Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

Both 3D World and Galaxy looked great in that direct. I remember finishing Galaxy back in the day, but I'm up for playing it again. I had a few fun days with 3D World, but I stopped playing because the WiiU was basically for the kids in our house and not in a comfortable space for me. I'm interested.

Abby Russell on Giant Bomb recently did a playthrough of Mario Galaxy, called "Mario Galaxy with Astronaut Abby."

Seriously, 3D World doubters, do NOT miss this amazing game. It's the best 2D Mario and the best 3D Mario ever made. What does that even mean? Buy it and find out! This game is pure joy!

I am up for 3D World, just not super excited right now because of the February release date. I'll warm back up to it then.

Considering how much Galaxy relies on the wii mote I am interested to see how well it works. It will give me a good indication of how well they can get Metroid prime, and LOZ: skyward sword to play

Metroid Prime did play pretty darn well on the GameCube. Though I’m a weirdo who actively prefers the lock-on-and-dodge gameplay to the traditional twin-stick controls.

On the Direct, they promote the multiplayer with of 3D world quite a bit. What is it like playing by yourself?

In some ways easier since you're not sharing extra lives. I played it with someone that hadn't touched a 3D Mario game since 64 and was over-confident in their abilities as a hardcore gamer. As such, when I tried to explain certain upcoming platform challenges that had been introduced to the series (those color blocks that appear and disappear based on timing or when you jump, for example), he'd just go off without listening and die a bunch.

They implement a lot of tools so that it still works out fine when playing with your family and children of varying skill levels, but the dynamic changes as well. It's more of a fun party game with friends/family, and closer to a skill-based obstacle course when solo.

BTW, I believe they added online MP to 3D World, which is cool.

Hopefully it actually works well. *cough* Smash *cough*

The cat suit has a bunch of different moves so it's super easy to, say, dive yourself off of platforms. Be aware of that if you haven't played platformer recently.

I am just interested in the Bowser expansion, since we did EVERYTHING o the WiiU version.. literally EVERYTHING.

Yes! We should revisit this closer to release, but 3D World is the perfect game to play with a young child, because of these multiple mechanics. Wonderful parent-child bonding opportunity.

The wiimote tracking was trash - remember how jittery the cursor was? The Joycons are way more accurate.

Do they work as well without a sensor bar? If so, what did the sensor bar do exactly?

Wait, it's all just an infrared beacon?

Always has been.

As I understand it, the Joycons use a combination of gyroscopes and compasses to determine orientation. The Wiimotes used much less sensitive gyroscopes and infrared tracking. The "sensor bar" was nothing more than two infrared lights that the Wiimote detected and used to orient itself.

Edit: Or what Agathos said.

Having played Mario Kart, Splatoon, and Smash with and without the USB Ethernet adapter, I honestly believe a lot of the issues for the netcode are resolved with a physical internet connection and Nintendo ought to just start including an ethernet port again.

I’m hopeful the next Switch dock has an Ethernet port.

I played 3D World through twice by myself and enjoyed it immensely. I didn’t at any point feel like it was lacking anything playing solo but I can definitely see how MP would work well. It is definitely one of my favorite Mario games. Tons of wonderful creative fun moments that made me smile.

I wish 3D World was out this month instead of Feb.

I preordered 3D All Stars as soon as I could.

So, this weekend I hooked up and played a bit of Mario 64 on the 64, and Sunshine and Galaxy on a Wii.

They are all still super fun!

Also, Galaxy still looks fairly decent, and Sunshine looks ok. Though they’re both a little blurry. But Mario 64 looks really rough on a modern tv. I’m really interested to see all 3 of those games with improved resolutions.

Also, I doubt Nintendo did this, but it’d be real nice to have either an improved camera or at least camera options. Sunshine’s camera controls were the opposite of what I’m used to, and felt super weird.

Edit: I forgot. In Sunshine, the cutscenes have a lot of voice acting. And it sounds really strange to me. Actually makes me appreciate how most Mario games now are mostly text boxes.

Counter-point: Mario games (and Zelda games and anything else played by 3-year-olds) should all have voice acting since their lack of reading skill in the modern versions of these games is far more limiting than being unable to read was in Super Mario 2, 2, 3, maybe Mario World as well.

I feel like Zelda is the game you play once you're old enough to read as it is. Nothing about it screams "Toddler" for me. But if Mario games did more pantomime like the original LEGO Star Wars it could work.

You know that there's a decent number of years between toddler and reading fluently, right?

Meh, I was playing Final Fantasy at 7, which is about the age I'd put for starting earlier 2D Zelda games. 3D ones are more sophisticated so I'd put that around age 10? My older niece was doing alright reading around age 8. I was maybe 10 when I started reading The Hobbit, though I imagine I was an outlier in terms of what I was reading.

Either way:

Zelda's not for toddlers. At least, that's my perspective on it, but, eh.

Omg, most adult games aren't for toddlers, regardless of reading or not. Their brains aren't developed enough to deal with movement on screen, much like they can't track a ball thrown to them until they're about four years old.

This is a silly discussion that's filled with little more than rancor.

"He's not the same person every time, sometimes it's a descendant and sometimes it's just some other kid, they exist on three different timelines, but Breath of the Wild is in all the timelines, why are you still not getting this, are you a toddler?"

Lolololol

Weird, none of you were or knew any 3-6 year-olds (badly) playing Zelda 1, 2, or A Link to the Past?

I agree about the reading. Some games my 4 year old likes to play or 'help' have a lot of reading in them and I have to routinely tell her what it says, including games that are toddler-friendly.
