Minecraft

Hey, i'm trying to set up a MC server to play with my niece to provide some remote childminding to my sis. Could anyone point me in the direction of how i would set up a small server for 4 people max and what i need. Don't mind paying a bit to make it easier on myself! Thanks:)

Mtxserv has been pretty reasonable for me, hosting our modded Minecraft servers. I could probably do better, for cheaper, if I wanted to really micromanage everything and run it under AWS or something... but for a plain vanilla server, you'd be looking at their lowest tier for $5/month. And you could upgrade it to the second tier ($10/mo) if your world grew absurdly huge and you started noticing some problems. They're a France-based company, and I see that they offer hosting in London and Paris data centers, plus various other locations across Europe. I do see that they're swamped with setting up new servers (wonder why...) so it might be a day or two before they could allocate a new one for you.

If you don't care much about modding for the group and it is not PS4 you could go the Minecraft Realms route. I have a realms server and my grand kids hop on it with their tablets and my daughter uses her xbox.

Oh yeah, I should've noted that the Mtxserv route would be (I think) for Java-client Minecraft only; it wouldn't work for the Win10, console, or mobile versions of Minecraft.

Thanks! We are on mine craft java, I should have said up front. I’m not needed to mod or anything, I just want to wander around and build little houses:)

Minecraft Realms are nice because any platform except Java can play nicely together there.

On the other hand, throwing more money at Microsoft might not be a goal you have, and realms are more than $5 a month.

For vanilla it might be easier to just host it yourself. If you've got a decent internet connection and the server only needs to be up when you're playing too, you can just host it on your machine. I'm doing exactly this with my niece.

The Minecraft server download is here:
https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/down...

To run it, I set up a .bat file with two lines in it:

java -Xmx1536M -Xms1536M -jar server.jar pause

To allow your nieces/nephews to connect, you'll need to give them your machine's IP address. Getting it is as easy as asking Google, "what is my IP?" That number will be the server address they use when connecting.

If you have a router you'll probably also need to forward a port 25565. Procedure for that will vary from router to router, but it should be fairly simple once you're logged into the router's interface.

And, finally, to connect to your own server, you need to use the address, "localhost".

I've used Shockbyte for a long time to run a server for my kids and school friends. You can eventually mod if you want, but it's a pretty simple setup.

There are actually two versions of Realms you can subscribe to. One for Bedrock Edition and one for Java Edition. The java one runs $7.99 per month.

I ran a server on my PC for 4 or 5 people for a while and it worked well. Didn't even really have much of a performance impact on other things as I recall.

I'm about to jump back in after years. I don't know my old login info so I assume I purchase a new copy here and then where do I find mods nowadays? Half the fun for me was always trying out new mod packs.

I've had many hundreds of hours of fun with the packs found on the FTB launcher and/or the Twitch client (Mods, Minecraft, Browse Modpacks).

Thanks, I'll give that a try!

You can also look at CurseForge and Spigot's Resources.

I'm running a 1.15 server for family (using Spigot). Anyone have suggestions for plugins? Most stuff seems to be for 1.12 or 1.13.

Please excuse my ignorance. I tried Googling first but got confused so I figured I’d ask some experts directly.

Background: I’m interested in trying out Minecraft with my 6 year old. I’d like to play couch coop / split screen with him so I can help walk him through the game. My understanding is none of the PC versions have this natively, but it is possible to get it working with a combination of mods on the Java version (specifically JoyPad) and multiple accounts. I think the console versions have this natively and would “just work”.

Question: Am I better off just doing a console version because it’s easy, cheaper, and “just works” to do simple split screen coop play? Or is it worth the hassle to get controllers and split screen modded with the PC Java version for future mod play? Anything else I’m not considering?

For reference: I have an OG Xbox One that I was thinking of trying with Game Pass to get Minecraft. Also have a PS4 and Switch if those versions are better or something. I have some experience with mods so I don’t think it’d be a big deal to get the PC version modded, but I really like the idea of “just works” so I don’t need to worry about figuring this out with all the other stressors going on. Also, I’ve never played Minecraft before.

Thanks for any advice!!

The Bedrock Edition supports cross-play between Windows and XBox One.

GamePass is a pretty hassle free way to try Minecraft if you already have the hardware (Xbox One and/or windows PC in this case) and incredibly cheap for the first month.

You can always decide to switch later if you want mods.

We started on Bedrock and never switched but my kids watch a lot of YouTube videos about Minecraft and are always asking why they can’t play the mods they see. I might buy the java version for them to try one day but right now there are usually 4 people in this house playing together and my wife and kids prefer to split-screen on the big screen.

