NFL 2020: Draft

I hope we get a season by then.

The 10 year part says to me that there's likely some serious pushing of money into the future. Which I'm not sure is the right move when you're talking about a 24-year-old QB whose career will likely have multiple Super Bowl windows. Going all-in to try to maximize the immediate window doesn't seem like it's the right play.

Then again, the 10 year part could mean something other than prorating money out into eternity. It could be rife with escape hatches, more a symbolic thing than a legitimate one.

We'll see, I can't wait to see the details on this one.

I don't watch baseball but I celebrate Bobby B every July 1st.

15 more years to go!

If human civilization ends between now and 2031, do the Chiefs still owe him money?

What's this "if" business?

Honestly, the truest representation of the American Dream I've ever seen.

Spotrac has the contract details and it's, uh, definitely unique.

It's essentially a 3-year contract extension on top of his 2 existing contracted years, plus 7 years of what are ostensibly team options.

Starting in 2024, his following-year compensation starts becomes largely (or completely) guaranteed if he's on the roster at the start of the league year. By 2026, it starts getting staggered where about half (the roster bonuses) guarantee a year ahead of time, and salary guarantees the same year.

(Prior to 2024, the guarantees happen 2 years in advance, which makes getting out of them a lot harder, effectively making them guaranteed unless Mahomes completely melts down. Hence why I consider those first 3 new years fully contracted).

I'd say this deal ties them to Mahomes for the next 4 seasons, and after that, it becomes an annual reevaluation.

I think the deal is fine for now, but I think the odds this deal isn't torn up and replaced halfway through to be rather small. People have (mostly) clued in on the fact that contracts should be judged by the annualized average rather than the total lump sum figure, and this deal feels like it was made to exploit that. It makes for a $10 mil jump over the previous highest QB annual average, but it achieves that by using 2026-2031 dollars that nobody else's deal is.

This is real contract nerd stuff. I can't remember the last time I saw a deal that Spotrac required 13 bullet points in the notes section to detail the guarantee schedule.

Ask your agent if Spotrac is right for you.

Sorry Eagles fans, it turns out Desean Jackson is a nutjob. He took to Instagram to post a (fake) Hitler quote, and also linked to a Louis Farrakhan speech spouting anti-vax conspiracy theories.

Man, that was dumb. Really dumb. Like, I can see how he'd be excited by reading something saying that African Americans in America are the real Children of Israel, but why in the world is he reading that anyway? Lol

Oh, he follows Farrakhan? That explains pretty much all of it.

I take it the Nation still is held in esteem by a lot of folks?

I think Marquise Goodwin's about to slide up the Eagles depth chart.

That's close to a 50% increase in attendance, right?

I'm sorry, is that a minor league team? Jaguars?

It’s a European team. Based mostly in London.

Money talks.

Oh yeah, once FedEx and Nike said "No dice" the writing was on the wall.

The Atlanta Braves say they are "reviewing" the tomahawk chop chant.

No word from the Chiefs and their own chop, and I think their silence means that their Super Bowl victory should be vacated and awarded to the Niners, whose secondary was clearly distracted by the chop chants in the 4th quarter.

Probably fair. But the Niners have to cut Nick Bosa to square things.

Done. Sending him to the Eagles, who apparently consider anti-Semitism a slap-on-the-wrist level offense. DeSean Jackson's punishment? An undisclosed fine.

Uh . . .

They got enough security at the ballpark to throw out all the people who'll do it anyway?

Washington has announced that their name and logo have been retired.

Washington has not announced a new name.

So, for now, they're still the Redskins.

Sooooooooo typical.

From what I understand, they can't announce the name yet because they don't own the trademarks. I imagine that means the name won't be the Warriors since Snyder already owns that one and shouldn't need to wait. If it is RedTails, then I've seen that a couple random guys trademarked that in February, probably squatters that Snyder will have to pay off or something.

Uh . . .

I mean, if you drill that far down, every name that references humans has to go.

Patriots? Slaveowners!

Jets? Bombing civilians!

Vikings, Raiders, Buccaneers? Pillage and rape!

Only animal names remain. You all are Jaguars fans now.
