Your Favorite Enemy

Pardon if this has been done before but what is your favorite in-game enemy, and I don't mean just best to beat. I mean what is your funniest, most obscure, most meaningful, most down-to-earth, most pathetic, most bombastic, most whatever.

I ask this because I just ran into some ghost crabs in Grim Dawn, and I thought "how ridiculous."

Michael Mando's Vaas is almost certainly my standout. It's to the point that I'm not sure that franchise exists today if they hadn't struck super lucky and picked that guy up to voice act.

Handsome Jack is often a popular one. Pretty much any middle-management demon in Afterparty. The witches in L4D2.

Most ridiculous enemy for me was the big bad from Legend of Grimrock. What kind of boss for should we face at the end of a real-time grid-based dungeon crawler?

Spoiler:

A giant metal cube that tries to roll over you, naturally. I guess that’s one enemy where it makes sense it can only move in 90 degree angles. [shakes head]

Favorite enemy is SHODAN. “Welcome to my death machine, interloper!”

Magus from Chrono Trigger is what comes to mind. The build-up, the difficulty of the fight compared to the rest of the game, his dungeon, his music, his ultimate role in the story, the big surprise toward the end... he’s untouchable.

Nazis. I love killing Nazis.

Certis in Joint Ops. MP shooter we played years ago. Id kill him as a sniper, hear him say dammit Spy, I'd giggle hysterically and he'd kill me 90 seconds later and that would get repeated several times in the course of an evening.

I think Glados is up there.

The Illusive Man. Failing that, a "Mig-28:"

Neck-and-neck with Shodan, in my opinion. Opposite sides of the same coin.

The Wither in Minecraft.
That boss has so much Chaos potential in Vanilla. It's a game-wrecker if you don't know what to expect.
An errant explosion can turn an easy fight you've definitely prepared for into an absolute nightmare. I have walked away from worlds where a Wither fight went wrong and I didn't feel like cheating.

And then you play modded and realize that to reach the mid-game you need to murder an astonishingly large number of Withers and golly gee, here's a box that murders Withers as quick as you can spawn them! So effing satisfying.

Gumbie, Psych, MyBrainHz, and ukick in TF2. The most aggravating enemies ever. So satisfying to kill in return.

Tie between two unassuming yet very dangerous foes.

Guaranteed 1k damage at least with 1000 Needles attack. They usually have higher XP, AP, or items than normal. Super cute and with the same basic animation for entire generations of consoles. I give you the Cactuar.

Tussling with this guy is courting death. He wields a simple kitchen utensil with maximum effectiveness. Tougher than you'd expect for his size, this adorable opponent tends to need only one strike to end most fights. I give you the Tonberry.

Doink!

Anyone who melee kills me in a Battlefield game

I'd have to go with LeChuck.

LeWho?

Jon Irenicus

That dude with the Mohawk from Far Cry 3 should probably be on the list of most pathetic, if only because he couldn’t even last to the end of the second act.

Also Joel from The Last Of Us, since everyone seems to agree that he was the villain of the story.

Skizzo from Days Gone deserves a mention for being someone who is possibly the most believable villain I’ve ever faced. His motivations are completely understandable, and he’s not really evil so much as he is self-interested and kind of a jerk.

That damn flagship at the end of FTL

My son. When he defeats me in a game I take pride that he is developing and progressing. When I defeat him, I'm happy that the old man still has it. It's a win-win.

The witch in Left for Dead, Saren in Mass Effect, Arthas in Warcraft, Mannimarco in Elder Scrolls. Echo everyone’s sentiments in Handsome Jack being terrific.

Would an inanimate force of nature count as an enemy? The final storm in Frostpunk was one of the most memorable strategy enemies I’ve faced.

I almost forgot:

Mr. Resetti in Animal Crossing.

Pierre, the Mime King from No One Lives Forever - the tricycle fight was hilarious back in the day.
The battle against Isako the Ninja in the trailer park was pretty amazing too.

The bulls from the Serious Sam series. Love playing a matador (with huge cannonballs) with them.

Imps in the original doom games. Shotgun them to the face every time.

Who can forget The Great Mighty Poo from Conker's Bad Fur Day?

Very good pull, but I actually prefer defeating and subsequently messing with Murray, the Demonic Talking Skull! Muuuaaahahahahahaaaaa! Click click click.

Since we've got a theme going, seeing Grim Fandango's Domino get his just desserts was pretty great as well.

I think about the cube minions often.

SHODAN:
Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?

My favorite enemy is Karras, head of the Mechanists from Thief 2. His nauseating condescension annoyed me to no end. In the Netflix movie I want him to be portrayed by Patton Oswalt.

She is certainly one of the greatest video game villains ever created. I'd say another one is Handsome Jack from the Borderlands franchise.

One of my personal favorites:

Course these are all boss, story defining enemies. They are easy to pick out. I'll have to put some thought into mob enemies...

Cube Minions
Every so often I have to remind myself that this part of the game is real and I didn't just dream it.

The minions overall in NOLF are awesome. They're clearly diabolical, but they're regular guy diabolical. Those moments when you overhear some of their conversations are some of the best comedy writing in gaming.

"....over!"

Ridley!
