Name a Band / Song We Should Know About

Zella Day was recommended to me recently.

Among her tracks I found what I would describe as a 2020 take on ABBA...which I'm completely into:

I enjoyed the less ABBA stuff too:

I thought y'all old timers might enjoy this Spotify playlist I put together as a soundtrack for the current Crew 2 "Flashy 80s" summit. It's 89 driving-related 80s songs. Lots of different genres. I confess that the connection some songs have to driving may seem tenuous, but I promise there is a connection of some sort in my twisted brain.

Cruising the 80s

Despite them being one of my favorite 80s bands, I restrained myself from putting all 21 of the Billboard Hot 100 songs by The Cars on the list.

Justin Townes Earle died a couple of days ago. He had a really unique voice and perspective, and some really great guitar chops. He had a pretty troubled background though and a lot of it pours into his songs, which makes some of his work particularly hard to listen to now. His Midnight At The Movies album is a clear standout for me and is probably a good starting point for someone wanting to check him out.

Swedish folk rock band Garmarna. This is super catchy.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to buy a couple albums. He was not on my radar, but I really like what I've now heard.

Oh crap! His father Steve Earle outlived him. Both father and son are great. This is a big loss.

I went ahead and bought digital versions of Single Mothers, Kids in the Street, Midnight at the Movies, and Harlem River Blues. Put them on my USB stick of music in the car. About to leave on a camping/fishing trip, so it'll be perfect to have a bunch of new music to listen to on the drive.

New Pomplamoose!

Bonus spaced out version of Supertramp’s Logical Song!

Does that have anything to do with LaCroix? And if I listen to it will it interfere with my psych meds?

Loved their Mr Blue Sky cover!

If only we could bottle Jack Conte's energy and all partake!

New album just dropped from Kelly Lee Owens.

Her first album on my AOTY list for 2017. This one seems to be similarly fabulous. If you like dreamy electronica with breathy female vocals, check it out!

Jack & Nataly will not cause you to consume furanocoumarins, but their music is deliciously tangy.

If finding surprisingly good ska covers of unlikely songs was a profession then I'd be gainfully employed.

Edited to add:

Me: "How about the Brazillian 1960s classic Black Orpheus? I bet there's no ska covers of that, or if there are they aren't very good, right?"

Skanansi, the god of ska covers:

The Weeknd - snowchild

I like the video more than the song itself.

So happy about the new release. The video is weird as always.

My favorite song is and probably alway will be "Bouquet Final".

My favorite Yelle music videos are the unofficial ones from Nathan Barnatt

Oh wow, they are awesome. And Julie Budet is actually in the second video. This made my day.

If you like those you might like his alter ego Keith Apicary doing the Neo Geo song

Does he really have a speech issue, or is that affected?

There is a YouTuber who I watch for his awesome audio recording tutorials. One of his eyes wanders all over the place. It took me a while to get use to it, but I’m glad I did. I’ve learned quite a bit from him.

People who are variant from the norm would almost never have gotten a platform on traditional TV twenty years ago. YouTube can be such a wonderful place, when it’s not being atrocious.

TBH that is the only video I remember of his other than his dancing ones so I wasn't sure what the answer was until I checked out some of his non-Keith videos today. He does seem to have a bit of a lisp but it's nowhere near as strong as when he's doing his Keith persona.

Please share!

Good ol’ Pete.

I picked this one up while watching the 2nd season of the Umbrella Academy:

That song reminded me of a great song from a travel-style mix tape a friend of mine whipped up for me over a decade ago that I had nearly forgotten, I'm happy to be reminded of it:

I only know of that band because of the soundtrack for Romeo + Juliet...which I like a lot....

New Aesop Rock

I’ve been craving some new Aesop. Thanks.

“I’m tired of bread, I might eat the rich.”
Clearly living in Portland is having an effect on Aes.

Why did nobody tell me that RJD2 released an album this year?

Everything Everything’s new album is out. I’ve shared the single Arch Enemy on here before and that is still my fav from this album. You may have also heard their older single Planets. Some of their other stuff mixes hints of Beck and Radiohead into their own sound.

Oh wow! I had forgotten that artist.
