GWJ bugs, feature requests, and updates

Are they really a problem or are we just making them into a problem?

I’m guilty of making a mountain out of a mole hill. With out the context for the “THIS” culture that existed pre-like implementation here, I can see how likes replaced something completely non productive with a mechanism that at least causes people to think about their witty one liners as opposed to a reductive thread of 15 people contributing four letters of “THIS”.

Appreciate the context!

The other fix for self-liking is just doing what reddit does - when a post is created, automatically contribute one like from the original poster, leaving them only the option of removing a like.

I largely agree that the "+1" and quoting someone else with "This" being the only addition to a post is mostly gone because of likes. If it goes away, we lose a simpler means of expressing agreement - and if a number of likes precludes you from adding to the discussion, then... I suppose, get over that, and make your contribution anyway? I don't think many of our discussions on these boards are exactly saturated with nuance.

Yeah, there are some out there, like people who repost popular things on reddit just to get their karma score up, who will get off on getting likes. If that's not actually creating problematic posts, though, I'm not sure where the problem is. We're video gamers - not-insignificant portion of playing video games is finding things that stroke our reward centers.

+1.

I like seeing that Like counter increasing on my posts, but do you know what I like even more? Seeing people quote or directly respond to my posts, with a well thought-out and carefully constructed response. Agreement, disagreement, alternative viewpoint, whatever - they're all good; I just like seeing a nice diversity in commentary.

The Like button removed a small portion of that, but it brought an ability for people to contribute in a different way that didn't exist before. It's worth keeping for that alone.

For the last while, I have noticed the GWJ Forums seem very laggy. (Only on this site). It takes a couple of seconds for a forum page to load. The buttons (post, preview) and hover menus don't work for a second or two after I go to use them.

Plus, posting in the Streamers with Jobs thread gives me an error that says:
"The website has encountered an error. Please try again later."

And if I try to PM Feegle, it gives an error as well.

Never mind got it!

While on my AT&T iPhone, every time I try to navigate to gamerswithjobs.com I get NSURLErrorDomain ("An SSL error has occurred...") in Firefox, and "Safari cannot open the page because the network connection was lost" in Safari - but only while in LTE. If I'm connected through wifi, it works fine. Other sites load fine in LTE.

This SO question mentions something about needing to support IPV6 on the web server.

Cannot reproduce. Works fine on AT&T iPhone 8 when connected to LTE in all three browsers (Safari, Chrome, and Firefox). May have been a temporary issue that has worked itself out since you posted.

It happens all the time for me, including right now. Maybe it's a geographic issue with Cloudflare?

I was getting weird TLS errors for awhile on this site, too, using desktop Firefox. I'm pretty sure it was a Cloudflare misconfiguration of some kind, as it eventually went away. (edit: it could have been a Firefox problem, too, I've gotten at least two patches since then.)

I see that GWJ has three IPv6 addresses, and seems to be working fine on all of them.

Alright, so due to an unexpected power outage at home, I’m testing this LTE issue out further. Some sites work, but not all.

Solution: open iPhone Settings, go to Cellular, Cellular Data Options, and then disable “Use LTE” (which dropped me to 4G). GWJ worked! Then I enabled LTE again, and GWJ still worked!

i guess I’ve been carrying a bad LTE connection around, even across multiple full phone reboots. And yeah, turning LTE off and then on again fixed it. Apologies for the false bug report.

Did Likes get removed? I still see them on mobile, but not on desktop (sometimes?).

Likes aren't visible if you're not logged in. Maybe you're getting an occasional login cookie issue?

Maybe. I see them now on my mac, using Firefox. Wasn't seeing them on Firefox in Windows, but was definitely logged in.

The site is really acting weird right now.... it'll be normal, and then will get very choppy and weird and not return data correctly. My first guess would be a memory leak, ending up with inadequate RAM, as this feels rather similar to that. Another possibility would be an overloaded virtual host, so that the GWJ guest isn't getting enough resources from the parent machine.

Another possibility would be ISP issues on my end, I suppose, but everything else seems to be okay.

I couldn't create a new post that had emoji characters in it. I just made this post: https://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/...
But my original version had the team emoji characters next to them that I pasted in from this list: https://blaseball.fandom.com/wiki/Le...
The weird thing is that the preview functionality worked just fine and the emoji showed up in the preview just fine. But when I went to post, I got an internal server error of some kind. "The website encountered an unexpected error. Please try again later." Happened several times.

I just tested with a regular form post and got the same issue, so it's not just starting new topics.

Thanks, you're doing great!

Dark mode please. Can't be doing with all this whitespace.

I keep thinking about this, too. Thanks for the reminder, let me find out.

This is the only place on the internet without a dark mode.

It's been dark for me all year.

Chrome dark mode extension

Holy moly that extension is fantastic. Many thanks!

It's great except for the fact that you have to configure it separately for every site. I want an extension that automatically remembers on a per-site basis.

Or just add a dark mode to GWJ, because pretty much every other site I visit has it.

D&D Forum.

D&D Forum.

Oh, no. If there's a whitest part of the site, it's D&D.

The site is so old this would require going into the code and changing hex codes for all the elements, I suspect. Which would be a permanent change.

I would like to do this regardless, my only concern would be if it negatively impacts that chrome extension in any way.

"adding a dark mode" as a toggle or whatever would require custom building that functionality into a thing (if that's even possible with this framework? Idk) that was made before that concept existed, I think

Also! Some bug updates happening tonight around 8pm PST. Pray for *Legion*

Once Twitter had an actual dark mode I just had to turn that extension off for that site. No big deal.

The natural dark mode Twitter has works better. The plug-in had issues with images posted and they were whited out so you couldn't see the preview without clicking. Maybe a couple other issues. But better than nothing.

And the Chrome mobile browser has had dark mode in it for months too. Seems to work fine with this site. Settings > Themes > Dark mode.

Maybe if the NFL season is cancelled he'll have more time to work on the site.

Look, if Legion (or anyone) would like to help with the site as an act of mercy or good will, pm me and we'll see what we can do!

I'd be so grateful for the hand!* Doogiemac is someone whose day-job workload intensified quite a bit due to pandemic changes, so things happen when we can schedule a time, meet, plan, rollout. Another set of hands may be useful! Site is Drupal.

*I did not confer with Doogiemac or Certis before asking this. Forgive me if this request goes sideways.
