General VR Catch-All

Thanks for the reminder that The Lab exists!

Kid 1 demanded a turn in the slingshot realm and Kid two had a few minutes in the postcard realm. Much fun was had!

Oculus store has some (small) discounts on Quest apps right now so I've been checking out some of the recommended titles. Real VR Fishing was an instant hit. Not only is it gorgeous, but being able to watch YouTube Premium while Fishing is awesome. A funny Drybar routine with some angry bass on the line makes for some fun times. As a bonus... My spouse has demanded turns and has spent more time fishing than I have at this point. Luckily my personal headset arrived a few days ago so now I have two Quests kicking around. Side by side VR fishing must look hilarious to our kids.

Tried Thrill of the Fight, but had to request a refund. I have enough space for the ring, but there's stuff and kids and a dog and I was getting anxiety attacks when shuffling around and swinging punches. I'm a tall guy with a long reach... It would only be a matter of time.

Picked up VR Gun Club as a consolation prize. So far so good!

Make sure to check out the Rift store for crossbuy games first because they are cheaper there. It's slimy but true.

Thanks for the tip!

Tried this and did manage to derail my train and accidentally multi track drift. If your a train sim fan this is probable crack for you.

Derail Valley has been on my list for a while, but somehow I never realized it's only $20. Guess I should dive in.

I bought American Truck Simulator to try in VR, and noped right out of it after only about 30 minutes. I have never had issues with nausea or vertigo in VR, but somehow ATS does the trick.

I have Rift and forcing ASW to lock frame rate solves that for me. It’s one of my favorite VR games.

I will have to go back and try to get past it. I play a ton of flight sims in VR and have no issues with them at all. Something about the acceleration/deceleration in ATS just made me want to hurl.

It also feels like the VR implementation is an afterthought. You have to opt in to a beta version for VR support, and some of the aspects feel kind of rough. Maybe I need to experiment with settings or gameplay options. I ended up with my GPS map floating over the steering wheel, and I couldn't figure out how to close it. Also, any time you go into a menu the truck cab is frozen and locked in to your perspective, but the menu is still static in space in front of you. So the VR environment and menu are moving all over the place relative to each other - hard to explain, and very nausea-inducing.

It's the same in EuroTruckSim2.
There's a menu screen that has a truck with the camera panning around it in a fixed perspective. The first time that came up I had to bail on the headset. Combination of static menu screen in front with everything else panning and moving was just instant sick.

Yeah, it's not a native VR game. I believe there is a single developer that works on the VR support officially unofficially. I never had those reactions to ATS or ETS2 so I'm probably not the best to take VR advice from on this one, I rarely have issue with VR games and am lucky in that regard.

That said, they are still great games to chill with while listening to your favorite podcast, even in flat mode

VR doesn't seem to get enough traffic on the forums so here goes:

Budget Cuts is just really great. Love the stealth aspects, the humor is dead on. Lots of silly, fun interactions.

I've also been playing Blade & Sorcery. I bounced off it the first time but had a great time trying to swing from a chandelier and sword slash folks the other night.

As an aside, I tried streaming both games from my computer to my parents house (about a 30 minute drive) and it was totally playable. Wasn't the ideal experience but it was very neat to play VR from my home computer from someone else's house (via Virtual Desktop on the Quest) all over the internet.

I keep meaning to get back to Budget Cuts - I've barely touched it.

Most of my VR use is either fitness (some combination of Beat Saber, Pistol Whip, Dance Collider, Audio Trip, Until You Fall, Synth Riders) or sim racing (Race Room Racing Experience, Assetto Corsa Competizione).

Shout outs to a couple lesser known titles: Ultrawings is a great flight sim that is very Pilotwings-y, and In Death is my favorite VR archery game.

I don't recall the game but there is a VR game that is a emulator for dreamcast, PS1 and the PS2. When you fire up the game you setup your room. Hook up your consoles and pickup and insert the game you want to play. The crazy thing about it is you can play light guns games in it. You can also play multiple games at the same time in it.

This?

Yep that is the one.

I need to try that sometime.

This video is actually what pushed me to try again. UpIsNotJump has been my quarantine binge channel lately.

It's a good one. One of the few creators where I'll happily re-watch a video if I stumble across it.

I also really appreciate his skill learning videos, too. The carpentry one was just great. He obviously spends a lot of time making each video and they're very fun.

Has anyone taken a stab at building a Project Northstar headset?
It is an open sourced design for cheap AR headset with leap motion hand tracking.

The shipping date on my Valve Index finally moved up from 8+ weeks to 4 weeks. Which means my VR headset will finally be incoming after a 3 month wait. So that combined with the Steam sale, what are the 5 - 8 best VR experiences I should pick-up?

My shortlist based purely on anecdotes and what I've seen:

  • Boneworks
  • Half-Life Alyx (included with the Index)
  • Beat Sabre

The three you have listed are great. If you're new to VR, don't start with Boneworks, or at least ease into it. It's definitely a more extreme game as far as comfort level goes (it's great though).

SuperHot is my go to when recommending VR games. Budget Cuts is really neat and is on sale frequently. I just grabbed The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners so I can't speak to my personal experience yet since I just bought it but I've heard it's really really good. Blade and Sorcery is some really good sandbox combat, it's surprisingly fun.

Here's a few highlights from my VR library...

In Death - best VR archery game
Ultrawings - spiritual successor to Pilotwings. It's a little barfy, but it was the game that I trained my VR tolerance on, and now very few things make me nauseous
SKyrim/Fallout VR - if you like Bethesda games, they pretty great in VR.
Moss - super cute VR platformer
Pistol Whip - John Wick Simulator
A Fisherman's Tale - great puzzle game with a cool recursive space gimmick.
Audica - Beat Saber with guns
Eagle Flight - does exactly what it says on the tin
Until You Fall - great sword melee game

Also, check your existing library -you've probably got some things lying around in there that already support VR.

I'd also add that Google Earth is pretty awesome in VR

Does anyone know if I can use a leap motion controller to play VR games/apps without the headset?
IIRC at least the Oculus would show what was happening on your monitor.

If you have Elite Dangerous, I recommend playing it in VR.

Yeah, I was going to mention this one. Super intuitive, novel concept, works great in VR.
