Welcome folks, and happy “68th Anniversary of the first use of the word ‘fallout’ in the nuclear sense” week! The New York Times used it in 1952, and then a term coined in the 1950s went on to become the title of a beloved game series inspired by the sci-fi of the 1950s. You may all celebrate by dusting off and playing your old copy of It Came from the Desert.

Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time is based on the cartoon series, which ended in 2017. The art style blew my mind when I watched it with my onepapers. Most previewers are saying the game is reminiscent of classic PS2-era, 3D hack’n’slashers. It’s meant as a compliment, but could equally be a criticism. The show’s writer and voice cast are on board, and that makes this render of an already-beloved world harder to judge objectively; nostalgia oils many a rusty hinge. I’ll take the usual cop-out and say it looks like a fun one to enjoy with school-aged kids.

Speaking of games to play with older kids, the remake of Battletoads is out this week on PC and Xbox. The 2D, hand-drawn animation gives it a “1990s Disney” look. The demo made a good impression way back at E3 2019, and now it’s here.

It’s not a bad week for games based on TV shows. Peaky Blinders: Mastermind is based on the hit British gangster series, served up as an isometric, stealth-action game, similar to Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. It won’t offer as much freedom and variety of solutions, though—I suspect it’s about finding the one correct path through each level.

Remnant: From the Ashes is the 3rd-person shooter Souls-like that you haven’t tried yet because you’ve been distracted by shinier games. This week, it gets its second, and final, expansion: Subject 2923. This is much bigger than the previous Swamps of Corsus DLC. There’s a new frozen, snowy biome, plus more of the usual new stuff that expansions bring: loot, lore, levels, abilities, bosses, and critters. Also, this is the game that proc-gens a biome each time you start or reroll a campaign. The new Adventure Mode will now let you reroll the main game’s biomes without having to finish the main campaign. This could be worth a look if you’re into SoulsBornes and between games at the moment.

Pathfinder: Kingmaker Definitive Edition, designed by Chris Avellone, comes to consoles this week. When it came out on PC in 2018, it was praised for being a faithful rendition of the ruleset and world of Pathfinder (the Civ 3 of D&D), offering all the complexity and versatility in building your characters. The Kingmaker campaign is based on Pathfinder’s most famous campaign series, which involves characters eventually building their own kingdoms in the Stolen Lands (and there’s nothing colonial about that!), with all the town-building and other systems that entails. This game is pitched at pleasing Pathfinder experts—noobs like me will likely balk at the literally thousands of early character choices, unless we have the wiki or gamefaq at the ready. Plus, many quests are time-limited. No pressure! To make it playable on consoles, combat is fully turn-based. There’s easily 200 hours in here, if you dig what it’s putting down.

I’m really not sure what to pick this week. Each of the above games ticks one of my boxes and could get a single-shoulder shrug of a GOTW vote. I’ll give it to Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time because it gives me a chance to use a cool header image.

Comments

Game of the Week for me is Microsoft Flight Simulator. From a small upstart company and franchise that hasn’t been around for that long

Phoenotopia: Awakening calls to me. Previews make it seem pretty interesting.

The art style blew my mind when I watched it with my onepapers.
