Spelunky 2

I agree that it feels a bit harder than the original game, but health is also a little easier to come by so that helps balance it out. Small spoiler below:

Spoiler:

You can cook turkeys with bombs to heal yourself

It took me a few hours to be able to consistently get past the Dwelling stage, but I can now, so I expect it is just a matter of internalizing all the new stuff. My biggest challenge now is...

Spoiler:

Defeating Olmec at the end of world 2 without a bunch of bombs. I was never good about being able to kill him in the first game without a big stack of bombs, so I have already died to him like 5 times now.

I grabbed this last night and managed a few minutes before the debate. The biggest surprise so far for me is the default autorun setting. I'm probably going to set it to default to walking speed so I don't have to relearn my muscle memory but I was wondering if you folks are sticking with run by default?

It took me a day of dying reputedly but now I love it and would never go back to the walking pace.

I turned off autorun. I feel like it would encourage me to move too fast and not pay attention to my surroundings.

This is really foggy for me, but wasn't there some sort of daily challenge thing with the original Spelunky? It generated a unique challenge every day, or something like that. Is that a thing for this version as well? Sorry if this is a total newb question.

I'm learning to use autorun pretty well. I mostly had the button mashed down at all times in the original anyway.

And yep, there's a daily challenge.

Most excellent, thanks. I might give this a shot. It's pretty fun, it seems like? As good or better than the original?

It is basically the original plus a lot of extra content, so if you want more worlds, items, enemies, secrets, npcs, mounts, traps, etc then it is better.

A few in and I had to turn off autorun. I was rushing in to things way too much. It's no joke that this game way harder. I did manage to get through the first area tonight though.

I never beat the original, only made it to the final area a handful of times and I haven't played it in ages.

It feels way harder than I remember the original but I know from my experience before I have to sort of train my eyes to see the dangers before just walking into them. The increased diversity of stuff in the first area makes me excited to see what's coming up.

Having not played Spelunky 1, I thought the running was normal! I like how snappy it feels, but I've taken a tonne of deaths from silly mistakes.

It's interesting to hear what elements are giving veterans trouble.

I might have the record for shortest first run. I was dead within a second.

Well, I died during the tutorial. Twice!

I always had autorun set to on in spelunky 1. You do get used to it fairly quickly

Welp, I finally beat the final "final" boss. What a sense of accomplishment, I haven't felt this in a while. And it only took... 24 days and ~700 deaths to get there!

Spoiler:

I also got my first chance to play co-op on PSN, and it was a blast. If anyone is interested in co-op I'd love to get a regular game going on the GWJ Discord.

I'm still flailing around on the first few stages so I have little to say other than "wow!" And "congratulations!"

Wow I am very impressed well played!

If anyone is still playing this, would love to hear some hints about secrets, etc (such as- is there any gameplay dynamic in cursing NPCs?).

Today I learned that you can feed bugs to the lizards in the first few stages!

Probably completely useless and not a hint or secret at all, but I thought it was cute.

How much of a hint are you looking for? As far as I know the only curse related secrets involve cursing yourself.

Picked this up again after the world 1 rebalancing patch so I'm back playing. Have now been to the [final] boss room a handful of times. Yet to get there with useful equipment to score a kill. But I figure I'll do it in the next day or so. Then I'll work on getting there by the other branch. And then I'll start looking in to all the secret gubbins

My current skill/knowledge means I can consistently get to Tide Pools with the ankh in hand, so it does just feel like a matter of time before I get the boss kill. I think I'm around 400-500 deaths so far, but maybe a quarter of those are manual restarts if I don't like 1-1 (i.e couldn't get the pet or curse pot)

Edit: Killed the "final" boss. 2nd to last level was really punishing, lost my jetpack, lost 28 points of health! But I did pick up a shotgun which made the final kill a cinch. Stats say I have 497 deaths against 825 starts. So I must restart a lot more than I think.

Here's a fun one: sacrificing dice (not die) to the altar. It does stuff.

I finally got a chance to put some actual time into playing this weekend. Got to Vlad's castle, picked up his cape, somehow pissed off the hired help that I was keeping for blood even though I'm pretty sure I didn't wipe him, got immediately wiped to death by said hired help.

It's incredible how bad I am at the Olmec fight. It's made worse by the fact that I'm too pig-headed to move on without the ankh.

Learn to do the olmec skip to get the ankh without doing the fight

I finally beat Tiamat after 387 deaths (please ignore the 1536 starts as that's clearly a bug). It took a lot of willpower not to go to Sunken City since I had Qilin, Kapala, a jetpack and 30+ bombs but I needed the Tiamat exit for the character unlock and achievements anyway. I would have been really mad at myself anyway if I had gotten to Hundun without the bow.

Now I need to focus on Temple, City of God, Duat, Mothership runs for journal progress.

I got to level 2 yesterday

Yeah, these other guys may as well be talking ancient Arameic for all the sense it makes to me.

I've gotten to the point where I can get to level 2 maybe half of the time. That said, I'm still very much in an exploratory mode - f'rinstnace - I haven't figured out if I can actually kill the hedgehog boss guy in Level 1 yet. Keep trying though - I'd get to level 2 much more frequently if I just bypassed the dude instead of keeping banging my head against that wall.
