Welcome and happy “2,354th Anniversary of the Battle of the Granicus” week! This was Alexander the Great’s season opener against Persia: a bunch of provincial satraps mustered a force to stop Alexander crossing over into Persia, and it was all looking fine until Alexander smashed their lines with a patented wedge cavalry charge that almost got him killed.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered, by Platinum Games, is coming to all consoles this week, thanks to a wildly successful Kickstarter in February. This was a quirky (i.e., good, in a different way) Wii U game that many of you missed because it was a Wii U game. Cult classics don’t die any more, they just rest for 7 years or so.

If I had VR, my pick of the week would be War Remains: Dan Carlin Presents an Immersive Memory. Yes, history podcast nerds, that is the Dan Carlin. Off the back of Dan Carlin’s mammoth series on the First World War, this is a VR experience that puts you in the trenches at Passchendaele. This is not so much a game as an immersive experience designed to give you a sense of what it was like to undergo the multiple traumas of the trenches: artillery barrages, machine guns, barbed wire, disease. You’re not there to frag tangoes or hijack a tank; this is more like a VR documentary. I’ve never wanted VR so badly.

Maneater is an open-water, shark RPG. Most preview videos give you the elevator pitch: go on Jaws-like rampages around crowded beaches, with arcade-action chomping mechanics plus score-and-combos baked in like GTA, except the copious blood and screaming don’t seem as morally questionable when you’re a shark. Maybe to make you feel better, the game sends sharkhunters after you, with obnoxious, wiseguy-voiced goons straight out of the Batman games (“Hey Sharkie, I got somethin’ for ya!”). No one has qualms about killing yappy goons! Beyond the chomping, it’s an RPG with stats and upgrades and the like. You will start as a puny pup and grind your way through gropers and turtles before you can take on humans. Areas will have a boss, an apex predator to take down when you’re strong enough. Late game, elder shark abilities get pretty crazy, too, like shark armour and mutations from toxic waste. This could be the sleeper hit of 2020. GOTW.

Comments

Saints Row the Third was one of the most fun times I have had in games. A lot of that was due to playing the full campaign in online co-op with a good friend but if i can find someone to do the same with I might be tempted back.

I do hope Wonderful 101 does really well for Platinum as this is the beginning of a new phase in their existence of self-publishing.

Maneater is on my radar due to it being from Tripwire. They tend to do combat really well, though usually it's with guns. Time to find out if they can do the same with sharks.

Wonderful 101 is now on my wishlist. Apart from that I'm happy to finally get to play What the Golf!

Let's not kid ourselves, me and many people out there this friday are pretty much just going to be singing this to ourselves on a loop:

Maneater and Monstrum call out to me.
