Playstation 5 Catch-All

Lots of things I thought looked really neat and compelling, but for me the highlight, even though we saw very little of it, was Volcano High, because...I feel it's pretty self evident, Life is Strange but with anthro dinosaurs, I don't feel the need to explain myself.

It'll be interesting to see what the hard drive situation is for the PS5. I have a 2TB internal hard drive in my PS4 currently. There is no way I will be done with my backlog by the time the PS5 hits. What are TB hard drive sizes like these days? I finally hit my limit tonight when Call of Duty downloaded its latest ridiculous update.

We don't know yet, but be prepared to replace the SSD with something proprietary.

I saw the games presentation again before bed last night.. and some of those games look VERY VERY interesting.. at least for me....

Returnal
Horizon Forbidden West
And the Zeldaesque . KENA

Hot takes after watching the showcase:

  • Project Athia reminded me of the Unreal engine 5 tech demo, in both gameplay and art design, even in 1080 it looks so damn good for a teaser.
  • Ratchet & Clank reminded me that I still need to play the one that released on PS4, it looked fairly chaotic though, which interests me.
  • I saw up-thread that someone likened the gameplay mechanics from Kena: Bridge of Spirits to Pikmin, my first thought was comparing them to Overlord .
  • Destruction Allstars looks like a cross between Twisted Metal mechanics and Monday Night Combat character design and goofy sportsmanship. This is likely a day one purchase from me.
  • Sackboy: A Big Adventure and Astro's Playroom both gave me a pretty strong "3D Mario games" vibe. I'll likely get the former as I've always been a big fan of the Little Big Planet games and the art direction that makes them standout.
  • Bugsnax looks like some crazy antics are bound to be found within. "You are what you eat." Indeed.

They've explicitly said you won't replace the proprietary hard drive, but you'll be able to add an additional off-the-shelf internal SSD from a short list (constraints are size and throughput, IIRC). List isn't available yet, as they'll have to test each drive for approval. Additionally, I think Czerny mentioned that you can attach an external USB drive, although you won't be able to play PS5 games directly off it. The implication was that you can play PS4 games that are loaded on the external drive, and I wouldn't be surprised if they add an "archiving" function that allows you to swap games from the external to internal drive and vice versa, but I wouldn't count on that being available at launch; I'd also expect that allows you to swap between the proprietary SSD and any internal SSD you install, but all this swapping capability is pure speculation on my part.

The placeholder PS5 listing that Amazon UK put up and almost immediately took down a few days ago listed it as a "2 TB" model, even though it's known that the SSD's size is 825 GB. Mostly likely that "2 TB" is simply placeholder text and has nothing to do with the actual PS5.

I wish that Sackoy offers a co-op or 4-op like 3D Mario world, which was a game my wife, son and I LOOOOVED

Much of the Sackboy video definitely showed what looked like at least 2-player co-op (the standard brown sackboy and the dreadlocked purple one), and a couple shots seemed to show four-player co-op. I'll be very surprised if those turn out to be AI characters, especially given the fact that Little Big Planet featured co-op in every iteration.

For my part, I like the design. I'm not sure how well the look will age, to be fair, but I'm also glad Sony is trying something more than 'rectangle'. Like others in here, I wasn't even sure if it would lay on its side, but I'm glad to see it does.

Trailer Roundup and my personal thoughts.

Of the trailers I saw yesterday, Demon's Souls is a must buy, as is Hitman 3 (but I strongly suspect that will also come out on PC, and that's where I have 1 and 2, so...) and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. I should admit I haven't finished either "Spider-Man" or" Hitman 2", but I'll still gladly add both to the pile!

Kena looks like a response to "Breath of the Wild", but I could get into that, so it's a high interest.

Resident Evil 8... I need to see about playing 7 first, see if I even like the first person Blair Witch format.

My 'hot take' for this roundup is that I'm probably done with the Ratchet & Clank series. I loved the first 3 or 4, but the last many games have devolved into meme humor, which I just don't find funny. I know I played both "Into the Nexus" and the reboot... but I don't remember basically anything about either.
That said, the trailer for R&C was a lot less of the meme humor, and the female Ratchet might be an interesting change-up, so it's not completely off my list.

