Control by Remedy Catch All

I played through the first 2 or 3 hours of the game last month and I don't see why everyone is raving about this game. It has a disjointed story and the controls are meh. I almost feel like I need to be high to properly enjoy the game, so maybe I am missing something. Is the first couple hours not as good as the rest or if I dislike the first part is it worth pushing through?

It gets weirder and harder. I also recommend quitting; you're unlikely to start enjoying it.

This is not a cover shooter. The sooner you get used to that the better off you will be.

Again adding my voice to the chorus. Some games embrace "play how you want." Control does not; most of the time it wants you to run, throw, run, shoot, run, repeat. In my experience, that's "run and gun" is just how Remedy likes to make games.

Note that I have not found it hard (at least not yet). It is the story and the way that is told that just seems odd, and not in a good way. What I don't get is where the love is coming from. I hear so many people love it, but to me it is like walking into a restaurant that makes pizza with fruit loops and asparagus on it and everyone says it is the a really good pizza. You then try it and it tastes as bad as it sounds. I feel like I am missing something, like maybe you need to add crushed peppers to the pizza and now it is good.

The traversal and combat eventually really meshed well and clicked with me and the environment and concept of the FBC in general is really fascinating. I could take or leave Jesse’s narrative thrust but it was just a world I liked to exist within.

Edit: I’m no game critic and I’m not a huge fan of Polygon but I like this explanation of why it was on their GOTY list: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.pol...

Control, instead, feels like a carefully prepared meal being fed to you methodically, until you develop a taste for it.

I guess they are using my metaphor too.

I guess so. I was immediately drawn into the game’s concept by the intro, like they say. Everything felt so underexplained and not-okay and the people you meet are mostly comfortable with it all, it was just very intriguing and unsettling. The worst parts of the game were those that began to feel a *little* rote and mundane, but thankfully they didn’t take long to jar me out of those with a new enemy type or OOP.

To extend that metaphor: Pineapple on pizza is, to most people, an abomination. But to me and my partner, add hot peppers with the pineapple, and it's amazing. BUT... some people still hate it. Taste is subjective.

Control is going for a creepy surreal unsettling vibe and the story is not a clear linear narrative where you understand everything that happens. Like the films of (say) David Lynch, some people will love this. But it's hard to blame somebody who doesn't. It's not easy to explain why people love it. Like drinking absinthe or furry porn, some people are just wired to like certain weird things.

As for the difficulty: have you hit the first boss battle yet? That'll give you an idea what you're in for difficulty-wise. If that matters. Because the story is not getting much clearer or less weird.

I loved Control from the menu screen, and my love for it only grew from there.

Yes.

YES.

Got to bad design point or a bug. When trying to get to a point multiple monsters are spawned. The problem I had is that they never stopped spawning. I looked for a monster spawner but couldn't find one. After failing to figure out what was going on I turned to the internet. Apparently I had to stand near the door to stop the monsters from respawning.

I think it might be a bug since none of the other groups of monster acted like this.

Game turned into a slide show in areas that previously ran perfectly.

Got it back to normal using a app called Intelligent Standby List Cleaner.

This is still a thing? That was a bug in the very early days of Windows 10, where the standby memory wouldn't get properly dumped, yet reared its ugly head again in Control when it came out. I thought it had been patched... but now I am seeing Google results that recent (this year) Windows updates somehow reintroduced the bug?! What in the blue heck?

First I heard of the problem but I'm not surprised considering all the problems windows 10 has been having.

On a different note I might have said it before but the map is almost useless. Lots of running around in circles.

Ok. That's a lot of clocks.

Title of my sex ta... oh. Sorry, misread.

Great. More clocks.

I played through the bulk of this with just max Launch, Seize, and some flight. Hit a difficulty curve as others have so bought a respec and put health to max. That's helped me a lot.

We all expected this, but here it is:

What took place in 2010 in Alan Wake is one of the cases that the Federal Bureau of Control has been investigating. The AWE expansion is the first official Remedy Connected Universe crossover event, bringing more Alan Wake lore into Control.

Yaaaassss!!

Gross. No one wants that.

Finished. Really enjoyed it. Was going to dive straight into the DLC but then I saw Horizon Zero Dawn was out on P.C.

Fought a a couple of boss battles. One I took a few tries. Main problem was falling into the holes he left behind after hitting the ground. Kind of baited him to strike where I wanted and then moved up a bit after each strike. That way the holes were always behind me So as long as I didn't dodge backwards there was little chance of falling.

The other boss was a giant plant monster that was really hard and really easy. After getting owned a few times I thought maybe it required the use of a new power. I tried levitate but that didn't work out for me. Then I tried shield which made the fight super easy. I didn't even have any points in shield. Basically he has a giant tell before attacking. I just stood on a stump and raised my shield when I seen the tell. He caused nearly no damage. After his attack I attacked his face. Rinse and repeat he goes down easy with me standing in one place the entire battle. Oddly this is the only time I have used shield not counting the test for it.

Something I just found out. You can get rid of board mission and have new missions replace them. So you can always have missions for the section you are in.

It amuses me that I know precisely which fight thanks to this description.

I can barely... Control my excitement about this announcement.

"first official Remedy Connected Universe..."

They've said this is the last DLC for Control, but this sounds like they have more planned. Hopefully another game in the same setting.

yeah i think future games, whatever they are, are all going to be connected to the RCU.

Which i am stupidly excited about because i love this dorky sh*t.

I am interested in the game on PC but can't find reviews on how it runs on PC yet. To those who got it on PC thoughts on how it is running?

Ran fine on my 2016-era rig (i7, GTX1070), thought I did have to pull some sliders down to maintain framerate.

I've heard it'll chug even a hefty modern rig when you turn ray tracing on.

That's good to know.

Thank you.
