Hidden Gems of Netflix's Watch Instantly

Watched the first 4 episodes of Cursed and liking it so far. Story telling isn't the greatest but I'm just running with it. You know it kinds of reminds of The Witcher on the way they are telling the story but they aren't doing as good of job. Or maybe it will come together later on it. Right now they have plots that are interesting but don't seem to be connected. For example there is a part about a girl getting married in order to hide from bad people. Nice that she is alive and well but so far it serves no purpose to the plot. Again maybe she will be important down the road.

Acting is good. Creepy girl was very creepy. Main actress is good. Floki is good as merlin and I guess this is the reason he isn't on Vikings. Also like Arthur.

One interesting thing is a barmaid. I can't tell if her face is cgi or not.

Keep watching and you'll find out

I really struggled with the early episodes, it felt poorly written and over acted like a kids show from the 80's. It did pick up though later on, Merlin, Arthur and the weeping knight were very good characters.

I finished Transformers: War for Cybertron: Siege, and had a blast. I love the chunky character design and the textures, all scratched, faded, and battle damaged. I don't get why they have to talk with so many pauses in their sentences, but other than that, I enjoyed it very much. I can't wait for the next chapter in the trilogy, whenever it comes out.

Also, I would love an animated version of the More Than Meets the Eye/Lost Light comic series by James Roberts, but I doubt that's going to happen any time soon...

Thanks for this reco. It reminds me of the Cybertron game trilogy.

That's exactly why it caught my eye. I love War for Cybertron and adore Fall of Cybertron, and this show has pretty much the same look.

Loving Umbrella Academy season 2.

I like it when Netflix goes for these oddball shows that would never have made it on real tv.

Yeah only on ep 3 of the new Umbrella Academy but damn I forgot how good this show is.

New season of Last Chance U just dropped. So far it's a breath of fresh air. The coaches seem like they're not all assholes, the players want to get scholarships, not necessarily NFL contracts, and it's overall just a much better atmosphere than anything out of East Mississippi or Independence.

edit: It may be a touch less dramatic than previous seasons. At Indy and EMCC, the narrative always seemed to turn into coaches vs. players. I don't think you have that dynamic here.

So because it's about people trapped in apartments and therefore has a pandemic vibe, I looked to see if the other language versions of The Circle were available now, and in Aus the answer is yes. So I started watching The Circle France.

I remembered hating all the players in the beginning in the US version, but then a few of them grew on me. In this one they seemed to have stuffed too many douchebags in there, there's only one that I can root for at all. Oh well.

I wonder if filming of new seasons is or will continue. The apartment block is in Russia I think, travel would be tough but it's the reality show of its typle that would need the least adaptation to be distance-friendly, I would think.

Edit: ok more circle thoughts.

Way more attention on liking everyone's status updates in this one, everyone is expected to like each status it seems, and they instantly check to see who hasn't.

And also it has turned a lot meaner, and I feel like we are getting to know the players a bit less.

All this could be a result of the editing, though.

I've learned that lol in French is mdr, young people use Arabic words sometimes, and most of them say "ooh luh luh" a fair bit which doesn't get translated in the subs. And they make a lot of exclamations in English.

Some spoilered thoughts for the superinfluencer episode

Spoiler:

I think Romaine made a tactical error by blocking Ines, because if he had gone with Nelia he would have outed a catfish who would take the brunt of the haterade and made it less clear who did it (though the others had the wrong idea about it anyway). Though I guess Ines may have been more successful at galvanising non-teamwinner.

Ofc Romaine didn't have the knowledge about the twins, but he did say he had no doubts about Ines and we know he didn't trust Nelia.

Gotta give a shout out to The Witch: Subversion. Fantastic movie that goes into a direction that you absolutely did not expect. Fantastic cast, fantastic fx and terrific script. A+, would watch again.

Finished catching up on the first four seasons of The Magicians. I really adore this show, despite some of its flaws. I'm kind of hoping they put the final season on Netflix earlier than normal, but I'm not holding my breath.

I enjoyed Double World last night.
I am also enjoying Sirius the Jaeger so far.

I watched Sirius the Jaeger a couple of months ago and really enjoyed it.

Dark S01E07

Spoiler:

So the first time I watched this I completely missed the Helge connection even though this is one of the times the show just beats you over the head with it. Completely missed the thing with his ear. At this point we don't know why his ear is messed up only that child Helge wakes up in the testing/torture chamber with the side of his head bloody.

Another thing I missed that I picked up this time was candy clue. We see Helge eating one. So a few episodes back a girl finds a candy wrapper that was from a candy that is no longer being made. The idea is that Helge dropped the wrapper in current time when he was dropping off the dead body of one of kids. Apparently he is getting rid of dead kids by sending them to the future via the time cave.

Dark S01E08

Spoiler:

Ulrich goes back in time to 1953 where he tries to kill Helge who is a little boy. Ulrich bashes his head with a rock and then dumps his body in the torture/testing room. But as we see in episode 7 he failed. Even if he had killed Helge this wouldn't have saved his son because Helge didn't kill his son. Also the other deaths would have still happen because Helge is just grunt, Noah is the one pulling the strings.

