Nintendo Switch - Games You Can Play Right Now

Seriously, though, it was the Conference Call and the Bad End podcast that led me to believe that I'd be panting for Poseidon to poke me with his trident. Glad to hear it's not too over the top.

Jeez I've been here 11 years and still never listened to a call. It's like there are 3 different gwj communities between the call and forums and just people who game together.

Hah, same same That is a fascinating venn within such a small online community...

I’ve played a lot of the Hades, and I’ve seen a lot of the sex stuff on Twitter. The Twitter stuff is 99% head-canon. Stele is correct.

Pretty much.

Hades Hades Hades.

I'd be more down with Hades if it weren't for the fact that every time I hear people talk about Hades, they emphasize its xxxtreme sexiness, with every god's hawtness dialed up to 11. I must be the only person who finds that off-putting. Must be age. Back when I was a kid, the Greek gods looked like this.

Is Hades the kind of game one can play in mixed company? I kinda cringe thinking of my partner strolling by while I play a game with near-NSFW graphics.

To be super clear, there is more nudity in Clash of the Titans than Hades.

I'm looking to get into a dungeon-crawler roguelike but am paralyzed by choice... at this very moment, I'm tempted to hit buy on one of the games on sale that fit this category: Moonlighter or Children of Morta. Or should I go with the classic Diablo III? Or Torchlight II? Or even Deep Sky Derelicts? Tangledeep? Arrgh!

I love atmosphere and unique stories/perspectives -- but will always choose lighthearted and quirky over dismal and dark. I'm also more inclined to shorter play sessions, so something that requires a 30 minute-plus boss fight might not be for me.

I welcome any and all input!

Forget Hades, great game that it is, I've found you your proper turn based roguelike dungeon crawler:

The internet is gross and dumb. I've been playing this game with my 6 year old with absolutely no concern. It's not even very graphic on the violence front because pretty much everything you fight is some kind of ghost or skeleton thingy.

He's really enjoyed linking the cool video game characters to the greek myths we've read in the past, so it's honestly been a big win for us.

p.s. Hi! Been a while.

I totally see where the sexiness of the game is, but I have no real issue having my 9yo play.
Besides it's Greek mythology, the game is really toned down from the source material.

For proper turn-based roguelike dungeon crawlers, I'd make a couple additional recommendations.

Dragon Fang Z is an interesting take on the Mystery Dungeon family of roguelikes. While the level and progression design are similar to what you'd find in Shiren the Wandered or Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, the combat design has some interesting tweaks to force you out of the corridors and into the open, a big no-no in typical Mystery Dungeon games. The only drag with Dragon Fang Z is that the translation is very rough in places. It never quite hits PlayStation 2 Budget JRPG territory, but it's not as polished as we've become accustomed to.

Mistover is also a fun variation on the genre. It's a bit of a chimeric hybrid, taking influence from Mystery Dungeon, Darkest Dungeon, and Etrian Odyssey. Dungeon exploration is the top-down, tile-based exploration of the Mystery Dungeon series, but combat breaks out into a position-based model where you push and pull units around to affect their abilities, enhance your attacks, and coordinate powers between complimentary classes. It's a real hidden gem, in my opinion.

And here I thought Mistover came out and wasn't good based on reviews and such. Turns out, say, the Steam score is low and a large swath of the thumbs down were comparing it to Darkest Dungeon. It's not DD, it's a Mystery Dungeon game first and foremost.

On the wishlist it goes, again.

I'm 35 stars into Mario Galaxy. One of the things I'm really enjoying about playing these games for the first time *after* playing Mario Odyssey, is I can see where a lot of their recent design choices came from or evolved from.

- It's clear to me now that 3D Land and 3D World were simply an evolution of Nintendo already heading in the direction of taking more control of the camera. There are so many levels in Galaxy that feel really similar to something in 3D Land, but with just a little less size and scope to the level.

- In Galaxy they were clearly starting to play around with lives being meaningless. It confused me at first, but it appears lives reset to 4 every time you quit the game and restart. It seems like they were on a progression to where they eventually landed with Odyssey, that lives really shouldn't be a "thing" anymore.

- The levels where you're placed into a 2D perspective are fun, because they're obviously the predecessor to the 2D 8-bit levels in Odyssey.

- Similarly, the mechanic of shifting from the floor to the ceiling based on the "direction" of the gravity is something I first saw in Odyssey, but obviously started with Galaxy.

Overall I'm really enjoying the game, but especially because my path through 3D Mario history was like this.

Mario 64
Mario 3D Land
Mario 3D World (a few levels)
Mario Odyssey
Mario Sunshine
Mario Galaxy

Re: Mistover

It must have come out when I was on a GWJ break. I was pretty enthusiastic about it, and there would have been at least one positive review.

I know this isn't a new title by any stretch, but I've been playing New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe on the Switch. I never played this on the WiiU, nor NSMBWii on the Wii. I did play NSMB and NSMB2 on the 3DS, and I think I just assumed that NSMBWii and NSMBU were just higher-res ports of one of the 3DS games, so I ignored them completely. Regardless, I'm actually really enjoying NSMBUD on the Switch, at least as far as 5 worlds completed. The game is gorgeous, the sound design is really dialed in, and there are some delightful innovations that I'm enjoying; however the controls feel a bit floaty to me, which is totally 100% the reason I'm dying so much, yup that's it. >.>

Gotta say, me too. I passed it over because I thought it was a Darkest Dungeon-alike, and I didn't like DD at all.

Crown Trick looks great! Anyone here given it a whirl? And I removed Mistover from my wishlist due to the poor reviews... but I may also add it to the queue -- although I need to stop accumulating games for my new toy and actually start playing something other than Puyo Puyo Tetris!

A nearly 30-minute video does not qualify as a "quick look"

Apparently you're unfamiliar with Giant Bomb.
Or you're very familiar with Giant Bomb. Those are the only two options.

Children of Morta and Moonlighter are both on sale now matching their lowest prices ever, per Deku Deals.

I enjoyed them both but didn't finish Moonlighter. I adored and finished Morta and I'm looking forward to going back at some point.

I've barely scratched the surface on Hades but it's off to a great start.

No bad choice to be made here as far as I can tell.

You are correct.

I want Moonlighter but I already have it free from a Epic. But I've had it for months and never touched it, while I use the Switch every day.

Tokyo mirage sessions FE is finally on a good sale at $40 at Best Buy with Amazon matching. Anybody want to enable?

Or alternatively anyone want to sell their used copy for less than that?

It's a solid Persona-y game, with good J-Pop tunes, and a very bubblegum sweet story. If you're done with Persona 5, and craving more of same, it's not quite as stylish, and doesn't have romances (sorta). That said, I'm about 3/4ths through, I think, and I like it plenty.

I endorse this Tangleopinion. I liked TMS a bit more than Persona 5, personally, but a lot of that comes down to the pace of things. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is a lot shorter than the Persona games.

I’ll probably get it. I liked Persona 5 but it took me more than a year and a few long breaks to actually get through it. Would have probably liked it more as a 40 hour game.

I played Tokyo Mirage Sessions FE this year and loved it. I'm actually kinda bummed I sold my copy. I don't know what I was thinking but that was back in February, so in actually it was over a decade ago.

Having a lot of fun with this one. Was surprised to see it had only slightly above-average reviews. It's a mecha-themed boss rush game with some really fun design! Currently steeply discounted so I wanted to give it a shout out.

Just finished Galaxy. Pretty great game, but I think I still enjoyed Sunshine more. Is it worth going for 120 stars?
