NFL 2020: Week 1

I’ll also go with 11-5 for the Pack.

Anyone watching this on the NBC app? The stream is going on and out of quality for me.

Figured it was on Peacock now. Been meaning to try to stream a few things there.

That's just what Texans football looks like.

Sports managed to dodge the issue of racism among its fandom due to how soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, and baseball operated under COVID restrictions* so this is the first time sports is going to have to confront this.

* I'm guessing either no one noticed or no one cared if something like this happened during NASCAR.

Andy Reed needs some of those no-fogging glass wipes.

Oh look, a white power/diving gesture.

What happens when the 1st NFL player dies due to covid?

According to Kirk Cousins, nothing if it's him.

Typical lackluster performance from the Texans so far. Watt still doesn't have his motor back, just looks slow. He hasn't been the same since his back surgery a few years ago. The rest of the defense looks soft. Still no coverage in the backfield.
Offensive line is still weak, with Watson getting rushed often. Will Fuller can't get separation, and will be injured by week 6 anyway. Johnson is not able to take advantage of the few running lanes that the line does open.

7-9 this year, and maybe a coaching change next season. One can hope.

Purely for Jags fan reasons, I do not look forward to the day when Bill O'Brien is gone. I doubt they'll do worse at coach, and they can't possibly do worse at GM unless they bring in Ryan Grigson or Coughlin or something.

Brandin Cooks playing on a quad injury, and you can tell because he is separating from n o b o d y.

Chiefs!

And f*ck the bigots.

I'm starting to wonder if the NFL and/or NBC has a gag order in regards to discussing racist fans:

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt expressed confusion over the reaction after the games.

“The moment of unity I personally thought was good,” Watt said, via James Palmer of NFL Media. “I mean the booing during that moment was unfortunate. I don’t fully understand that. There was no flag involved. There was nothing involved other than two teams coming together to show unity.”

He’s right. It made no sense to boo. It wasn’t political in any way. But even an expression of unity has become political in this upside-down era of ours, because apparently everything must be viewed through a political lens, in the eyes of those who tolerate political viewpoints that mesh with their own but chafe in the face of any political viewpoints different than theirs as an invasion on their “escape” from having to deal with things that make them uncomfortable.

So what about a plea for unity makes someone uncomfortable? And if someone is made uncomfortable by an expression of unity, doesn’t that say more about them than about the people striving for something so basic and fundamental?

There's a word. Starts with an R. Ends with an -ism or an -ist depending on if you're speaking of a belief or of a person.

I told a fan on a St. Louis board that was complaining about Goodell saying Black Lives Matter was glad to see the NFL making it clear they don't need your bigot dollar.

And I was glad to see that the NFL seems to be all-in on changing the NFL from a corporate league to a player-first league. At least, that's what the players are asking for, and I think there was a good faith effort on the NFL to provide that.

They are going to peel off a lot of fans in Missouri, and I'm happy to see it. It is blood money to accommodate those that can't respect the league allowing the players to dictate the personality of the league to a much larger extent. We will see how long it lasts.

I am positive Trump voters did not feel welcome tonight. I'm curious what the reaction in the St. Louis press is going to be tomorrow. I suspect we won't hear anything. But Chiefs games are being broadcast on radio here now, on KMOX. KMOX signed Limbaugh as t heir first syndicated host in the early 2000's. The station is as conservative and batsh*t crazy as Fox now, which sucks because it has a pretty rich history in St. Louis. But I wonder how that is going to go down.

I'm assuming the season won't finish, but I'm going to enjoy what little good might come out of it. If the NFL feels like they can't afford to lose the bigot dollar after this, then they will lose my dollar. But I suspect that even they know there is going to be a right and wrong side of history, and if you want the NFL to be around in 10-20 years, they better be on the right side.

Time will tell.

NFL is changing from a corporate league to a player first league?

I dunno about that. If anything they are dragging themselves towards 2020 embarrassingly. They might have just crossed over from out of the 80s. Hardly ready to pat them on the back quite yet. Were talking about the summer that Washington finally dropped their name. I don't think that was even from league pressure.

