NFL 2020: Draft

You know, there are those player-coach combos through history that just seem perfect. Joe Montana-Bill Walsh. Bill Belichick-Tom Brady. And, of course, Drew Brees-Sean Payton, who are perfect both in terms of their fit as offensive players, and complete dickbags, in their own ways.

I was going to go with "offensive people", but it seemed too cute.

Brees('s PR team) whipped up an apology posted to Instagram (in text with the most stock-y stock photo ever, can't be bothered to even read a statement into a camera.)

Even though what he said yesterday was a continuation of his years-long stance, he's white and famous, so he gets as many do-overs as needed to craft a message that waters things down enough to dull the backlash.

A bigtime Saints fan told me he was afraid Brees would get fired over this. I told him if he gets fired, it will be because of his noodle arm, not his sh*tty personality and racist views.

Rat Boy gas the right of it. This will lead to Brees’ retirement. Won’t happen anytime soon, but I don’t see how he continues to play in New Orleans.

I can't imagine somebody less-suited to run Sean Payton's offense than Jameis Winston.

*giggling*

I swear I didn't have beans for lunch.

How about the poor man's Tim Tebow?

As much fun as I would have watching a contending NFC team toss out their Hall of Fame QB, I see basically zero chance of Brees suffering any lasting repercussions from this.

White quarterbacks barely suffer any consequence from more open racism. Speaking of which, Buffalo has now drafted two QBs in a row who have put racist sh*t in digital form.

First we had (the bad) Josh Allen and his tweets that really liked the N-word, granted more in a wannabe hip-hop context than a neo-nazi one, but still veering way too far out of his lane. (Then again, he also worked an "If it ain't white, it ain't right!" in there too, so...)

Now, newly drafted QB Jake Fromm has one-upped that with some racist text messages from last year leaked onto Twitter, for which he is super duper sorry.

Brees' people are probably setting up an appearance on Ellen to try to appear contrite in video form.

He better hurry or there will be no viewers left to see it.

If you're looking for a pitch-perfect definition of the phrase "read for filth," please direct yourself to Shannon Sharpe's utter defenestration of Drew Brees today.

Brees might have to do some more PR but I seriously doubt his job is on the line. Dude has done so much for that city.

This. Also, I don't see what he said as racist but oblivious to everything going on around him. Completely ignorant.

To make that the focus of his concern *right now*.... Maybe not quite racist, but definitely completely insensitive to the realities of racist policies and history in America.

I would say bringing this up right now, with the history of players kneeling to protest police brutality, in a time where the police are out of hand and violently beating the hell out of/killing people, is, in fact, racist as all hell, because it's very much a reactionary way of minimizing what people are going through. Saying "Well, I'm for the FLAG and AMERICA" is putting all of Those People on the other side of the argument, as not real patriots and real Americans, and, yeah, that's racist.

Doing that "both sides" BS these days is providing validation for the people who want to minimize things, and screw Drew Brees.

Did he bring it up? I thought a reporter had asked him that and it was a spontaneous answer. I had just heard what he said on the radio but hadn't personally looked into the context.

*I'm not defending him at all. I thought it was completely ignorant statement when I heard it.

That's a factor? Seriously, at some point, you recognize he's a high-profile, extremely wealthy white dude who has made multiple public statements that are ignorant and overtly support the status quo, and, in this case, a particular part of the status quo. Kneeling for the national anthem is 100% tied to a history of overt, racist police brutality, and, in the aftermath of that, this asshat decided to "both sides" the issue and double down. He can eat a plate of dicks.

B-b-but he says he's for equality for all. Doesn't that mean anything?

I'm sure he has a few friends of color. Doesn't that count?

/s

Had. Had a few friends of colour.

Yes, he was prompted by being asked the question. And if he were a 21-year-old rookie, *maybe* you could chalk up the poor timing of making a statement to lacking media savvy and answering a question he shouldn't.

But he is 41 years old and has been taking questions from NFL reporters for almost as long as that hypothetical rookie has been alive.

And even excusing the timing doesn't excuse the opinion itself. It's still sh*tty sentiment expressed in the guise of flag-waving no matter when he chooses to share it.

Maybe he just doesn’t really pay attention to the news in New Orleans. Because part of the context in his statement is having lived in a community in which race relations is a constant topic. It comes off as a giant FU to a huge part of the Saints fan base.

Like, THAT’S what he got out of making a home in New Orleans?

Jayhawker wrote:

Well yeah, he lives in the Garden District where there are basically only white people. It's kind of like "making a home" in LA by living in Malibu.

(To be clear, I don't begrudge anyone for choosing to live in a nice, rich area. I do begrudge them using those places as ivory towers and enjoying blissful ignorance of the realities within the city from which they extract their economic gains.)

That ad the players came out with last night was strong. I don't know what the NFL is going to do from here on out, but I do know Goodell and the owners will never live down what they did to Kaepernick. Nor should they.

Probably something like:

Black Players: "Your treatment of Kaepernick was absolutely intolerable, and we will not be silenced. When will you listen to your players?"

NFL: "Boy COVID sure was a Female Doggo, but we all pulled together and got through it! Together we can accomplish anything! We're so proud of the NFL family, our players and fans. Kids, go outside and #Play60. Football is BACK!"

While Donald Trump today said that Drew Brees had nothing to apologize for, Roger Goodell went and did this.

Yeah, that's........ a surprise. I'm still skeptical, but i'm surprised that the players flexed on them to this extent.

Removed unhelpful comment. If Roger Goodell actually stands his ground and doesn't cave to his racist fans and the president this will be good for the country.

I'm skeptical as well. Unless change and some admission to specific transgressions in the past follow, it's just words, just "we're listening".

Call me when Goodell actually says Kaepernick's name and admits they did him dirty. Not just in 2017 but that that bullsh*t "workout" they railroaded him with a few months ago, right in the MIDDLE of the season when rosters are set and teams are busy gameplanning for next week's opponent.

That said, this is still better ground than the league was standing on a day ago. Let's see if they stick with this messaging beyond just this immediate damage control.

Jerruh's going to try another palace coup.

Weak statement when it's easy. When it was hard they couldn't be found.

But we know what billionaires and their lackeys are all about. What they've always been about.