Tokyo: Ghostwire looks like it should be part of "The Secret World's" universe, but while the first trailer had me intrigued, this latest trailer made me less interested. It looks like a lot of 1v1 battles in a way that made me think of a VR game. Specifically "The Unspoken" which looked great, didn't hold my attention. Still, the worldbuilding is at least enough for me to keep up with G:T. I look forward to Ghostwire: London.

Horizon: Forbidden West (It's going to be really hard for me to not shorten that to HZD:FW, even though that's not the title)... Looks interesting, but I haven't finished H:ZD. IDK, interesting world, likable main character, but the gameplay loop doesn't capture me.

Godfall... what even is it? Is it a faster Dark Souls? Is it a PvP game? No idea. The former, I might be interested in. The latter, not at all.

Sackboy Adventure. Looks like they're dropping the whole Little Big Planet thing entirely, and with that, the ability for the player to make their own stages? If that means it's now a platformer a la Mario, I'll give it a look!

It sounds like Miles Morales is an expansion that comes with a remaster of Spider-Man PS4. So it's not a full-blown sequel, which honestly makes a lot more sense to me.

Basically, it sounds like a way to get people to spend $60 on a game they already own for an expansion that cost a lot less to develop, minor improvements made to the base game to "take advantage of the PS5".

I ended up looking up that Ratchet & Clank gameplay again to get a better idea of what's going on and what's supposed to be the impressive tech demo stuff, as the actual gameplay ended up being a let-down after the initial trailer. There's only one point of the trailer where you're doing some impressive "only possible with an SSD" tech, and that's when Ratchet drops down and clearly jumps from one point of the map to a whole other. Even then, it's not the same as dropping from one whole level with its own unique set of textures to another whole level with a separate set of unique textures and other data.

In the end, I realized I was actually looking at something that felt less impressive than Prey. Obviously, Ratchet & Clank not only looks better, but has a lot of effects going on (someone above mentioned how chaotic it looked, and that's in part due to all the civilians running around, the different effects each sub-weapon is creating, etc. etc.).

But it doesn't look like stuff that can't be done this generation.

Which is where I admit this is a bit of a let down. The games look good, but aside from the consumer-addict hype of being able to purchase a new piece of tech, there's no reason to be excited for next-gen at all. They've failed to really demonstrate or describe the advantage afforded by the SSD or any other power boosts.

Admittedly, I wouldn't expect that until around 2022 anyway.

Can we use Miles in the base game's stealth missions, because that'd be a hell of a lot easier.

I think that is terrific news. I was disappointed that a sequel might have been rushed to get into the PS5 launch line up.

Sounds like it's an expand-alone like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Infamous: First Light, or the like. Which is cool, because I tend to strongly prefer those smaller experiences (and boy, Spider-Man was more than a bit over-proofed), but it does make one wonder why Miles Morales isn't coming out on the PS4.

Ehh... Depending on your experience with R&C, you really don't. I loved the early games in particular, and this reboot just didn't feel right to me, especially the less edgy characters. If you've watched the movie, you could probably skip this one, since it's basically the same thing. It's the only R&C mainline game that I didn't 100% complete.

They've done not-rectangle before: PS3 original release and slim. I don't mind the curved top, especially since I'm guessing their goal is to prevent you from putting something on top. I hate the curved top AND bottom, and I say those directions because very few people are going to have it set upright. This is going to be on its long flat side for the vast majority of installations. It's going to look weird and out of place, immediately and for the foreseeable future. If the goal was for heat control, then they should have found a better solution.

I really enjoyed the R&C make on PS4. The bits of the movie they cut in looked terrible, but the gameplay itself was great.

It was the first one I'd played, actually. And the only one, because when I looked at previous games in the series and saw titles like "Up Your Arsenal", I decided to pass. I don't have time for that kind of crass, '90s gaming sh*t.

The PS4 R&C is the only one I've played, and I didn't really enjoy it. All the weapons felt clunky to use, and the fights were chaotic in a way I didn't enjoy. I was surprised when I realized Spider-Man was from the same developers, because it was such a joy to control and move around in compared to R&C.

EDIT: Clock and I apparently have exactly reversed opinions of R&C and Spider-Man

The PS5 case didn't really look like something that Sony's industrial designers are especially proud of. The look of the thing, I think, lends strength to the rumors that Sony has been having trouble managing the machine's thermal properties.