Yeah, the league chose to use the term "End Racism" which is about as vanilla as you can possibly get. It allows the folks on the wrong side of history to nod along and say, "Yes, I am against racism. Racism is white hoods and 'Whites Only' lunch counters and we don't have any of that anymore. So everything is fair now and you thug athletes that are so different from me need to be happy with how good you've got it and shut up and ball."

The are also playing Lift Every Voice before every game. They are letting player put social messsfes on their helmet. Much of this was dictated by the players.

Last night was not a solution, but it was a positive step forward. But it’s also why I said we’ll see how long it lasts, and if it doesn’t I’m out.

It's baby steps for the NFL. I wish they would take bigger strides, but I'm glad to see some forward movement. It's not like there's not a template for it -- all they have to do is look at the NBA, which is where I suspect some players are taking their cues.

I was 100 percent not surprised (but I was 100 percent disappointed) to hear booing last night. I live in a part of the world where fans lobbied hard for Browns reject Derek Anderson to start at QB over a certain very tall and very athletic current Boston-area resident because, you know.

Lots of people root for the jersey and not the guys inside. And when the guy takes off his helmet and declares I AM A MAN lots of folks seem bothered by that all of a sudden. There's a whole lot of cognitive dissonance going around, and it's not limited to politics.

I keep thinking of this:

I've been pretty open that I was basically done as an NFL fan, but Mahomes is my exception. That's who I'm a fan of. And right now, he is using his platform to demand the NFL change their culture. I'm going to celebrate that and hope it takes. If it doesn't then I'm out. But I'm going to stick around for as long as Mahomes is using his voice to move the NFL forward.

Big picture, I'm still not sure it matters. I still think the NFL has a much shorter shelf life that many understand. The nature of the sport is dangerous for head injuries. But maybe peeling off a certain base may allow the NFL to adapt its rules to safer gameplay?

Bread and circuses for the masses.

‘I’m there to watch football.’ Chiefs superfan X-Factor says he’ll skip next game

Ty Rowton, better known as X-Factor, wrote on Twitter: “My streak of 329 games at Arrowhead will come to end. Xfactor wont go back until full capacity happens. I’m there to watch football not having social issues force feed by NFL”

Cool. You weren't that a big a deal anyway, and if you are conservative snowflake, you are not welcome anyway.

And now the Chiefs need to actually end the damn chop. They tried a BS move yesterday, to try and link the chop to beating the drum, so fans are supposed to close their hands, making it "different." Instead, it turned into something your racist uncle does so he can say, "See, I'm not racist!"

If you get to the point that you finally accept that the chop is offensive to enough people that it need s to be changed, removing it is the only option. You can't pretend its not racist anymore. The Chiefs and the NFL will now have to pick their fans. How they move forward will affect my interest in the league.

Two friends of mine said this after I commented it was a shame about the boos with during the apolitical showing of union:

I am sick of that being part of everything though. Can we have just a freaking football game take out the drama or the stances or the Covid'
I'm sick of everything becoming political. And that's what all this is IMO. It's become a "if you're not with us, you're against us" world.

Both Trump voters, natch.

Yeah I hate when athletes protest at sports events over tax rates, campaign finance reform, and public spending. Keep politics out of my sports bro.

Hmm I know I've heard that line somewhere...

I was pretty disappointed by Missouri last night. Those boos were embarrassing. I was, however, very proud of the players.

Naturally.

I lost my sh*t on someone recently who said similar sh*t by saying that the rest of us had to endure 19 solid years of celebrations to American militarism at every possible venue because Bush ignored intelligence on some Saudi buddy of his dad on dialysis, so he can STFU for five minutes before a football game to acknowledge America's war on black folks.

He stfu.

It's bound to happen and keep happening wherever there are fans willing to risk COVID exposure to attend a football game. Missouri just happened to be the first.

Kamara and Dalvin Cook get extensions.

I'm always curious about this, when do these people think is an example of a year when there weren't politics in sports?

Also, what completely f*cking triggered snowflakes.
