Assassin's Creed Valhalla RPG Catch-All

So do I actually need to get around to watching the Vikings TV show...

The Last Kingdom on Netflix would have more to do with what we've seen of this particular setting than Vikings.

I'll second 'The Last Kingdom.' It's very good. Similar feel in many ways to the trailer.

I really liked the books I read in The Last Kingdom series. I'm a sucker for Bernard Cornwell's style, though.

I am way too excited for this game. Black Flag and Origins had a really profound effect on me so this is doing things to my brain.

Looks great. I'm hoping there is a concurrent PC release. It's been a while since I bought an AC game. Do they delay the PC releases?

They do not delay PC releases. The AC ports on PC have been extremely good and, recently, have been considered better than the console versions. It is (timed) exclusive to the Epic Games Store, however.

*sigh that lasts ten times longer than it should physically be able to*

I just learned that Epic FINALLY added Canadian currency so I have that at least.

Personally, I don't mind the Epic Games Store. It's convenient to have everything in one place and the EGS launcher is not where it should be considering a lot of the fact finding was already done by GoG and Steam but it's fine.

I don't care about adding a launcher, that's fine. GoG Galaxy makes that easy enough to deal with.

I do, however, have a problem with Tencent, who own 40% of Epic Games, and don't want to give them any personal and financial information whatsoever.

...Also, it occurs to me that Ubi runs their own PC storefront. Surely I'll be able to purchase the game directly from Ubisoft.

Not selling your own game would be madness.

I forgot UPlay existed! And it is there.

At this point, Tencent (and pretty much any major corporation) already owns something I've used and has all my information. Personal preferences, though.

Some more good details on Ubi's site:

News update

Reading through those... wow. I know AC: Odyssey has been compared to The Witcher 3 before, but it sounds like they went even further towards that model. Not that I'm complaining, mind you.

I look forward to Crusader Assassin Kings' Creed: The Old Gods of Valhalla.

That's just Geralt looking over White Orchard wearing a Skellige gambeson.

Yup this looks great, everything I've heard sounds great as well. I like the return of the hidden blade/social blending/and a return to the assassin story's. Glad they kept a choice between male and female again but damn it's so hard for me to make that choice! I always wondered what Alexios sounded like but Kassandra was to good not to pick.

This is everything I could have wanted from the sound of it, hope it turns out well. I also hope the PS4 version still runs as well as the other games and doesn't suffer from being the worst port

Yeah, that should work fine. Got Odyssey through UPlay. It is not a great platform by any means. But not exactly worse than the alternative either, and does its job. You even support the developers more directly that way

Sail across the icy North Sea to discover and conquer the broken kingdoms of England. Immerse yourself in activities like hunting, fishing, dice, and drinking games, or engage in traditional Norse competitions like flyting – or, as it's better known, verbally devastating rivals through the art of the Viking rap battle

Ugh. I have to say, one thing I really liked about Origin and Odyssey was that it felt like a more focused AC. Except for the annoying ship battles. Everything was centered around the combat.
But this seems more like everything I dislike about open world games, filled with bad mini games everywhere you look.

To whoever disliked the big battles in Odyssey: I think opinions range all over the place on that feature. The nice thing is that except for the tutorial one, they are pretty much completely optional.

That's what I'm liking about the newer AC games... they're providing a big playground of gameplay, and players can pick and choose what activities they are interested in. I'm hoping this game continues developing that idea. The downside is that it will drive the completionists stark raving bonkers.

And a plea in response to a couple other messages I've seen: please, let's not judge the game before it's released? It might be great, it might be garbage (though complete garbage is not likely with Ismail at the helm), but we're not going to know until it is in our grubby little paws.

I purchased Odyssey from the UPlay store. Can't complain too much. Though Steam definitely seems to be the better platform. My biggest complaint though is the game (and DLC) go on sale more on Steam than on the UPlay store. At this current moment, you can buy Odyssey and all it's DLC for cheaper than just the DLC on the UPlay store.

Gameplay reveal at the Xbox Series X Game Thing this Thursday. Starts at 8am PST.

My roommate is a very light gamer, she's mostly played Lego games for the last decade, since moving in I showed her Spyro Reignited and a Kingdom Hearts remastered and she's back in and ordered a PS4. I've also played a few Assassin Creeds in front of her, Syndicate, Origins, and Odyssey all intriguing her, even my talk of 3 has made her look even further back at the franchise.

When the trailer for Valhalla released, we watched it together, now this person whose last big game experiences were Lego is swearing me up and down because she wants this to play Valhalla and that Ubisoft Collectors edition with the lithographs really looks good to her.

After some discussions on why she was so interested suddenly in a series she's never touched, she revealed it was the setting, she loves viking mythology and she was willing to learn an entirely new set of skills to experience it. That turned on a light bulb in my head, is that what these new settings are? Hitting up large mythological histories to bring people who normally wouldn't play the games in?

No matter what I am entirely excited to play. Though maybe before I should finish off Syndicate/Origins side missions/DLC and finish off Odyssey's story.

The settings are pretty much everything for me in these games at least. Even if I genuinely liked Odyssey’s gameplay.

Not a fan of the mythological aspects though. I’d prefer if they focused on history. Though Odyssey strikes a decent enough balance with the mythological creatures mostly being side content, and then later goes all in on that aspect in the dlc.

I still sometimes see people say they want an AC set in present day and I don't understand why they think that's interesting. The historical tourism is the whole point for me.

The settings are a huge draw for me too. The tourism mode in Origins was a fantastic idea and I hope they do that with this as well.

Assassin's Creed real world isn't set in modern times, however. It's some weird future. If they committed and made a full new thing and explored that space, I'd be down for it.

3 released, and it's modern day took place in, 2012. If the current modern storyline is set in the future, it's close enough to not matter.

Alternate future where Abstergo tech has advanced past what we actually have. They'll do one and have it set in the near future but is actually just another simulation and the entire time you're actually an Isu dreaming of a human.

Yeah, it's the setting that really draws me in to the AC games. And I can pretend that I'm getting a history lesson while playing. Origins was neat, and I appreciated that I was able to explore that region of the world/history, but I didn't find it that appealing; by contrast, Odyssey is extremely similar to Origins, gameplay wise, but I adore the setting, history, and mythology. Also Kassandra.

I was the opposite of the Origins vs Odyssey setting "debate" but that's purely personal preference. I love the contrasts that Origins gives in colours. The dusty yellows and tans to the vibrant greens and blues. I've also never been to Egypt in a game and have played many games and other media set in ancient Greece.

I would actually be down for an Assassin's Creed set in the 1980's and based around the Cold War, but that's like eighth on my list of settings to visit. I'd rather they get to literally anywhere in Asia or South America before we get Assassin's Creed: Perestroika. Though at this point, I guess the 80's is sort of historical tourism as well. I mean, maybe New York in the 80's isn't a big deal, but West Berlin? That's something worth recreating.

Meh. I’ll just watch Atomic Blonde again.

I'd like them to keep on the two year cycle (or even three or four) rather than annual but also really want every damn timeframe and location covered. I want this beautifully dumb series to go the way of the 22 Jump Street montage ending.

Eventually they'll cave to the endless internet cries for having a game set in Glorious Nippon, because we don't have enough games set there already.
