Welcome folks, and happy “Bastille Day” week! You may all celebrate by playing a game where you start by breaking out of a prison.

SUPERHOT MIND CONTROL DELETE is a sequel/expansion to SUPERHOT and free if you bought the original. It offers more of the same, mind-bending, “time moves when you do” combat, but with different enemy types and a sprinkle of roguelike elements.

Beyond a Steel Sky is a sequel to cult classic Beneath a Steel Sky, which was a point-n-click adventure game from 1994. The original was set in a cyberpunk Australia and co-created by Dave Gibbons of Watchmen comics fame. Back then, they were aiming for a middle ground between the earnestness of Sierra games and the slapstick of LucasArts games. This sequel has been a long time coming, as the Kickstarter for it happened in 2012. Inventory puzzles are replaced by hacking puzzles, but as with most adventure games, your mileage will vary depending on whether you get into the story and characters.

Ghost of Tsushima is an open-world, samurai game from Sucker Punch, the devs of the Infamous games (which I liked). It’s set in 1274, during the first Mongol invasion of Japan and looks absolutely stunning; as good as anything I’ve seen on the PS4. Sucker Punch has talked a lot about its effort to build historical authenticity into the game, and I love that kind of talk. Besides exploration, the gameplay is a combination of third-person combat and stealth. Combat is designed to match classic samurai movies, focused on well-timed, devastating strikes rather than a constant flurry of activity. There is even a Kurosawa mode that will render your scenes in black and white, with film grain and extra wind to get the Kurosawa movie feel. Maybe I want to play all my games in Kurosawa mode. This game looks like a gorgeous place to lose oneself in for many an hour. For super immersion, go for Japanese dialogue with subtitles. GOTW.

On Switch, the big-ticket item is Paper Mario: The Origami King. It’s the 6th Paper Mario game, and it’s taking Paper Mario open world. They’ve also changed the combat, using a system based on lining up enemies in concentric rings that needs to be seen to be understood. This may not be the Mario RPG you’re looking for, but it’s the first Mario game for 2020.

Also, Death Stranding comes to PC, there’s EA’s new arena shooter Rocket Arena, and the “19th-century expedition simulator” Curious Expedition 2.

Comments

Surprisingly loaded week with Tsushima and Paper Mario, but also a Story of Seasons game.

That's a shame as I had an eye on Neon Abyss too. Too much!

Waifu uncovered? That sounds dangerous to even Google...

Don't worry, I believe it's the next Fire Emblem game.

I don’t know why, but in my head Paper Mario was at least a month away.

That’s about accurate using the 2020 timescale.
