Weekly Drawing Prompt Thread

For 'Fragile', I went for an 'icy rose' theme (I kind of like drawing plants when I'm low on inspiration):

I love your artwork Mario. It always evokes an emotional response from me.

I agree, Mario's art always exhibits a degree of personality and life that I still struggle to instill in a lot of my own art, particularly when I try and draw people.

Very cool, Ravanon! As usual, I love your color work. (It's so, so much better than mine.)

Also, thank you for your kind words --you're going to make me blush! Silliness aside, it does mean a lot, and I am glad you enjoy my drawings.

Here's my "hats" for this week:

Not one of the prompts, but proof i can still actually draw things!

My next D&D PC. Done in a 'Hades' style.

Love the amulet and the shield! (and the pants)

Nice!

I just saw this week's prompt: "dungeon." It should be fun!

EDIT: Oh, no! Ravanon, ignore this post until you've posted your "hats" drawing! My bad!

The Hades style is really good (both yours and the artwork in the game, I mean).

Here's my 'hats' (with people underneath the hats!):

Post, what post? [Uploads image.] Oh, that post...

...dungeon, huh?

That's Certis on the right! ;P

It's that time of year folks! CREATober is ON!

This year, in honour of 2020, that most cursed of years, i will be creating (hopefully) 31 cursed items for D&D, with illustrations, base on the Dms Guild discord prompt list.

Probably need to open in a new window to read.

1/31: The Howling Rose

Very cool, pyxistyx!

As for myself, here's my "dungeon." I wish I had had more time to draw it, but it is what it is:

On the topic of not having time, I have decided not to participate in Inktober this month, even though I would love to, and even though it will break my five-year streak. Doing the weekly Inktober52 drawings has become very difficult this semester, and adding seven more drawings a week will be all but impossible. Instead of having fun, I will be even more stressed than I currently am, so there is no point in putting myself through that. I will continue doing the Inktober52 challenges, but the 31 drawings in a month will simply have to wait. Which makes me wonder... maybe I could do that in December. I should have more time then, and nothing really says it has to be done in October (well, other than the actual rules of the challenge, but I think those, like the Pirate Code, are more like guidelines). So, if I did it in December, I would not break my streak. Hmmm...

In any case, Happy Inktober to everyone, whether or not you participate. If you do, please post your drawings for our viewing pleasure!

Very nice, pyxistyx. So it's prompt + adjective modifier for each day of the month then?

Yeah, it sounds like that's probably best for your situation as you describe it. I certainly don't see any real reason you can't just postpone the challenge to better suit you. On that note, I've only just noticed that it's the 1st, so I'm already on the back foot. I'm not even sure what prompt list to use...

Back to the weekly stuff though, here's my 'dungeon':

I was originally going to draw in some adventurers descending the spiral platform, but ran out of time, so it's going to have to stay an environmental piece.

Looks great.
There is however a small typo in the 2nd paragraph under The Curse, "

... but it has been trained to to completely devour the person...

The second "to" is probably meant to be "not".

i'm sure there's a ton of spelling mistakes, i'm just trying to rattle these off quick and i'll clean them up later.

Still no prompt for Inktober52 as far as I can tell, but lots of cross-promotional stuff with Primal and daily prompts for the Inktober challenge proper. I feel a little left out...

Yeah, I've been keeping an eye out, but haven't found it (and am still too stubborn to sign up for the mailing list).

I did spend some time drawing my current Skyrim character on a whim during the weekend, so I'm sort of hoping the prompt will randomly be fulfilled by that...

Same.

That would be convenient!

I had some free time to draw yesterday, but since we had no prompt I colored some Day of the Dead decorations I had bought for my classroom back in August instead. It was fun, so I consider that time well spent.

IMAGE(https://smackfolio.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/6-liber-animatum.jpg)

Not gonna lie, I think the visual of a "membranous pamphlet" is my favourite creation so far

Are you inventing the items themselves? Those last two have been outstanding ideas.

yep. mostly off the top of my head as i'm drawing the images, to be honest.
* I can't guarantee they aren't riffs off of or similar to objects i might have encountered in the past and just forgotten about though ('there is no new art' , etc)

IMAGE(https://smackfolio.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/7_-_weeping_skull.jpg)

Since last week's Inktober52 prompt is nowhere to be found and the new one is due tomorrow (we'll see about that), I just went ahead and drew a little picture in between classes that will serve as this week's masterpiece. I call it "Portrait of the Artist Having Fun."

IMAGE(https://i.imgur.com/EVLZWFC.jpg)

Okay, I'm also going to default to 'something that I drew in the last week'.

This is based on a current Skyrim playthrough, after my Breton mage got out of Markarth wearing a slightly incongruous mix of vampire and Forsworn equipment that gave her a something of a goth-punk vibe:

IMAGE(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0GonhOwqPNg/X37cdPWY54I/AAAAAAAABsk/4Gr0bPWDUX4UcqNNJuEK0ZAZFgr3KJCrACLcBGAsYHQ/s1025/40%2BMisery.png)

But I guess you can get away with wearing anything when you're the Dragonborn.

(On an artistic note, I really need to be more careful about my placement of limbs in the initial sketching stage—I'm always ending up with the same awkward, stiff poses in my characters. Dammit.)

i know that problem only too well. getting dynamic and interesting poses is the bane of my existence.

anyway - day 8!

IMAGE(https://smackfolio.files.wordpress.com/2020/10/8-ibis-oubliette.jpg)

Very nice, Ravanon and pyxistyx!

Regarding stiffness in characters, it is always so hard to avoid! A lot of the time, my sketches look a lot more dynamic than the end result. I think it's because when I'm sketching, form is very loose and everything is all over the place, but when I'm finishing the drawing I keep thinking "Well, a leg wouldn't do that," or "Elbows don't bend that way." I think more cartoony styles lend themselves better to being dynamic precisely because of that: because you can exaggerate motion and proportions, and the characters don't look weird or out of place. With more realistic fare it is much more difficult!
