Xbox One Catch-all

Wait, no Halo at launch? WOAH.

I saw it and had the same response...until I saw college football is getting blown up today and a major political party announced its vice presidential nominee as well.

Well played, Microsoft.

I have only played Halo 1, 2, and part of Reach; this doesn't affect me at all, except that it increases the chance I'll actually catch up on Halo and play Infinite.

I’m actually glad they’re giving the team more time, I don’t think it was ready yet. They at least need to get RTX implemented. Any word on price yet?

Infinite delayed until 2021.

I don't see preorders anywhere yet.

Do you have a source for the 20th as the release date? All I can find is them saying November 2020.

Apparently I do not. Apologies.

I must have read it as November 2020 (huh?) or it was an early report that has since been cleaned up.

Well Thanksgiving is on the 26th this year, so I think they'll will try their best to get it on shelves before then. I would guess the Monday/Tuesday before at the latest, so the 24th.

Rumor is Nov 6th.

This doesn't affect me at all either, I played through every campaign and enjoyed the collection of multiplayer modes in the MCC. I'll be playing Cyberpunk in November, which got delayed quite a bit as well. If the game's not ready, I'm certainly glad they're keeping it in the oven longer!

All that said, Halo Infinite was The Big Reason for most people to pick up a Series X this year and now it's not happening. My opinion is that if Game Pass/backwards compatibility sold systems as much as we think around here everyone would own an Xbox One X or S already (if they don't just game on PC), so it'll be interesting to see what MS does now to move these things in 2020!

I bet the Series X co-launches with Cyberpunk 2077 on or around 11/19, maybe even with the game packed-in.

Given the number of times that CP2077 has been namechecked or called out by Microsoft marketing organs, I think that Microsoft is looking at Cyberpunk as the real showcase launch title for the Series X.

Microsoft's marketing argument for the launch window is going to be that third party games look and run better on the Series X, just like they did on the 360. I'd be willing to bet that Microsoft has been dropping a ton of engineering resources in to CD Project Red to make it so.

The cost of a Game Pass sub.

If there's anything Microsoft has taught me, it's that they'd rather have my subscription dollars than a purchase price, and I'm totally okay with that.

Game Pass isn't about selling systems.. selling systems doesn't make money in the grand scheme of things.. selling subscriptions does. That's why Microsoft is the #2 company in the world and Sony isn't. Hell even Sony gets that given how much money they make off Digital Purchases and Addons.. its why Sony has been so reluctant to let anyone into their walled garden and in some cases has even restricted things even more.

I don’t understand this. It’s not going to be free with a sub. Microsoft may make a Game Pass sub more attractive if you purchase an Xbox, it there’s no way they’ll fully subsidize the price of this console.

I understood the question to be about Halo Infinite, which will be available for Game Pass subscribers on day one.

I want specifics from Microsoft but the Access program where you get the Series X + GamePass Ultimate for a monthly gets very close to the definition of "subscription" instead of buying hardware.

I'm still thinking I will do this program instead of paying out $500 (or whatever). Just like my Google Fi plan.

Got it. Thought the question was about the console.

I thought about this last year. I considered getting a XBox One S and then taking the 12 month upgrade to the Series X. Ultimately I decided against it. My recollection is that when I ran the numbers it did cost slightly more money than just buying the console on sale.

If I was still rolling with a One S, odds are I would jump at the Series X much sooner. With a One X, I feel like one advantages is in time. It's worth watching the landscape for awhile. Maybe a Series S makes sense in 6 months, and then jumping to whatever the Series X will upgrade to. Maybe there are some issues that need to get worked out. Maybe a great sale will happen.

Just like phones now. Buy a phone when the one you have lacks something you want that a new phone can do, even if that is just power.

But my subscription means I get a some of the benefits of next gen without buying a console. The pressure Microsoft is putting on publishers to make software updates for enhanced hardware free is a good thing. It makes deciding when to upgrade less of a hassle.

There's a Digital Foundry piece up about the Series X chip. I thought this bit was the most striking, "The importance of the processor's cloud support can't be understated: the chip can run and stream next-gen games, obviously, but it can also virtualise four Xbox One S instances simultaneously."

To me, it speaks to just how much more CPU compute power is going to be available in the next gen, and how painfully underpowered the last gen was in that regard.

Digital Foundry has pointed out in the past how terribly underpowered current gen CPUs are and how that is one of the main reasons framerate has proven to be a lot harder this generation than high resolution. The Xbone X has a Geforce 1070 level GPU and a CPU that is far worse than my old laptop from 2011.

Xbox Series X Silicon Breakdown:

I don't think I NEED a Series X to enjoy games this winter.

But I sure do want one.

I think that best represents what Microsoft wants to offer right now.

This still the main thread for Xbox?

Xbox Series X|S Catch-All

Seems like it's time for one.

Microsoft clearly wants us to think of them as just different levels of the same thing (for the next couple years at least) so I almost feel like we need a thread that is more generic like Xbox (insert some random characters here to make it clear it's not the original) Catch-All

Nah, I think this works.

Xbox One was the mistake. They rebooted it by creating two consoles, introducing the S with some advanced features, and the X with a lot more power.

Seems Like Series S and Series X are the lines. They may even upgrade and change things, but just give them a (Late 2022) or (Spring 2023) to designation just to differentiate it when buying used, like with Apple stuff. Otherwise, buying new, you generally get what will be the current model.

Instead of waiting a few years to provide the budget version, they are just going to have one at all times. And they are going to have a premium one at all times. Each will serve different needs, and can be adapted to how they are used.

I don't think it's ever going to be more complicated than X = premium and S = budget.
