the second half.

Otherwise, no major complaints. Really loved this one. I think if I were to play this again, I'll be going the Golden Deer route, but I'm definitely going to want a break for a bit. Not sure if I'll pick up the DLC either. It sounds ok, but it seems a bit pricey for what it is for me.

I ended up really liking the limited battle roster too. A problem I've had with other FE games is that you get these characters that you'd like to see more of, learn more about them through support convo's etc, but there's no practical use for them in the team. But with more limited options, I was able to get to know all of my squads backstories and see them interact with each other.

It also makes me want to replay Blazing Blade and Path of Radiance - it's been a long time since playing either of those and it'd be interesting to see how they stack up.

But you missed the

Spoiler:

disco section?

...the what? I'm guessing I missed it because it doesn't sound like anything I saw.

Start another run with Golden Deer or do the other Black Eagle thing.

Trust me.

I'm intrigued. Looks like I might be starting my Golden Deer run sooner than I'd originally planned!

I played Golden Deer right after Black Eagle, and was glad I did. It had a very different perspective in the war and what was going on, including some very good set piece battles. One of which UpTolsomorphism was referencing.
