Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Ori and the Will of the Wisps just launched for Xbox One and Windows 10, and even better is it's on Gamepass!

Blind Forest is one of my favourite games of the past decade and I've been eagerly awaiting this sequel. Anyone else played it yet?

I fired it up for 30 minutes last night and I was really disappointed at the performance on Xbox One S. A lot of the time it just feels slow. It still looks beautiful, music is great, hits you in the feels, but I'm not sure I can play as it is at the moment. Hopefully a patch clears it up otherwise I might be waiting until the Series X to play this.

Destructoid review said after doing a restart on the Xbox the slowness went away. Might be worth a shot. Do the "restart" in the options menu instead of just turning on and off.

"So here's the bad news: I played both versions of the game, and encountered framerate issues on my Xbox One X (my PC tests, which are indicative of this review, were cleaner), but it's a weird situation. Upon first booting up the game I noticed slowdown throughout, as well as framerate drops in a few major areas. After re-booting my machine almost all of that cleared up throughout the rest of my subsequent playthroughs, so it remains to be seen if it's a temporary bug that will pop up for some people."

That intro.. they are pretty much the Pixar/Disney of video games.

Spoiler:

A bit of How To Train Your Dragon in this one

Picked it up tonight on Steam. Looking forward to digging in this weekend.

I'm only a few hours in, but when you get a chance to buy an upgrade, you have quite a few options. I bought one which auto attacks enemies, and it is ok. Another site recommended buying Spirit Smash first, so that will probably be my next upgrade.

The game proceeds at a good clip. I'm getting anew upgrade every 20 minutes or so. Quite a lot to do!

It was either this or perhaps a patch between going to bed and getting home from work because it's playing smoothly now.

I've never been interested enough to try one of their games but I'm excited to see what moon studios do with the ARPG genre in their next game.

I’ve resisted Gamepass and gaming subscriptions in general - but this is testing my resolve. Buy it now for $50 (NZ) on Steam, or get Gamepass for a month for $1.
Or - just play any of the dozens of games I’ve already got. Maybe I’ll just do that instead

This game is awesome. I've never played the first, but just spent 2 hours on this. Beautiful can't describe how great this game looks.

Not helping

Spirit Smash - thumbs up!

Definitely go back and play the original after you're done. It's more of the same, and very cheap now. Absolutely worth a playthrough!

I had first my first really tough boss fight, as it has a second phase were I couldn't heal. I did feel myself getting better and better at the fight, but it was very frantic. As I don't yet have all the upgrades, I wonder if other builds would have had an easier time.

I continue to have random pauses in the game. Restarting the game helps.

Quick tips:

Before going to Luma Pools, buy Water Breath (unlimited underwater breathing) from Opher.

On chase sequences and boss fights, you have an option on the pause menu to "abandon challenge".

You can warp from anywhere to a warp point.

Are you playing on Xbox ?

I just discovered the PC and Xbox version use the same cloud save so you can jump between the two.

Game is so good...

Im still playing. I've never been so engrossed in a platformer before. Not even Mario.

I'm on an Xbox One S. Even with the technical problems, the game is great.

The first one is spectacular too! The combat isn't as interesting but the platforming and puzzles are.

Edit: What other attack abilities are people finding useful besides spirit smash? I have been investing in other areas but figure I should vary it up.

Me too. They come back pretty quickly after a restart though. Didn't have that issue for the first few hours but it's starting to get pretty frustrating.

Wha!?

More impressions:

One of my favorite spirit shards is Overflow, which converts excess life to energy, and vice versa. It can be found in Silent Woods.

I just got the new mobility ability in Baur's Reach. I can't wait to watch speed runs of this game.

Overflow sounds very useful, I will have to remember that. I just completed a tough speed run challenge and calling it a night.

Ori couldn't have come at a better time for me. It's a beautiful and engrossing getaway game to pull me away from the current crisis. I'm just worried I'm going to beat it and other games I am looking forward to will be delayed!

Finished after 19 hours played. Absolutely great game, as good as the first, with some fun new stuff added in.

100% completed all zones and collectibles, but didn't 100% the game due to not wanting to grind out money to purchase the remaining shard upgrades.

Overall, I think the escape sequences were easier than the first game, or maybe I'm remembering the original as harder than it was. The boss fights were surprisingly easy, as I one-shotted all of them, playing on normal difficulty.

Just finished at 12 hours on the dot. 99% completion. Great game. I was floored by how good it looked from start to finish. It is easily the best looking 2D game I've ever played, but it even gives the best AAA games a run for their money.

I was surprised how many of the new combat additions felt influenced by Hollow Knight, particularly the healing, badges, and basic sword melee. Everything related to actual platforming felt much like the first game, but improved in almost every aspect. Bash was the pinnacle ability in Ori 1, but it's just the start of the fun stuff you get in WotW.

I was a tiny bit let down by the length. The developers spent a lot of time talking about how WotW was 2-3 times bigger than Ori 1. While that is probably true in terms of the size of the world, it doesn't feel like it because of how quickly you are able to move through the game. In one way, that's a great thing because there's very little that feels like filler content, but there were a few abilities that I received late into the game that I barely got to use. I would have loved for some of the late game stages to be a bit more developed so I could have had more time to play with them.

WotW was much easier than the first game. I finished with 87 deaths vs. a little over 300 in Blind Forest. The first game could border on frustrating in parts, so I was okay with the drop in difficulty. It still wasn't easy, and it should be much more accessible than Blind forest was.

@Dyni

But how many of Blind Forest those deaths were at the first Ginso tree!

Normal mode might be easy, but hard is hard yo. You die insanely fast to everything. I just left the first area and I've already died a few dozen times. If you want a challenge it's definitely waiting there for you.

I died a lot yesterday to a late game chase sequence. It was as hard as any in the original.

Indeed, the final chase sequence is very unforgiving but the rest are pretty balanced and/or short.

I finished today. Great game!

I didn't fine much use of the optional combat abilities. The only ones I bought that I used much was the hammer and the sentries. I imagine high skilled users would find a use for them, but I found what worked for me and kept it most the game.

I'm up to the part where

Spoiler:

you have to go and find the 3 wisps.

Can I complete each in any order?
