iOS Games Thread Catch All

You must try What the Golf. It’s a game that’s full of humor and surprises. And there is quite a bit of content in there.

Subscription gaming would be a waste for me now—it’s hard enough to justify multiple subscription streaming services we use—but I would like to sometime try Butter Royale but it’s only available there still.

I can definitely understand that, the only gaming subscriptions I have are Humble Choice (I can pause that each month) and GeForce Now (only £5/$5 and I can play a load of good games on my ageing laptop). I most likely wont continue with the subscription for AA but a free month is a free month

I'll check out Butter Royale although from first glance I'm not sure it's my thing.

Thanks RawkGWJ, I recognise the title of What the Golf but don't know anything about it, I'll check it out

I will 2nd What the Golf?
It is an excellent game.

Assemble with Care!

Assemble with Care looks like a fun and short puzzler from the makers of Monument Valley, added to my list along with What the Golf. Thanks for the recommendations!

I really liked HoloVista:

It's a find-the-object type game with a strong narrative layer and pulls the trick of doing things in 360 degrees (and optionally through this kind of pseudo AR mode where you can swing your phone around to move your viewpoint, but I wouldn't recommend it).

Having a lot of fun with Genshin Impact. Its being compared to Breath of the Wild with co-op multiplayer that seems to be a “F2P game done right” with some reviews saying it’s setting a new bar for the F2P game genre. It’s also available on Android, PS4, Xbox One, and PC (apparently via a proprietary launcher).

The BotW comparisons got me to pick it up on PC earlier this week and while I’m enjoying it, I really don’t get the comparison at all. Beyond the free climbing and bright graphics there are very few points of convergence.

Interestingly with Genshin Impact, you can switch between playing on mobile phone and computer (and I assume xbox too), and keep your progress. PS4 not so much tho.

XCom 2 Collection is coming to iOS 05NOV20.

It's being done by Feral Interactive, so the port will be amazing (see their previous work with Tropico, Company of Heroes, Rome: Total War and so on).

I’ve been playing Call of Duty Mobile for the past few months and really enjoying it. The mobile game is really fun. The presentation is really cool. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and in a lot of ways is a parody of the bigger CoD games on the larger platforms.

They do the battle pass thing where you can do a small buy in and unlock skins and avatars and characters and other cosmetic stuff. You also can easily earn your original cash investment back, in the form of in game currency of course. But that means you will have enough simolians for the next season’s battle pass.

Well, right now CoD Mobile is doing a one year anniversary event and it’s BANANAS! Over the top sci-fi military ‘60s cold war theme. A doofy story with doofy characters to tie the theme together. Lots of loot to collect and unlock. Today is day one of this one year anniversary season.

I’m RawkGWJ in game as well as most other places. Come find me.

I basically don't play mobile games, but I do love events. You inspired me to take a look at the COD website, and it certainly seems like they're doing a lot for this event! Also, it seemed like COD Mobile was the only version of the games doing a Halloween event?

Also, this is definitely the wrong thread, but something has just occurred to me: Modern Warfare has a battlepass and sells skins, but in a game with annual releases, what's the point of buying a skin? Use it for less than a year and then move on to the next game?

CoD Mobile is definitely great. I recently deleted it after a few months of inactivity but always feel like I should give it more time. Their rendition of battle Royale is also one of the best I’ve played. I really didn’t like BR until I tried this one.

They’ve upped their game a bit in this most recent season. You might want to give it a second look.

Playing an FPS using touch controls sounds awful. Is it really not that bad to control?

It’s a bit funky. I remember having to spend extra time in bot matches to get a feel for things. I also did a ton of touch control customization, which the game offers in spades. After a month of playing I eventually landed on a scheme that is very close to the default config. What they really need is to to allow ADS + strafing on the left side of the screen, mapped onto a single button. I’d reinstall and log back in just to see if they’ve figured out that UI challenge by now.

A bit of a grey area is to pick up claw triggers from Amazon and slap those onto your phone. This will simulate playing with standard controller trigger and bumper layouts quite well depending on what you get. Yes I did get one for myself in the middle of my Cod Mobile obsession and found myself switching back and forth. Most attachments don’t allow for phone cases which can be a pain. And there’s still a weird feeling of input separation with these things since they introduce a mechanical interface in between you and the touch screen controls.

I actually love it. It takes a tiny bit of effort to acclimate to, but it’s as precise as a mouse and keyboard; maybe better.

Got a new iPad 8 to replace the Air 2 that has had a good long life but is on life support, and it comes now with a 3-month trial to Apple Arcade, so trying Butter Royale since I heard someone on the podcast a while back explain how silly and fun it is. Two questions:

1. Is there a GWJ squad I can key in on the JOIN SQUAD function?

2. I hate on-screen joysticks. Is it easy to pair something like my 8bitdo SN Pro+ to iOS?

Edit:

On your device, go to Settings > Accessibility > Switch Control > Switches > Bluetooth Devices… (you don't need to turn switch control “on”)

On your SN30 or SN30 Pro, hold Start + A to turn it on in MacOS mode

The controller will show up as “Wireless Controller”

Xbox and PS controllers can also connect to iOS through Bluetooth.

This game teaches you to play Bridge through a puzzle game approach. Once you’ve learnt it you can play Bridge against the AI with an AI partner.

Tricky Bridge

Hey, look at me! I’m learning Bridge!

Wow, I love that idea. I always wanted to learn, so here I go!
Thanks for the heads up.

Bridge is just Spades with a more complex bidding system. I haven't played since college, though. It's a good game!

Bridge is just "The Crew" for old people

EDIT: woops, thought this was the boardgame forum, not the mobile. but leaving this comment here anyways.

Great. Now I am going to have to check that out, too.

I'm reading the Agatha Christie mystery "Cards on the Table" where playing bridge is central to the plot... but I don't know how to play bridge.

So it's REALLY boring? I just finished my first game of The Crew on boardgame arena and really didn't like it. Is it a game that would be more fun in person and maybe just doesn't translate well digitally?

We should probably move this to the boardgame forum. I've only played it in person with family and we like it a lot. Certainly the first few "missions" if you are playing them in order are pretty simple, but as you move on I think it gets pretty interesting.

Yesterday I tried out Guardian Tales.

It's a pixel art action/adventure, sort of 2D Zelda style game. Each level has multiple collectibles to find with mini-puzzles hiding some of them. You can find maps that open up mini side levels on the main map. You control one character but have a (so far in my experience) second that follows you and contributes to battles.

It's gacha-style with all that entails but seems pretty F2P friendly so far. One nice difference about the stamina system is that you use it to unlock a level but don't have to spend any to repeat the stage to say, try to find collectibles you missed.

It's got a fun sense of humor. You can meet characters within levels who will then follow you on "Facebreak" and their posts with then appear in your Facebreak feed. The localization seems really well done, especially for a mobile game.

Not a mobile game, but The Crew card game mentioned upthread is on sale for $9.99 on Amazon. $5.00 savings.
