Coping with Coronavirus

firesloth, that's the cutest thing in the world.

The local fire and police departments of six surrounding towns staged a big vehicle parade around the hospital yesterday afternoon. It was kind of a touching salute from the people who are more typically seen as being on the 'front lines' of crisis.

I feel that. My daughter has been talking about her birthday party since her last birthday (she’s turning 4). Not sure how I’ll be able to break her little heart in two months.

My daughter’s 7th birthday is in a month. She already knows it can’t be anything like what she wants. Its hard to watch her struggle to come to terms with it. The problems are just so much bigger than a 6 year old can work with but she tries.

My daughter had her sixth birthday at the end of March. She'd been planning it for months and had intended to invite a bunch of her school friends for a party at a nearby indoor bounce house place. All that had to be canceled.

Instead, we told her that we'd have to do a quiet birthday at home with just us, and then we'd do a loud birthday with friends and family when we were able to. That helped her come to terms with things, and it's given her something to look forward to.

Yeah, as hard as this is on us, it's goddamn brutal on our kids.

It's the first time I've wished my daughter had a sibling - the lack of peer interactions is really affecting her - she's a super gregarious kid, and at 6, isn't really old enough for virtual interactions to work as well as firesloth's kids have it figured out.

Interesting. My impression has been the opposite with my kids (7 and 2). The 2yo is oblivious to this all and just continues to do his thing. The 7yo really misses school, homework (!! I keep telling her to hang onto that feeling), and her friends, but she does zoom/facetime stuff with both her class and her friend group, so it's been mostly fine after the initial shock of the situation wore off. It probably helps that she had a lot of facetime experience growing up since my family is all in the Seattle area and my parents wanted to talk to her weekly so she at least knew who they were.

My extrovert wife, on the other hand, would have it real hard if she wasn't also a nurse, so she's still working and getting some socialization in. The same goes for the extroverts who I work with. We've all been teleworking for the last month and there's a standing 2pm MS Teams meeting for people to hop on camera and chat with each other about whatever.

Introverts like me with moderate social anxiety are living the dream. You're saying I have to stay home and not socialize with anyone other than my wife and kids? Can I keep doing this after all the restrictions are lifted?

This is true.

Unless you're stuck in quarantine with an extrovert or two. Then it's concentrated hell.

Amen, sister.

I'd suggest we start a support group, but neither of us want that. Maybe a support group that works by NOT meeting?

And you assholes invite me, and I sit there for 45 minutes wondering when you all will show up.

NOT AGAIN, JON! I am not falling for that one again.

45 minutes of quietly sitting by yourself? Jealous!

Right? Someone please invite me to a private meeting and stand me up. I'll send you a thank you note and cookies.

Just saw a pic on Facebook of two kids playing ‘nail salon.’ Basically someone had drawn hands on a long length of cardboard and added nail outlines and the kids were sat there colouring the nails in.

I got a bit of bad news today. My 80 yo dad had to go in early this week for heart surgery - a valve replacement. He had some stents put in a couple weeks ago but his circulation was still having problems because one of his heart valves was sticking. That wasn't the bad news, though, because the surgery went well.

He got through the surgery fine, but he is apparently still having circulatory problems, because he started having cognitive issues while recovering. A physical therapist insisted they take him to an inpatient therapy center run by Tucson Medical Center. The way my mom describes it, he's kind of "in and out" of it. Last time she spoke with him he was himself, but when the nurses spoke with him he didn't know where he was, so he's not out of the woods yet.

His cardiologist has done all he can for now, so I am hopeful the physical and cognitive therapy will help with whatever is causing this post-surgery problem. They had done an ultrasound on his carotid before the surgery, but I haven't heard any details of that, which of course makes me worry more.

And of course, we can't visit him (Thanks, SARS-CoV-2! ), and he really wanted to go home, so he's upset right now. I've been visiting my parents every few days in recent weeks and talking through their sliding glass door, but I can't do that for my dad. One of my brothers got him some of his favorite bottled iced tea and the hospital was kind enough to take it to him. TMC is a one-story facility, so they were able to talk briefly through a small window in his room. He had to bushwhack through some desert landscaping though (assisted by a very nice TMC worker).

Today I think I'll just turn off my brain and deliver virtual cargo with virtual trucks through the virtual western US.

Sorry to hear that Ken. As someone who also hates Tucson, my wife and I are worried about her parents down there and have discussed what we'll have to do if they need help. We and my wife's other siblings are out of state as well.

Best of luck to your dad and your whole family.

Right? Someone please invite me to a private meeting and stand me up. I'll send you a thank you note and cookies.