Having played both Java and Bedrock versions I have to say that the Bedrock versions runs so much better. The controller support is nice as well. Java with controller support required 3rd party tools and was frequently problematic for me back when I was playing that version.

So I've started playing this again (I looked a few pages back and it's been 5 years since I last posted in here).

I started a new world 4 nights ago and have been watching a Youtube Survival Guide that's pretty good. Those videos help me with some of the new stuff and stuff I just never bothered to learn if it was in the game the last time I played.

The main thing that's holding me back right now is I've only found one cluster of diamonds in 4 nights of searching. I'm going down to altitude 11- I'm mining efficiently. I've found a huge underground cavern and I'm working on making it safe so zombies and creepers don't fall down from above and attack me. I've found a abandoned mine and explored it pretty fully. I've found 5 emeralds, lots of red stone, some lapis lazuli, etc. But only one cluster of 5 diamonds.

Anyway, I've taken a break from mining for diamonds to get some sugar cane to farm and some chickens to raise along with my sheep.

Anyone know if turtles are good for anything? I've got 3 that have been near my homebase since the start, and I've just left them there lying on the beach.

EDIT: My plan worked: 1) Post to complain that I can't find diamonds 2) go back and play more and find a bunch of diamonds. Also found more abandoned mine areas to explore but it's gotten too late- that will have to wait for tomorrow.

What video series?

Channel is called Pixlriffs. I think the playlist for this series is over 200 videos long. I'm currently on part 13. The these have been a great crash course in everything one needs to know when starting up, including introductions to the Nether, potions and enchanting- all stuff I never dealt with in my past Minecraft experiences.

The new abandoned mineshaft I’m exploring has two cave spider spawners. It’s been tough going. First time I was trying to get the area lit up to stop spawning and was dealing with poison from the spiders while trying to hold of zombies and creepers coming out of the dark.

Next time down was a little better. Can’t get near the spawners though as they’re both in awkward spots. Hopefully I figure a way to wall them up, or just get close enough to destroy them.

Busy weekend. I had to go a couple islands over to find cows. I didn't know a good way to get them back to base across water, so I set up a second home there until I had 46 leather to make enough books to for an enchanting table and 15 bookshelves to max enchanting.

My first enchantment was immediately combined with a magic book I had fished out of the ocean to make an Unbreaking III, Sweeping Edge III, Knockback II, Sharpness III Diamond Sword (!!!).

I got around to building up my base home to a nice 3 story house. Not perfect, but good enough for now.

I spent some time fishing while a fox swam in the ocean for several days. Then about a minute after the following screenshot was taken it got into my chicken coup and killed two-thirds of my chicken. It then became the first kill with my brand new enchanted sword.

Then I fished a bit more, and pulled out the following fishing rod- possibly the best possible in the game?

And somehow in the meantime I was able to light up the giant cavern under my home fairly well to keep me safe while mining/exploring down there.

I spent over 3 hours last night just fixing up my Minecraft home. Replacing cobblestone for stone brick, adding grass to my yard where there was stone/sand/gravel, putting stone walls to place my torches on so they weren’t just sticking into the ground, fixing stairs, and stuff like that. Looked at the clock and all of a sudden it was 1AM.

This morning I finally crafted a map and tried to use it to finally get away from relying on landmarks, etc. while exploring. I think they’ve changed how they work since the video series I’m watching was recorded because I got a map from my base to my secondary base with the cows, but when I tried to zoom it out I got a brand new map with nothing filled in.

That’s when I encountered my first pillagers- five guys attacking me with crossbows around my base at dark. I killed them and got an ominous banner and a strange icon on my screen. I’m clueless about what this means so I guess I am going to hit the wiki.

If you don't clear it the next time you go into a village there will be a raid there. A few waves of pillagers attack. You can clear it by drinking milk which you get with a bucket and a cow.

There are a lot of illogical things in Minecraft but to drink milk so that pillagers are no longer going to attack you has to be the most random.

Tonight I filled in over 2/3rds of a map exploring my world. Most exciting things were two villages, neither had a librarian or cartographer to be found. I did find a weaponsmith who trades 15 coal for an emerald so I'm planing to go back there. I think I saw a underwater temple in an ocean, but steered clear of it for now. And I got a buried treasure map from a shipwreck and found it after destroying the beach where the X was.

So far no deserts, jungle or badlands biomes anywhere to be found.

Drinking milk clears all temporary status effects: poison, hunger, fire resistance, mining fatigue, haste, etc. Illager Raid ("Bad Omen") is a new kind of status effect.

Minecraft Bedrock RTX beta will be available on Windows 10 starting April 16th

Rad!

Finally a reason to fire up Bedrock. Should be fun for a few minutes.
