Welcome folks, and happy “760th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayn Jalut” week! This battle marked the first time the Mongols were prevented from expanding through conquest. The Mamluks employed the Mongols’ own tactic of feigning retreat with horse archers to draw the enemy into a trap. It was also the first recorded use of hand cannons on a battlefield, used by the Mamluks to scare people rather than as damage-dealers. You may all celebrate by playing a game where you cheese your way to victory by kiting.

As I drive past this week’s release list, I slow down, lower my sunglasses and nod. It’s an impressive week.

Desperados III has 3 bullets of DLC left; it loads one into the chamber this week. Money for the Vultures - Part 1: Late to the Party is an extra mission after the main game. This is the devs’ first crack at DLC—for their previous game, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, they decided to just get on with the sequel. Details of the new post-game mission are scarce, beyond a 30-second teaser trailer, but the “Part 1” in the title suggests that all 3 bits of DLC will link up, Voltron-style, to form a new “Money For the Vultures” chapter of adventures, with its own coherent story. If you like these RTS stealth games, Desperados III is among the best on offer. If the DLC is only three-quarters as good as the main game, it will be worth your while.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 is a remake of the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games from 1999 and 2000. Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 is widely regarded as the best skating game ever, and holds the second-highest game rating on Metacritic (98), for what that’s worth. There’s always a base level of background love and nostalgia for Tony Hawk, both the games and the man, helped along by the fact that he seems a genuinely nice guy. This is actually the 3rd attempt at remastering the Tony Hawk games; this time by the devs who used to port the older Tony Hawk games. The plan is to make everything 4K, and to keep as much of the old music as they can get the rights to, while also adding new songs. In a signature, self-effacing, Tony Hawk move, he and all the other skaters from the original games will be included, but at their current ages, along with a new roster of the current generation of skaters. As George Lucas might say, why bother with sequels when you can tinker with the original?

After a number of beta testing weekends, Marvel's Avengers is finally out. It’s Avengers in the Destiny format, warty microtransactions and all. Will it need as much polishing as Destiny did? It probably won’t matter for fans, who just want to be their favourite Avenger and pound on hordes of goons; such fanservice got me through roughly 3000 Lego Marvel games with the kids. By all accounts, the early-level combat is a bit samey, until you level up your heroes’ powers enough. Until then, you just have to wonder why level 1 Hulk takes 20 hits to destroy a robot the size of a trash can. Early-game niggles aside, this is a new bain-marie at the games-as-service buffet—the plan is for you to stick around and keep refilling your plate with midgame and endgame content; something none of the previewers can comment on. Many folks have said they’ll wait for new consoles or a PC upgrade (or Stadia to actually work) before trying this one, which makes me wonder what incentives Squenix will throw out to draw people in before 2021.

Crusader Kings III drives its longboats to shore and establishes a beachhead this week. Crusader Kings is Paradox’s dynasty simulator; the focus on families and rulers make it less daunting (for me) and more approachable than Paradox’s other, grand everything simulators. CK2 initially kicked off its medieval era from 1066, with DLCs that reached further back into the 800s. CK3 currently offers only 2 start dates: 867 and 1066. As such, CK3 looks like it incorporates the best of CK2 and its copious DLCs, as well as (like Paradox always says) improves the UI and tutorials to make it easier for beginners. I’ve had a lot of fun with Paradox games without ever feeling like I was any good at them. I played dozens of hours of CK2 despite never working out how to do a combat. I was so taken up with the soapish melodrama of courtly interactions, driven by everybody’s weird traits. It makes Crusader Kings one of the most entertaining games to fail in; at least you have a good story about how your humble Irish province was undone by poor marriage choices. Perhaps our glorious Game King will bless us with some Let’s Plays? GOTW.

Looks like I'll be taking Tuesday off.

Yall have fun in CK3. I'm awaiting a few patches and dlc before bothering.

CK3 Game Pass, buy Tony Hawk remaster, wait but probably give into the Avengers game as an impulse buy. This is gonna be a crazy week.

Hotshot Racing next week. I know this is for this week, but Hotshot Racing is next week. Can't wait.

Excellent banner art choice.

I will get Tony Hawk, but I might wait for the "rumored/leaked" Switch version.
My old thumbs already hurt.

Already bought it, played the tutorial and got a refund. It's awesome! I don't have time for it in my life.