The Ratchet and Clank game looked really good, and closer to "next gen" than anything else they showed.

Horizon Far West looked good and I expect it will be very impressive when it finally comes out. The art direction was a little questionable though. The robo-animals looked less cleanly robotic than they did in Zero Dawn. With all the scurrying around the screen, it was much harder to tell what was going on with them.

Even though I'm a R&C fan, I'm with beanman101283. The "gunplay" of the game is not its selling point. It's a silly run-around-and-blow-up-enemies-in-humorous-ways. My favorite was Going Commando (the 2nd in the series) when they implemented the more modern control scheme, but still had a lot of the early charm. After that, they kept trying to make the gunplay more and more important to the game, and it never felt tight enough. Especially with Deadlocked. And I never liked the multiplayer.

Anyway, turns out opinions are opinions and if you feel like you "need" to play a game, then go for it. (:

I'm very confused if Solar Ash is a PS exclusive since it was originally announced as Solar Ash Kingdom in a Nintendo Direct. Are they different games?

Doesn't seem like they're different, seems like Sony came in with a bag of cash and swooped what was once a cross-platform title up.

Do you have a source for it being an exclusive? I can't find one.

It's on the Epic Store as Solar Ash Kingdom but I think they just haven't changed the name and the game is now called Solar Ash.

Yeah I'm more interested in a purposefully smaller Spider-Man game than a full-blown sequel at the moment.

The PS5 is looking pretty size-y:

The PS3 was just under 13" wide. Looks like this sucker's gonna be pushing 16" or so.

Yeesh. I have an original model PS3, and it's awkward to fit in my media center, especially to give it good air flow. The PS5 looks like a PC tower.

Not surprised. Both new consoles are using pretty modern AMD APU’s that probably are 105-140W. You need considerable cooling to keep those from melting.

I would guess you will also need to make sure these have adequate airflow. I doubt I’ll be able to stash them inside my entertainment centers like the current consoles. Those already sound like jet engines after an hour or so and I have to open the cabinet doors to get more air in.

I hope you can turn the lights out on the inner edges.

I will happily take a big console if the damn thing has great cooling. My PS4 Pro is a noise nightmare. I don't even mind having to find a place to stash it vertical.

I watched some of the trailers in 1440p with headphones, and everything looks and sounds good. I'm excited for Demon's Souls since it was always my favorite but I never actually finished it. I think I'd just do a full magic build and try and cheese everything.

Definitely will be going PS5 plus PC plus Switch in the future. I don't really have a preference over PS5 or Series X except that I want to play all those Japanese games that will only come to PS5.

What is the difference between the ps5 and ps5 pro?

Taharka wrote:

It's an ARPG with sick looking armor.

I used to have a glass-door-fronted media tower, but it wound up frying my Wii from heat build-up. At that point I replaced it with a completely open media stand (something like this); technology's gotten hotter and hotter over the years.

Regarding Ratchet & Clank: not everyone has to like every game, but I enjoyed the hell out of the PS4 game, notwithstanding some of its flaws. I agree that the writing wasn't as good as the original trilogy (the games after that tended to be okay to better-than-okay), and its rehash of parts of the first game would have been more tedious except...wow, technology's forward march allowed them to make the environments way more beautiful and alive.

Mainly, though, it was a great reminder of how fun those games were; even though I have a backwards-compatible PS3 still hooked up, and almost all the PS2 & PS3 games, I hadn't played something as light-hearted and chaotically silly as a Ratchet & Clank game in what felt like forever. I had a smile on my face almost the entire time I was playing it.

Umm...they haven't even started to design a PS5 Pro, if there's even going to be one?

Never had that problem. But did go with open when I bought the last one because the previous one in our furnished apartment with glass didn't have enough room for my sound system years ago. Couldn't close the doors.

Now that I have a toddler walking around and trying to grab everything I wish I had doors again.

jbavon wrote:

There is no pro system announced. There's the standard PS5 with a blu-ray disc drive and a cheaper digital-only PS5 without a disc drive.

Yep!
But damn, it really is huge. Are their any measures of the size yet? Not even sure it can fit in my tv stand.

That is another thing I am hoping for too.