They added a bunch of new characters or a bunch of old characters at different ages. Most of this episodes takes place in 1953 Ulrich running around trying to find Helge to kill him. One character is Agnes, Tronte’s mom who we also meet as a teen, is introduce as single mom wearing this red dress that I think is suppose to scream high class. And I just seen a huge ass spoiler looking up her name. Oh well. Anyway there is a interesting scene with her and young Egon's wife. Agnes is renting a room for her and her son in Egon's house. Egon's wife helps her make the beds and during this their hands touch. Agnes looks like she doesn't notice the touch at all but Egon's wife looks like she just got touched by someone she is head over heels for and can't deal with it. Agnes doesn't notice her reaction. So I guess Egon's wife is gay. They are doing the country girl is all hot for the big city woman.

Oh I just remembered something. Two boys are found dead in 1953. They are clearly from the future based on their clothes. Also it is clear that Helge from the current time dumped them there because in episode 7 Ulrich mom told him he seen a man with a messed up ear in 1953 and seen him again in the current time but he hadn't aged in 33 years. So Helge is leaving bodies in the past, present, and future. He is leaving them in whatever time they didn't come from.

Another character that was introduce was Helge's mom in 1953. The interesting thing about her is she has dominate stance about her. Everything has to be perfect. She looks upset all the time. She is also kind of hot. I think her purpose to story was to show that Helge didn't have the best life growing up having to deal with mommy dearest. I also hate wire hangers. If you get that reference you are old. One funny thing is she outs Egon, the young cop, in his place for no real reason. He just came over to inquire about his missing dog or rather his daughter's missing dog. Helge actually tossed a stick into the time cave causing the dog to run after it. The dog never came out so it is probably in a different time now.

Oh another thing to note is that kid Helge in 1953 is being tormented by older kids. They take his money and pee on him. Hmmm I wonder if Ulrich actually drove Helge to Noah. With all the bad stuff happening to him and then getting his head bashed in maybe put him in a place where Noah could get to him.

A couple of interesting things happen with the clock maker. One is that Ulrich comes to see him and ends up leaving his coat in his shop. The clock maker finds Ulrich cell phone and is shocked to see since there is nothing like that in 1953. I wonder if that cellphone is what allowed him to create the time machine. Then in the current time the stranger brings the clock maker the time machine so he can fix it. The clock maker claims he doesn't know anything about the time machine but later on he pulls out the same time machine that he has been working on so now there are two time machines in the same place.

During the episode a statement is made about demons or the devil. The scene then switches over to Noah which I take as the show hitting us over the head that he is the bad guy in the series. Also in the beginning of the show there is a quote that goes something like "Hell is empty because all the demons are here".

Spoiler:

"What are wire hangers doing in this closet when I told you no wire hangers EVER!!"

I honestly have to take my hat off to the show's writers for how they set up and revealed things.

Rewatching this episode--especially Tannhaus's conversation with The Stranger--made me realize how clearly the writers spelled out what they were doing as well as what a devilishly good job they did of feeding viewers clues and reveals that progressed the story.

I watched and enjoyed this short 40m 1 part documentary "The Speed Cubers" which is about competitive Rubix cube solving. It was interesting to see how the people solve the cubes so quickly. It also had a nice feelgood component with the relationship of the 2 main people they followed.

I enjoyed it too.
The fact that one kid one 7x7, 6x6, 5x5, 4x4 and one handed... Cripes, that is insane!

I accidentally watched The Sinner S3 without seeing the first 2 seasons (Netflix reversed the series order for some reason).

I was a bit worried half way through when it dove into Ubermensch territory, but it pulled it together for a strong ending. Going in blind I was pleasantly surprised.

This is a very well done series. I'm actually only through the first 3 episodes of season 3 because there is some issue with the streaming episodes where I can only get the first three via OnDemand or the USA App. But it was looking to be a good entry.

The first season is pretty great, but I had a weirder problem than going in blind. I went in thinking it was actually a possession and exorcist story. And if you if watch it, it seems plausible for half the season. There is not supernatural elements to the series.

Second season has Carrie Coon, who is really great in it.

I'm watching S1 Sinner at the moment, it's great! I can see how you might think there is some kind of possession involved - it's much more mysterious than S3 was.

I've been watching episodes of Midnight Diner while on the exercise bike lately, and the more I watch it, the more I love it. I love the little slice of life stories, the sometimes weird characters, the super slow pace... It's low budget, but that's totally OK, it really doesn't need it. It's quickly becoming my comfort food TV.

Great show.

Edit: In case you didn't notice, there are sort of two separate shows which are basically the same thing. Midnight Diner is the first few seasons and Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories has the last couple seasons.

I did notice! I think the Tokyo Stories are the ones produced by Netflix, and the non-Tokyo Stories were made for Japanese TV.

Also, I finally managed to find a good version of the theme song to listen on my phone today, yay!

There are certain Japanese shows that are very slow and meant for unwinding at the end of the day like that. Mushishi is anime but has a similar vibe. If you like the theme song and intro to Midnight Diner, you should check out Mushishi. (You may have already watched it.)

Watched the series, watched the movie, read the manga

Midnight Diner is actually an adaptation of a manga as well, now that I think about it. I don’t know if it’s available in English though. I’ve read the first two volumes in French, and liked them quite a bit!

Interesting!

No matter what other trash I've been watching on Netflix, an episode of Midnight Diner before going to bed sets me up for a good night's sleep
