The GWJ JRPG Club Version 2.5 HD Remaster: Announcing our Q2 2024 Game!

Any thoughts on PS4 version vs PC version?

I only have the VITA VERSION so that will be it

PC version is 30% off on Steam, PS4 version is not

Sooooo stoked that Cold Steel 2 won! I swear I keep putting off some RPG's in hopes that they make it in this club hehehe. How long ago was it that we did the first in the series? A year? Two? So awesome hehehe

It was Q2 2019, if I remember correctly, back when it was still OK to go to the restaurant

So PC version works fine with the control scheme an all? For whatever reason, I feel like I should play JRPGs on the Playstation if I have the choice.

If you have a controller, it should work fine, and the button layout should be the same.

Well, the only Trails game I have finished is Trails in the Sky FC. So I’m going to do the logical thing and replay that one. I’ll let you know what I think of Cold Steel 2 in 2030.

PSA... I guess all or most of you know this but anyway just in case .I just started ToCS 2 on the PSVITA and the game comes with a summary of the 1st one.. so YAY!

I'm playing on Vita and already wishing I had the turbo feature

Battles are a little bit slow. Even when skipping animations, they tend to drag on for a bit. At least it's portable...!

Ouch, I'm using Turbo a lot just to get around some of the larger areas. I tend to turn it off during battles but that will probably change later on.

I used the turbo feature all the time!

So jealous!

To be honest, if a game requires a turbo feature in the first place, I think something's gone wrong with the design. I like these games a lot, but adding a fast-forward in later releases shouldn't have been necessary. It's appreciated, but I don't know if there should be a need for it in the first place.

Now this may be different with, say, early PSX RPGs where some of the slowness was due to limited hardware, but I'm sure things could have been sped up a bit on the Vita release.

I am also on Vita, so no turbo for me

I use Turbo a lot during battles. The animations feel just slightly too slow, it would have been nice if they had been sped up by about 50%, it would make the battles feel smoother and flow better. Now for general movement the movement speed is fine, but if you are just running through an area, the turbo is really nice. I find it really hard to hit enemies on the map with turbo mode on.

Thread for Trails of Cold Steel II is now up! I will update the OP of this thread later today/this week.

I see that there is a CRPG club, but no SRPG club...do srpgs just fall under jrpg? I'd love a srpg group to help encourage me to push through the beginning slow hours of non Square Enix/Fire Emblem Srpgs.

Depends on the SRPG. We did play through Tactics Ogre a few quarters back and I think Disgaea may have been brought up at some point. So there is a possibility we would play an SRPG.

As Malkroth said, the term JRPG can include games like Tactics Ogre and Disgaea, we do not discriminate here. Nobody has nominated any Fire Emblem game yet, but I don't think there'd be any opposition to it.

Interesting that Fire emblem hasn't been nominated yet. I nominated Tactics Ogre, but then couldn't get my hands on a device to play it in time. Maybe I'll nominate some for the next season/quarter.

I'd be happy to play some (J)SRPGs. I was thinking of Arc the Lad the other day. I only ever played Twilight of the Spirits but would love to try the rest of the series.

The first two were so good, the third one not as much, but still pretty good.

I played a bunch of Disgaea back on the PS2, but never finished it due to getting stuck in the endless loop of the item world. Been wanting to jump back into the series and 5 is out on basically everything these days. To be honest, I am not sure how many (J)SRPGs are around anymore. Big names like Ogre Battle died off in the early 2000s and I am not too familiar with the rest except Fire Emblem and Disgaea.

That's the fun of having a club. They all seem to be handled by indie devs now in the race to replace Final Fantasy Tactics. We would truly have to search for these in the deep well of hidden indie games.

Congrats, Malkroth, for finishing Bravely Second: End Layer! I've leveled you up.

And Bravery Second in the can!

Hello everyone!

With the end of Trails of Cold Steel II in sight (kinda), I think it’s time for me to take a break from video games and other electronic distractions. I’ve been thinking about this for a while and, now that I have completed most of the games I had started, I think this is a good time to do a digital detox and get back to focusing on personal projects and personal growth (not to mention getting rid of my man boobs and some accumulated belly fat).

This means that I will no longer be co-overlord of the GWJ JRPG Club. LastSurprise will be taking over completely, and I am confident he will continue to do an amazing job at keeping the club alive and kicking!

Hosting the game club has been a pleasure, and I want to thank all of the participants who joined LastSurprise and myself through good and not-so-good experiences, and for sharing your thoughts! Special thanks to LastSurprise, it’s been pleasure working with you!

Thanks for everything! If you have some time maybe you could post:
