Playstation 5 Catch-All

The basic DualShock, yeah, but they completely redesigned it with the PS4. I just hooked my PS3 up again and let me assure you, there is a gulf between the DS3 and 4.

They had to redesign it to fit the haptic feedback hardware into it. Which if the Switch is any indication, will be largely forgotten even by first-party games fairly quickly.

I like the design, but indifferent on the colors, but I can see a lot of potential for different color options down the line which makes me happy. I am a bit concerned that the main console is going to be two tone black and white.

Count me in the camp that thinks it looks great. One thing I'm a little surprised at is the lack of paddles - when Sony released the Back Button Attachment for the DS4 a month-and-change ago, the assumption was that this was a way to bridge the functionality with the DS5. As far as I know none of the pictures released actually show the back, so it's still possible it has paddles and Sony's doubling up on the tease factor that seems to be the strategy for Playstation 5 press releases, but that would seem awkward, even for them.

As a PSVR user, I'm also surprised by the thin strip of illumination around the touch pad and no big light on front. They've previously said the all current PSVR games will work on the PS5, and the PSVR tracks the DualShock 4 using that front-of-the-controller spotlight; I'll be interested to see if the camera has problems finding the DS5 using its considerably smaller source of illumination.

(Portal 2's co-op is fantastic, btw! You should definitely try to correct that oversight.)

On VR, I wonder if they could do it similar to the way Nintendo does their motion controls in place of the light bar on ps5?

I’ve seen a rare picture of the controller side on and the buttons are as raised as on the current controller. The do look flush on the top down shot. I think this image explains the look of the controller. It’d be easy to manufacture themed controllers.

What's the button beneath the Playstation logo? (I assume the logo itself is the system button.)

Found the image. You can’t see that area.... actually you can. Looks like it’s a raised button in the shape of the logo ^^

But it looks like there's a pill-shaped button just beneath it, right?

Also, thanks for posting that image. That allays a lot of my concerns about the height of the face buttons.

I think it’s a microphone mute button. I saw a video (which I cant find now) that said the controller would support quick chat.

EDIT: Here's the video. Time stamp 4:12. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ilwip_...

Oh yes there is a pill shaped button.

I’m surprised the side view isn’t more prevalent. It looks much more like a sensible controller from the side.

It's a dedicated mute button for the built in mic.

The DS4 already uses internal gyros to sense motion (a legacy of when it debuted as the "SIXAXIS" controller, sans rumble). The light bar and camera are used in addition to that to calculate position, which is something gyros can't do.

The Wiii did the same thing, albeit partially reversed - the Wiimote had gyros to detect motion, and a camera to track what was incorrectly called the "sensor bar". In fact, the sensor bar was just two infrared lights that the Wiimote looked at - you could simply use two lit candles in place of it.

Oooo! I like that. I also like the idea of having a mic built into the controller assuming it works okay. Nice to have as a backup in case you're lazy. Hopefully, the mute button also works when you're using a headset.

Get ready for the “blow into the mic” game mechanic to make a comeback.

Ooh.. not a shocker, but I'm glad to see the move to USB-C charging

I'm disappointed about the lights on the side of the touchpad. I have to tape over all my DS4 lights because when I play in the dark they are distracting. Even on the lowest brightness setting, they are very bright in a dark room.

With the new design, it looks like there's no easy way to block those lights. Hopefully they'll provide a system setting that turns them off altogether. I don't know why they don't do that now. It would be trivially easy to automatically turn it on for games that require it and explain why.

Maybe it'll be possible to turn the light off.
In Steam, you can turn the light off in the DS4.

Is this really the final design? Because I remember this one for the PS3 and it never saw the light of day

That one for the PS3 was only ever rumored. This one for the PS5 was announced on the Playstation Blog. It's definitely what they're planning to go with right now.

Because that design was awful and nobody liked it.

This design might see tweaks but given that the Boomerang controller was also revealed over a year before the system was slated to launch, I'm assuming we're closer to final specs now.

I actually like the light on the DS4. In addition to being essential for PSVR, in general I only notice them when they're enhancing the moment - there will be a faint red tinge to the TV room when I'm low on health, or my surroundings will be flickering yellow when Lara Croft's carrying a torch; it's like the visual version of surround sound. I routinely play in a darkened room, and I've never found the light distracting. To me the only downside is the shortened battery life, but I have two DS4s and one's always in a charging stand, so if the one in my hand runs low I can swap it out in less than 20 seconds.

I realize some people don't like it (just like some people don't like rumble, which is equally lost on me), but it seems like I rarely see comments from people who don't have a problem with it, or like me actually find it adds a little bit to atmosphere and feedback. That may be because they're a minority, but my inclination is it's more a silent majority.

The vast majority of the games I play don't use the light for anything interesting, so in those cases it's just glare that I can't turn off and I can't change the color to make it less distracting. I agree that it's cool in the Tomb Raider games.

More controller light system settings would be nice, so everyone can have them the way they want them.

So, this Unreal 5 demo (which is wild by itself and worth watching) is allegedly running on PS5 hardware. Worth watching on the biggest monitor and highest definition you can manage.

Great, now we can have texture pop-in in 4K.
