The Sword of Damocles

Section:

The time has finally come. No more safety net, no take backs. Welcome to the new Gamers With Jobs! There's still some question of whether or not the site will crumple under its own weight once more traffic starts streaming in, but so far it's been ticking along pretty well. Despite the sword dangling over our collective heads, I'd say we're optimistic.

We are experiencing sporadic bouts of sluggishness when loading pages, but Jeff is working hard to nail down any lingering speed bumps. If you spot any major problems or anything that might help us optimize the site, do let us know! Also note that it may take a day or two for gamerswithjobs.com to move over to the new server space. Until that happens, some images (like the Conference Call and articles) may not appear on the site.

I've been away on business this week, so today I pulled up iTunes to try and get all of my podcasts for the week, and I noticed the GWJ's rss feed doesn't seem to be working. I went to the Podcast page and chose the rss button, but when I put the feed into iTunes it tells me it's an invalid podcast feed.

Otherwise, I love the new site!

I'm making a note here: huge success.

Looks good guys. And I always love that new website smell...

Once the DNS (domain name server) change has spread itself through the net, it should start working again. i.e. gamerswithjobs.com actually works as the website URL for me now, so the podcast feed works, too.

I don't know if it's a bug or just an unfortunate design decision, but the first post in every thread prints at the top of every page, which I find distracting and annoying.

That might make sense for polls and for front page articles, but I don't think it should be the default behavior.

I also gotta say: that orange is ugly as hell. The more I see it, the less I like it.

Very nice job. Best of luck under stress!

Now to see if I can finally upload my profile picture...

Edit: Yay, it worked!

If there be a way to break it, I'll find it. Muwha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Looks awesome.

GWJ 2.0 = the new hotness

Found it! Kneeling servant, lower right corner of picture: sideboob. Pretty sure those three pixels are a nipple. So, what were you saying about a new site design?

Congratulations, on a job well done guys. The site looks awesome.

The tracker seems to be broken, as well as the account based one. Not all threads show up in it which you can easily check. For instance, currently the four threads at the top of Everything Else is missing.

It's actually 3.3 now.

Niiiiice! Great success!

Just confirmed this for myself.

Check out the tracker page:

Now at the same time, here's the games forum:

By timestamp, all of those threads in the games window should be in the top 10 on the tracker, but we're missing 4 of the 6 threads. Curiously, we get the PSP:Echochrome thread in the tracker list and it's actually third on the games list.

Indeed, I had a play with the test and the niggles it appears has been ironed out, the site loads fine too in no time. It's a nice!

Darmok, and Jalad at Tanagra!

And the move has made the url in itunes for the podcast go all broke and busted like my dreams.

I don't know if you guys ever noticed this on the old site, but the tracker was cached every 15 minutes I think. So that may be what's happening here.

I'd guess it's more than that. Check out the games list and the tracker I posted. Viewing an older cached copy of the tracker page could explain the two newest Games topics being left out, but it doesn't explain why the Burnout and Audiosurf topics don't show up. Their timestamps would place them in the tracker list ahead of the Microprose and CoD topics.

Here are two additional screenshots with some markup. In between the two underlined threads in the tracker you should have the four marked as missing. The Gamespot thread is also missing and should be above them.

The links at the top of the forums and articles (the ones that say "Home >> Forums >> etc") won't highlight unless my mouse is right on the top pixel of them. Putting the mouse over the text normally, it's unclickable. I'm using IE7.

So, I have some feedback now after using the site for a bit. I really miss the forum breadcrumbs at the bottom of the page. They made it much easier to jump back up to the parent forum of the thread I was currently reading.

Edit: Nevermind. Sort of... I'm seeing the breadcrumbs on threads in the Gaming forum, but not on threads in the News & Front Page Articles forum.

I already forgot what the old site looked like. Good sign, I guess. Cheers!

The only thing I've noticed is that the "popular threads" sidebar never seems to change. It's been the same five threads for the last 15 hours. I know because I sat here hitting reload over and over.... no I didn't.

It looks good guys. Good job!

Turn the clocks forward!! Or at least yell at the host to do it.

Nice and crisp, love the new design. And I can't wait for the next podcast!!

Keep up the great work...

I like the look, but there's this massive space in the middle of the page below the banners at the top, where there is some stuff on the left hand side, and I have to scroll about two pages down to get to the articles or the list of forums or whatever page I'm on.

What browser are you using, and on what OS?

Windows XP and IE7 (Yes, I really am that un-cool!)
