[News] Protests Against Police Violence After Death of George Floyd

Discuss police violence, the victims of police violence (including George Floyd and Breonna Taylor), the Black-led protests against said violence, and related topics.

I hate being right.

Extrajudicial killing of a US Citizen occurs on American soil by 2024.

I hate myself for even thinking of this and putting a date on it. Also, I'll put $5 on the "under" for the second prediction.

did you mean to write 1824 there? Cause that's pretty much always been a thing.

Ignoring any actions involving adblocking and disabling JavaScript, it could be that if you (On Windows) CTRL-A as soon as the page appears then CTRL-V into your word processor of choice, you could hypothetically read the text of a paywalled article.

A bit tangential but this is a shameful incident from my home country:
Halloween decorations including hanging body bag draw comparisons with lynching

A front yard Halloween display depicting white cloth figures and a fake body bag hanging from a tree south of Adelaide have prompted complaints to police.

The decorations have been described as looking like the scene of a lynching.

McLaren Vale man Daniel Abbie put up the display in his front yard and said he was surprised to receive a visit from police yesterday.

Mr Abbie said that, after receiving the feedback, he now planned to alter the display.

"Once they realised I wasn't who they thought were expecting to meet on the driveway, we had a good laugh and they ended up saying they loved the idea of the ghost," he said.

Who they were expecting to meet...? A card carrying KKK member?

Ahh Australia, land of the wilfully, cheerfully ignorant racist. I know we all have our deeply embedded race issues in the colonies, but this one is cringeworthy from beginning to end...

I'm... not seeing the problem?

Someone was kind of an idiot and put up an offensive display without realizing it was offensive. The authorities informed them of the problem and asked them to change it. They politely complied.

Like, isn't all that how it's SUPPOSED to work in polite society?

Sure, it would have been nice if the person hadn't put it up in the first place, but if all ignorance in the world were addressed this easily, it would be a much better place.

Who they were expecting to meet...? A card carrying KKK member?

I mean, probably.

You can't lay blame on Australia. It's everywhere.... Go ahead and search Amazon for "Hanging Body Halloween" You'll find 7 pages worth of results.

I really wanted to put a giant spider and web between our two big Oak Trees and have a bunch of cocooned bodies. Considering all that's going on right now I decided not to.

Yeah please don't spoil December's Giant Spider Surprise for the rest of us.

It’s the wilful obliviousness followed by the laffs and pats on the back that get me... And trust me, I can imagine the conversation since I’m sure it’s the same one I have every time I pull up a family member for using terms like ‘darkie’ (yup, still a thing over here!). It starts with wounded innocence and ends with a joking shrug of the shoulders that indicates I should really stop getting offended on behalf of the ‘abbos’ as they’re fine with everything now and anyway this whole BLM thing is rubbish since they only really get what they deserve - police treat everybody equal, you do the crime you do the time (oh, but if you’re black and on their radar you’ll also get the sh*t beaten out of you regularly by the cops anyway just to keep you in line).

The telling thing is that the BLM stuff comes up entirely unprompted nowadays which indicates that the lady doth protest too much but what do I know, I’m just getting my nose out of joint for someone else’s non-existent problems...

Can someone give an update on Philly? I’ve watched the video of Walter Wallace Jr and man that’s a tough situation. Obviously the city needed to deploy some mental health specialists and the cops should have had tasers. But once things had progressed as far as they did, I’m not sure I can fault the cops for shooting if he in fact charged with a knife (I’m hearing that may be in dispute now).

Also, I was wondering if the unrest is being blown out of proportion or if large swathes of the city have been affected.

I haven't looked yet but if the cops say the suspect of color had a weapon it's almost always a lie.

They often mysteriously acquire weapons after they are dead.

The victim was shot 10 times as well.

Clearly the deceased shouldn't have brought a fictitious knife to a cop fight.

Every time this happens it makes me furious. I'm furious way too much.

At least this month I was able to do something. In the Pima County Sheriff election, I voted for the guy who is in favor of reforming the department (the other guy also claims he is, but his idea of "reform" is highly problematic), and voted against the guy who instituted racial profiling and who brags about his border enforcement action (which is not part of the Sheriff Dept. jurisdiction, despite Pima County having over 120 miles of border with Mexico).

The guy I voted against was also instrumental in persecuting prosecuting the faith-based group "No More Deaths" that sets up way stations for immigrants in the desert. You may have heard of the Scott Warren case, as it made national news being an indicator of the Trump administration's oppressive border enforcement.

I live in the county, not in the city of Tucson, so Sheriff Dept. policy is rather important to me, especially considering that I live in a racially diverse community.

In Philadelphia:
- Young mother inadvertently encounters line of police at a protest while driving home
- Cops tell her to turn around
- She tries to turn around
- Cops surround the SUV, smash the windows, yank the passengers from the car
- (since she didn't do anything wrong, cops are later unable to find any crime to charge her with, so she's eventually let go...after being taken to the hospital because of how badly they beat her)
- Cops grab her 2-year-old son, he's later located in a cop car in his car seat with glass from the windows they smashed still in it
- Cop union uses photos of the child to imply that the cops saved him from abandonment and that, rather than being violently kidnapped by cops, the kid had been wandering barefoot in the streets
- The police have not returned the car

WP: Police took a Black toddler from his family’s SUV. Then, the union used his photo as ‘propaganda,’ attorneys say.
The Philadelphia Inquirer: Video surfaces showing Philadelphia police bashing SUV windows, then beating driver while child was in backseat

The implications of that statement make me want to vomit.

Kentucky State Police training slideshow quotes Hitler, advocates ‘ruthless’ violence

Yeah that's a high school newspaper that caught these assholes.

Updates at the top of the story as governor and US rep (both Dems) are horrified and look into it.

No word from Moscow Mitch of course.

From the article:

In a deposition on October 14, KSP Captain James Goble said that Lieutenant Curt Hall, whose name is on the slideshow, taught “warrior mentality” trainings at the KSP Academy.

Hall was the Assistant Commander at the KSP Academy from 2005 to 2015, and later became Commander of Internal Affairs at KSP before recently retiring. The internal affairs unit is typically tasked with investigating police misconduct.

Good to know he went from inculcating Nazi values to overseeing misconduct "investigations", before enjoying a nice pension. White people suck.

Man. The name James Gobel is eerily close to Joe Goebbels.

Thought that too.

If Im not misreading this, a protest organizer was murdered last night/this morning in Louisville. The left needs to organize for self defense, or this sort of sh*t is going to keep happening.

Yeah I read about the traffic stop where a LMPD officer shot and killed the driver that the article briefly mentions before bed last night. Then this a couple hours later.

Maybe I'm misreading, I read your post as making an association between the driver that was shot and Hamza “Travis” Nagdy. I don't think that has been shown? Was Hamza at the protest?

The shooting came about two hours after a Kentucky police officer fatally shot a man during a traffic stop for a stolen car Sunday night, leading a small crowd to gather at the scene and call for answers moments later.

I actually screwed up when I posted that link. It leads to the front page of MSN crime I think...

Here's the right article (I think)

Robert Evans has put together a series of podcasts called "Why Portland?" Well, at least the first episode is called that. Definitely a must listen. Right now I think it's just in the Behind the Bastards Feed.
