NCAA Football 2020-21 Season

...assuming that there is one.

We’re undefeated!! Maybe the longest we will be in a long time

UGA has all the QBs again! All QBs will eventually spend some time in Athens.

Curious what folks thoughts are on going to a game if able to. Adhering to whatever social distancing and regulations the school or government mandates of course.

I still have my season tickets for Cal, still have a plane ticket to Vegas in hand for our opening game, and if allowed to I will go.

Probably should link to this from the old thread so everyone knows we moved.

This! It's Forum 101, yo!

Started a thread for Sports Pandemic talk.

We have discussions that encompass this in several threads, but this isn’t so much to end those, as each sport has its own set of challenges. But often, the topic becomes general, and we begin mixing sports in ways that aren’t useful. At the very least, for those of us that look at threads for multiple sports, it can sometimes make it hard to not go off topic, and an off topic that is already destined for Cleveland.

Pac-12 is going to conference only so I guess I will officially cancel my flight to Vegas now.

Looks like my prediction in last years' thread will hold true.

Will just leave it here.. posted May 1 2020.

-----------------

It's official, no College Football in 2020.

Where did I hear this? Do I have insider info from the NCAA? Friends from the Networks? Commissioners on speed dial? Cousin works for the CDC?

Nope... I saw this:

Cal Projected to be best in Pac-12

CAL FANS: All the football stars are aligned in the Pac-12 for us... new everything at UW, Herbert and OC out in Oregon, furd down... Cal has Oregon, UW and stanfurd at home... Mack Brown can't touch us... so there are 14 Million possibilities that show Cal winning the Pac-12

COVID-19:

Because there is no reality where Cal goes to the Rose Bowl.. the season must be cancelled.

So we can blame Carlbear for the pandemic?

I'm extremely unclear on how going conference only helps combat coronavirus, and how such a strange idea immediately became popular. Is the idea that buses are safer than planes? I assume most Power 5 teams fly charters anyway, so it's the exact same people either way. What am I missing?

That it was really the first step in a dance to cancel the entire season. It’s just a matter of time.

Let's be honest, the motivation is always money. All the FCS games are a 6-figure payout to some school, and some of the lower FBS ones too, so that they don't have to play home and home. Every P5 team probably saves half a million eliminating the non-conference games.

You clairvoyant bastard.

For most Pac-12 teams the non conference is the first 3-4 weeks, so at a minimum the start of the season gets pushed out. Understood that's not all games, but I'm pretty sure getting USC-ND back on the schedule won't be that hard if suddenly the miracle cure comes about. That and any fewer games doesn't "combat" coronavirus but any fewer exposure vectors the better. Maybe this puts some weird math in a national champ, but at least it still allows for a conference champ for what that's worth.

but this is probably the real answer.

Since there still is no guarantee of future football, I was pleasantly reminded of past football on Twitter tonight. Specifically, the utter insanity of the ending of the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Who calls THREE trick plays in 2 posessions?

It's the ETSU problem. I mentioned here or in the sports pandemic thread that two of Georgia's first three opponents were ETSU and La. Monroe and people with UGA were already worried about what would happen after they played those teams. Then, I read an article, I think on the Athletic that looked what ETSU was capable of doing in regards to testing, and it wasn't much...

But, I think everyone else is right. Going to conference only kicks the can down the road maybe a few more weeks before they have to face reality and cancel or try and move the season to the spring.

In Dawg land, everyone is abuzz about JT Daniels getting his waiver to play this season and how the Dawgs now have a QB controversy, but I'm now not expecting to see Jamie Newman play a game for the Dawgs as surely he goes to the NFL now.

I think there is a greater than 50% that this is the end of college sports as we knew them. It was already problematic and was facing years of revenue sharing issues with its athletes.

What if the XFL gets rebooted as a minor league that plays its games in the university stadiums, which they just pay the school for access. Maybe they use the school mascots and logos, but the players do not have to go to school.

You can either make it an 18-22 league or full blown minors with old players still working to make an NFL squad.

2021 Rose Parade Cancelled...

Can someone please take me to one of the other alternate universes where the is no Covid and Cal goes to the Rose Bowl? That's basically all of them at this point.

I've checked 14,000,605 alternate timelines and Cal does not go to the Rose Bowl in any of them.

Sorry.

But maybe there's hope in 14,000,606+!

Well you're all wrong... as always no matter how good Cal is or is expected to be something will come to screw it up. Joking aside, objectively this is probably the most complete Cal team since the Aaron Rodgers days, and the rest of the Pac-12 is about as low as its been in a long time. If there needs to be a perfect storm for Cal to get to the Rose Bowl this was it... oh well...

The MEAC (it's the I-AA historically black conference that's not the SWAC) just announced that it won't play sports in the fall.

What that means is a few Power 5 schools just lost out on a home scrimmage and an easy W (assuming Power 5 schools will be playing football this fall, which they won't).

That's what it means for the Power 5. Some of those schools in the MEAC, not just their programs, but the entire schools, are in serious danger of going under.

The MEAC as a conference is about done. I think they'll be down to six football schools by next fall.

The schools themselves are generally in OK shape. Most of the rest are state schools, which generally don't get closed (though they do get merged sometimes), and Howard is Howard.

The more immediate danger is furloughs. Most everyone working in the athletic departments at the MEAC schools will start losing paychecks before too long.

Didn't some Alabama school recently stop football for a few years, then reinstate it? Some drama with the Bear Bryant family or something? Makes you think smaller schools can survive the temporary absence of football.

UAB. They brought if back and are doing really well.

While nothing has been published yet, the main Bay Area pac-12 sports reporter has pieced together what they believe will be the framework for our conference only schedule.

https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/07/...

Highlights are:

- 10-Game conference only schedule (we are normally 9 conf + 3 OOC)
- Season to start Sept 19 (would have been week 3)
- Every team will have 2 byes on the schedule for make up games
- Pac-12 championship game could be on any one of 3 dates in December. All have already been cleared by Allegiant Stadium (Raiders new stadium), which again allows for more makeup dates in case the season doesn't start on time (if it even starts).

None of this is actually approved or final, but Wilner has generally been very good at getting information out of the conference.

The Sun Belt (App State) just pushed the start of fall play to the first week of September. That doesn't affect App football, which lost its season opener when the MEAC punted on fall sports.

Clemson, meanwhile, just announced that it'll start fall classes online and will be online-only through late Sept. I don't think this affects football -- I'm sure players are back on campus right now -- but this is a tiny snowball that's starting its trip downhill.
