GWJ Strategy Gaming Group: Now Playing Midnight Suns

No votes just along for the ride

Awesome thanks all! Looks like we will have a good number to choose from for the final poll.

If the group picks a long grand strategy game, I’m open to 2 months. Guess we see after the final tally.

FINAL VOTING - NOON July 5 PST

So here are the final list of games that got 3 or more votes. Based on the earlier ground rules, I am not including Total War 3 Kingdoms as it's still $40. EU 4 made the final list, though for our first outing we may want to do something a little less intimidating. I'll leave it up to the group.

In the interest of giving folks a chance to buy during the Steam sale I'm keeping it simple. Please vote for your favorite from the list below. I'll then post the winner shortly after the cutoff so everyone can buy it Sunday evening if they don't have it.

I'm also going to hold off on voting unless there's a tie breaker since these are all games I'm interested in.

Company of Heroes 2 - 6 votes $9.06 master bundle

Battletech - 5 votes $9.99

The rest got 3 votes each:

Alpha Centauri - $5.99 on GOG

Endless Space 2 $9.99

Homeworld: Desert of Karak -$4.99

EU 4 - $7.49

Massive Chalice - $9.99

Thea 2 - $13.50

Total War: Shogun 2 - $7.50

Edit:

Changing my vote to Battletech

While I really want to play CoH2, I think Battletech would be better to play with a group. CoH I can play at any time, whereas I've struggled to get into Battletech and would love to discuss mechanics as I go.

Massive Chalice gets my vote!

Battletech is not only on the pile, but one I was planning to get to this year, so that's my vote.

I'm voting for Alpha Centauri. Tempted by Battletech, but that's a hefty campaign to commit to at the moment.

Battletech. Recently purchased on strong recommendations, I played one scenario and somehow it didn't grab me. Need to get back on that horse I guess.

Company of Heroes 2 for me. I’ve got and played Battletech when it was released, but I’ve never really gone through the DLCs. It’s a great game but had its issues on release.

Good list though!

Battletech. That is all.

Oh boy, two of my favourite games of all time on there. Tough choice but I'll go for Total War: Shogun 2. It's been five years since my last re-play so it might be time for another one!

Company of Heroes 2 here.

Battletech

Well it’s official: our first game is Battletech! Feel free to pick it up on sale and I’ll start a separate thread soon. Thanks all - looking forward to playing this with everyone!

Let's goooo!

Battletech was one of the reasons I ended up upgrading my PC, but even though I bought it shortly after, it never stuck with me. It was a bit slow and I ended up playing something else and never returning.

But I find the Battletech universe so interesting, I'm looking forward to playing it with you all. Sometimes I just need that little bit of motivation to get stuck in.

Also, I don't know if anyone plays, but I've sunk a good bit of time into the free to play MechWarrior Online. I'll be honest, it's not a "good" game, but it does feel nice to stomp around and shoot things. It might be cool to supplement our playthrough with a few rounds of jolly stompy GWJ cooperation.

Got a new machine coming this week so looking forward to it!

Also the first game thread is up! Hop in folks!

Oh, I missed this thread. Another club with games I can fail at playing.

Unlike CRPGs where I play a lot of them when they release, there might be a good chance I haven’t already played the games here at least.

Battletech is technically somewhere in my pile since I got it through Humble at some point.

Come join us Shadout! We just started the first game and you have until Aug 31 to finish!

Well this has provided a weird opportunity.

I played part-way through the campaign when the game launched.

I recently bought the DLC and re-started the campaign, but have since found out that the Flashpoint DLC is gated beyond the end of the campaign.

So I think I'm going to start a career mode playthrough, which should get me access to the DLC off the bat.

Sorry. Wrong thread!

Somehow I missed this thread and having heard it mentioned on the GWJ CC here I am! I enjoy strategy games a lot and 'somehow' have a few in my backlog to either start or get back to, I'll put my vote in for the next round.

I've played a bit of Battletech but been meaning to get back to it, so I'll be joining up for this first game

It’s that time folks - We need to start voting on our second game! Open at this point to new nominations and we’ll go from there.

Also, I’m going to roll out my new ranking system. Here’s my idea - you get one rank for playing a game and two for beating it. So you’ll advance just by participating but more slowly. If you have ideas on ranks let me know - I’m debating between modern military (private, lieutenant, captain, etc) and medieval (squire, Knight, count, etc).

I'm looking forward to seeing the second game. My heart was in for doing the first game but I knew I wasn't going to have that much time.

Ranks sounds good to me. With two ranks per game, I wonder if you'll run out fairly soon? Maybe you'd want to have Private I, Private II, etc., (or Knight I, Knight II, etc.) up to five, or three, or something, for each rank?

CK3?

Sure it's new, but it's also on Game Pass.

Forgot it was nomination time. I have some games that I'd be interested in exploring with the club that I might not get around to otherwise (HOI4 and maybe an early X-COM game come to mind), but for this go around, I'm thinking something with a shorter campaign since there's a decent change I'll participate in multiple clubs this quarter.

With that in mind, I'll nominate Endless Space 2.

I'll nominate Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus

I'll go with Into the Breach I think - something easy to dip into and out of a little, after my aborted Battletech campaign.

I was thinking to suggest the same thing! Nice.

Planetfall!

Ok here are the nominations so far including a couple from me - I still need to update the player list but will do that this weekend. I'm thinking a modern military system as Godzilla points out that's easiest for creating multiple ranks. You have private/private first class, lance corporal/corporal, second and first lieutenants, etc.

I'll leave the nomination process open till Sunday Sept 27 and then we can vote:

Company of Heroes 2 (top pick carrying over from last time)
Crusader Kings 3
Endless Space 2
Europa Universalis 4 (my pic)
Into the Breach
Planetfall
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus
