That game was so awesome

I just voted, which probably means that everything is now NOT going well, and we have a three-way tie again.

Why not a four-way tie?

You mean a tore fae why. Have you not been paying attention?

Well, things are definitely... interesting.

Well, cat's out of the bag, the thread is already up. However, the next game shall be...

The Secret of Monkey Island!!

With 16 participants casting a total of 46 votes, folks voted for 2.9 games on average (versus 2.6 last month!).
The Secret of Monkey Island placed first with a clear majority of 10 votes (62.50%). The Sexy Brutale placed second with 6 votes (37.50%) and no fewer than three games shared the bronze (5 votes, 31.25%): Contradiction - Spot the Liar!, Machinarium and Solstice. The Longest Journey placed fourth with 4 votes (25.00%), Tesla Effect, The Darkside Detective and Syberia shared fifth place with 3 votes each (18.75%). Gone Home came in last with only two votes (12.50%), and as such, it's going on probation, while Machinarium has been cleared of it.

You'll find the thread for the game over this way. How exciting!

Nice! Time to download it to - checks where it owns it - my PS3.

Ah well, looks like my picks weren't that popular this month. I'll be skipping TSoMI as I've already played it, a long time ago Have fun on the Island!

I played through the game two or three times when it first came out, and then once more when I got the Special Edition about six or seven years ago. Perhaps my favorite adventure game of all time.

Heads up for those of you with Twitch Prime (or Twitch Games, or whatever they're calling it now), The Darkside Detective is one of the free games this month, and absolutely worth your time. (and it's on the list of candidates)

Can you believe that we're already voting for the 25th GWJ adventure game? It's right this way, and will close at midnight on October 27th. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, you'll find quick descriptions for this month's candidates with playtime estimates from HLTB (How Long To Beat).

  • Dreamfall: The Longest Journey (2006, HLTB 14) - The sequel to Longest Journey focuses on Zoe, a young woman returning to her home in Casablanca after dropping out of college in Cape Town. Her life feels rudderless until her old flame Reza disappears. As she investigates, she learns about the worlds of Stark and Arcadia, and those that would bring the worlds into chaos.
  • Technobabylon (2015, HLTB 10) - Set in the cyberpunk city of Newton, the game tasks you with helping Latha Sesame uncover the truth about a recent attempt on her life. In a world where technology allows acces to the Trance, a virtual reality system people become addicted to, all is not what it seems.
  • The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 (2016, HLTB 20) - "The game's four protagonists, Wilbur a novice gnome mage, Nate a narcissistic human, Ivo an elf princess and a furry alien creature known as "Critter", partake in an adventure in the fantasy land of Aventasia. A magic force is turning beasts into puppies and castles into dollhouses."
  • Loom (1990, HLTB 3) - A classic. It does away with the verb interface and uses the beautiful music of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake. With three difficulty levels, it's accessible even for those who aren't musically inclined.
  • Machinarium (2009, HLTB 6) - A puzzle point and click by Amanita Design. While it may be a bit complex, it makes up for in charm. The soundtrack is drop dead gorgeous, the hand-drawn art is absolutely amazing.
  • Flight of the Amazon Queen (1995, HLTB 8) - Inspired by Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Flight of the Amazon Queen centers on pilot Joe King's quest to rescue actress Faye Russel and overthrow his Dutch rival Anderson. His travels will take him through the Amazon jungle and face to face with mad scientist Dr Frank Ironstein. This one is free on GOG, but also available on Google Play and iOS (prices ranging from 3-5$).
  • Forgotton Anne (2018, HLTB 7) - An adventure game with platformer elements, Forgotton Anne has you control Anne, an Enforcer who maintains order and sets out to extinguish a rebellion which could keep her from leaving the magical parallel universe of lost objects which she inhabits.
  • Subsurface Circular (2017, HLTB 3) - Mostly text based, but with a third-person perspective, you play as a robot detective investifating the disappearances of a number of robots. As you travel in the Subsurface Circular (a subway for all intents and purposes), you will meet many different robotos or "Teks." Really enjoyed this one, it went on my GOTY list back in 2017 and I'd replay it gladly.
  • Zork: Nemesis (1996, HLTB 6) - Travel through five mind-bending worlds to discover the ancient secret of Alchemy that will free the trapped souls from evil’s grip... Do you dare enter the Forbidden Lands? This is and always will be my favorite adventure game of all time. (and check out the amazing soundtrack by Mark Morgan!)
  • Eleima's Pick : Ghost Pirates of Vooju Island (2010, HLTB 10) - I'd actually never heard of this game until I was flipping through my copy of "The Art of Point and Click Adventure Games". Created by LucasArts alumnus William Tiller, it shares many commonalities of The Curse of Monkey Island. THe thing that caught my eye are the drop dead gorgeous, painted backgrounds, making great use of depth and perspective.

Survey is over here. Vote away!

Voted.

I'd also like to nominate Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, a game I started multiple times on the c64, but never got very far in, probably largely due to being a kid still.

The version available on gog/steam looks a lot prettier, so I wouldn't mind seeing if the gameplay holds up.

Fifteen votes so far, I have a winner for the moment, but you folks seem to like ties, so go ahead and give it a shot.
That's a good nomination, AUs_TBirD, I don't think my sister and I ever finished that one, we always got stuck... I remember the kazoo though... I'll second it.

Nominated (still needs two confirmations):
The Inner World (2013) - brokenclavicle
Riven (1997) - Minarchist
Detention - Neutrino
Morningstar: Descent to Deadrock - Neutrino

Seconded (still needs one confirmation):
Myst 3: Exile (2001) - Eleima, Higgledy
Little Briar Rose (2016) - brokenclavicle, Pink Stripes
Anna's Quest - Neutrino, Pink Stripes
Lamplight City (2018) - Taharka, Eleima
Fred Pohl's Gateway (1992) - Tanglebones, bbk1980
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders - AUs_TBirD, Eleima

Thirded (going on the list):
None at this time.

Pool of candidates and past threads and picks are available here.
Feel free to add nominations, folks, I don't hear you chime in on those as often as we used to!

I will third Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. That was a game I was interested in playing in the early 90's but did not get a chance until the late 90's and by then it seemed past its prime. Wonderful name though, and I'd be willing to try it again.

I will third Lamplight City!

Roger that, here's the new list:

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand now we have a tie. Thanks, Redherring. It's a good tie though. I like this tie.

My work here is done

Looking forward to it!

Nemesis was soooo close!!

Ah well. Loom is certainly a very good pick in its own right.

I knooooooow! I might actually just stream it sooner rather than later, just because I love it so much.
