[News] Coronavirus

A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

f*cking vanity and hubris from the White House

(CNN)The first masks arrived on the White House grounds in February by special order of the National Security Council, mobilizing early on to address the emerging threat of the coming coronavirus.
"If you have the whole West Wing running around wearing masks, it wasn't a good look," one administration official recalled of the directive that came down from senior staff and lawyers.
The West Wing wanted to "portray confidence and make the public believe there was absolutely nothing to worry about," the official said, revealing the image-conscious reason for the opposition to masks for the first time.

Wisconsin reported a new highest death count today.

27 people died of Covid-19 Wednesday, according to the state's Covid-19 website. For context, the state reported its second highest death count on May 27 at 22.
The state is also reporting a record high of at least 683 Covid-19 related hospitalizations, up from the 646 that were reported Wednesday.

The percentage of available hospital beds dropped one percentage point to 17%. It was 18% Wednesday. Twenty-nine percent of hospitalized Covid-19 patients are in intensive care units, down slightly from yesterday's report of 32%, according to the website.

Thirteen hundred and fifty-four people have died of Covid-19 in the state of Wisconsin, according to the website.

And of course Trump has two rallies scheduled in the state this weekend. It's not exaggeration at this point to say that the man brings plague and pestilence with him wherever he goes.

Currently, one of Green Bay’s four hospitals has more patients than the entire city had at its peak in April, Dr. Casey told CNN on Thursday. He said he hopes the national attention on the coronavirus cases in the community “will get people to wake up.”

SARS and MERS both showed symptoms very early in the disease progression allowing us to stop it very quickly. SARS-CoV-2 has been a stealth virus which has greatly diminished our ability to control its spread and paired with how deadly and damage causing it can be (still not huge like Ebola but not insignificant either) is why we are here now. We haven't seen a virus like this in a long long time. Also, with all the research we are doing right now to defeat SARS-CoV-2 we will have a lot of ammunition for other coronaviruses like SARS and MERS. We will have a template to create a vaccine and have additional treatments.

Yeah yeah yeah... Every country in Europe has their sh*t together. Us and Brazil (hm, 2 incompetent racist leaders) are the only ones who can't get it under control.

Doesn't mean that it's not true. In fact, I hope that it IS true. I definitely don't want to go back to the same "normal" we had before the pandemic. I want to go into the future with a much better "normal" than we've ever had.

I am repetitively smashing the like button and it is not going up

I am curious about what is meant here though. Are we talking the political situation, if so I would whole heartedly agree. If we are talking about 10 years from now living like hermits, not meet friends and family or go to events in fear of a virus, having to wear protective gear just to leave the house, that is today's normal but I not sure that is a normal I am looking forward to in our future. Sounds more like a post apocalyptic movie to me.

I want to go into the future with a much better "normal" than we've ever had.

This is what I support. I agree that being stuck in quarantine and social distancing is not anyone's idea of a better "normal".

Even if we have several more years of wearing protective equipment, we have the ability to do daily, large scale rapid testing now. We just have an administration and political party that doesn't believe it is important.
So even right now we have that method to make this "normal" a lot better and a lot less isolated.

I don't think we have to worry about getting back to normal no matter what that might mean

27 US states are reporting an uptick in Covid-19 cases. Here's a look at where infections are rising.

And we haven't even started the flu/cold season.

Hope Hicks has tested positive for the coronavirus.

She has travelled multiple times with Trump this past week. What are the chances Trump uses this as an excuse to not attend the next debate(s).

Wishing death upon people is a violation of the CoC ~dee

I think I could handle a 2020 twist where Trump dies of COVID right before the election. Might even make me give the whole god thing another go.

That wouldn't be god you have to thank. That would be Trump's bill coming due with the devil.

Dude, spoilers! The New York Times were saving that bit for their last article on his taxes!

Losing the popular vote by millions, getting impeached, having half the country hate him, and exposing all his family's dirty, criminal laundry actually sounds like a deal only Trump could negotiate.

The art of the deal, indeed

Update: Donald and Melania Trump to begin quarantining. A shame this quarantining won't keep him away from his phone.

And Biden was within spitting distance of Trump the other night during the debate.

Trump will have a mild or asymptomatic case and we will never f*cking hear the end of it.

They were social distanced and if Trump was infected at the time it was probably in the very early stages, I wouldn’t particularly worry about Biden.

Boris Johnson is younger than him and was at serious risk of dying, if I was a betting man I would not put money on Trump having a mild case. Or maybe he will, universe universe seems to have a sick sense of humor.

But if he does, bragging about it is not going to help him. Over 200,000 people are dead, their families are not going to take kindly to Trump trumpeting about how easily he got over it.

The Dems have really gone all-out with this hoax. I'm impressed.

This is absolutely what 2020 will give us.

Also, if this is what October 1 has given us (and a sliver of October 2), holy sh*t buckle the f*ck in for the next 30 days. It's going to be the worst advent calendar ever.

Spoiler:

EDIT: Oh, I know what the Hellworld answer is. Trump gets it, it's mild, he's fine and gets to be He-Man Virus Puncher, but he gave it to Biden at the debate and Biden is either seriously sickened or killed by it. I am putting my $20 down now.

Herman Cain is looking up/down from wherever he is yelling "REVENGE IS MINE!!!"

No way. Peak 2020 is he’s asymptomatic and we never f*cking hear the end of it, but Melanie dies and in a swell of sympathy Trump is re-elected.

Can we wait until one of them starts showing symptoms before we start catastrophizing about how the presidents much younger wife dying of the disease he has spent months down playing while hundreds of thousands of people died is going to lead to an upsell of sympathy carrying him to reelection after consistently being down 7-12 points in the polls?

Or at least 24 hours.

Dude. It was a joke in the vein of previous jokes about worse case scenarios.

Given 2020, I had the same thought about Melanie. Not that I want her or even Trump to die from it.
My real, fully impossible, hope is they get a bit of perspective and humility from this.

My apologies, seriously. This year has broken my sarcasm/irony detector if nothing else.

Was he positive during the debate?

No worries. Apology accepted. This year has been tough for sure.

Yeah, I see two endpoints for this story at this point...

1. They both survive it relatively unscathed, and we go full super-outbreak as all the dipsh*ts who were not taking it seriously go into overdrive.

2. One or both die, and we have a group of white supremacists who were just told to be on stand by with a potentially dead or almost killed dear leader... and I'm sure they'll all be super rational and realize this was entirely his own fault for his horrendous handling of this and prooooobably his health in general, and nothing else will happen.

*goes into full existential dread mode*

HAAAAAAAAAAA, thank you, I needed that laugh.