I like the idea of a group video chat where we aim the cameras toward whatever game we're playing and don't really talk. It's nice just to feel like someone is nearby sometimes.

Best wishes for your dad, Ken.

Good idea... anyone want to watch me throwing stuff at the screen as some monster one-shots me again in Divinity Original Sin 2?

I didn't have such a good day yesterday. An older (mid 60s) acquaintance of mine who I used to play music with direct messaged me because I scoffed at a social media post suggesting Dr. Fauci needed to be fired and he wanted to know "why". I was then accused of "drinking the Kool aid" in all caps (irony, I know). And then he suggested I read up on the numbers from the CDC that prove it's no worse than a normal flu in terms of death rates. I needed to remind him that I work at a hospital as a clinical data analyst. I get the watch the numbers go up every day. Even with the measures in place we've had as many deaths in one month as we would have over an entire particularly bad flu year.

He then on social media posted a link to the CDC's history of the 1918 flu, stating that there was no lockdown in 1918 in addition to a world war, and we're all "snowflakes"... I proceeded to point out the link he sent directly stated that many cities enacted quarantines and mentioned those which did not such as Philly fared much worse than those who did, and that roughly 2 million Americans (adjusted for today's population) died of that flu. He then expressed his intent to take his elderly self to a 'liberty rally' in Boston. I feel bad because I can't help but think there is some element of depression and loneliness involved in enabling this kind of potentially self-destructive thinking. I am wavering between being sick of and lashing out at that kind of bullsh*t and maintaining some empathy for those that are reacting to feeling uprooted, cut off, and cornered.

I get where you're coming from. I was attempting to engage with people from my town on Facebook. It's mostly a lesson in futility and my wife and another neighbor scolded me to stop. The people on their cannot be helped and it's arguing with pigeons/pigs/whatever.

It's harder when you know them directly and would prefer not see them endanger their loved one(s). I don't know how they manage it (I would go insane), but his partner has zero in common when it comes to these issues and they basically live together peacefully by never bringing it up. But here he is announcing his intent to do something that could directly endanger her as well. I'm not even sure she knows about his intentions.

Man, I feel for a local business owner I know. He's definitely starting to lose it, calmness-wise.
He's definitely non-essential, but given the amount of exceptions and how well people are following guidelines, meaning not great, I can see why he's ready to jump on the open up everything bandwagon. Hopefully, he's just blowing off steam.

No real point to this, just realizing again how luck I am and the many ways this is tough on others near me. Let alone the rest of the world.

*Edit - Nevermind. He's gone full open it up. Damnit.

Scored some toilet paper on Walmart web site this morning. Should be here in 5 days. 3 rolls left in the house. Clock is ticking.

There's a lot of room between "open up everything" and "precautions are necessary but the current lockdown is excessive; it's time to relax some restrictions among low-risk communities in a planned, controlled way."

It's unfortunate that it sounds like he's gone with the former.

Yeah, and after seeing more updates his language is to the former but I think he's really only pushing to the later.
So more blowing off steam and trying to manage.
I feel for him.

Of course driving through town makes me think we're doomed anyway. Nice weather plus like a couple dozen max known infections in the county makes suburbanites relax distancing.

That's an insightful and empathetic way to look at it. Everyone's under stress right now and it's easy to see people who disagree with us as monsters. I commend you for taking the effort to see things from his point of view, even if you disagree with him.

I got an email this morning from our local art house theater (we only have one here; it's a small city) about the state-mandated closure of theaters, bars, restaurants, etc. In short, they're closing, and odds aren't great that they'll open again. They're going to try to weather the storm, but the closure is coming at the worst possible time. Spring is already a really hard season for movie theaters, and a forced closure of indefinite length could very well be the nail in the coffin.

I'm heartbroken. In normal times, I go out to the movies at least once at week. I have a special needs child, and my movie night out is my respite night. It's a huge boon to me for my mental health and has been for years. It's been tough to not go to the movies during the pandemic when I've most wanted that kind of stress relief, and now I'm crushed that when this is all over one of my favorite theaters might no longer be there. (Hell, let's be honest: this could kill the entire industry if it stretches on long enough.)

I'm just completely bummed out about this.

Looks like AMC, at least, isn't planning to reopen any locations until July, and other chains are expected to follow suit. No idea what's going to happen with the art house here or when theaters will be allowed to reopen. But even if they did, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable going. :/

Thanks.
It's definitely easier with someone you know and want to survive. This is opposed to some of the other aholes on Facebook. I am less empathetic towards them.

At least the theaters with ticketing could maybe enforce some kind of empty seat between parties.

Half capacity is better than nothing.

The complexity probably goes up from same household groups getting tickets.
