F1 2020 Season Spoiler Filled Race Talk

Yeah, Palmer and Buxton are far and away my favorite commentators/analysts in the professional media. There are definitely some good voices in the more amateur/YouTube realm too, like Chain Bear and the F1 Word guy.

Finished DtS Season 2. Really good stuff.

Still have the last two episodes to go, but yeah, generally agree. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't dig into the truly mind boggling drama of the Rich Energy situation, but I suppose there's only so much time -- and so much bullsh*t litigation that you are willing to open yourself up to. Similarly, there seemed to a LOT of meat left on the story bone about Ferrari for what might have been CYA style reasons. That is, you don't really want to dig into the weird story about their probably rule breaking engine if you want to have access to them for next season, and having kid gloves on when talking about their driver politics is probably helpful there too. (Although I suppose the last episode, which looks like it will be all about the Brazilian Grand Prix, might touch on that a bit more?)

Also, while I really loved the Sainz episode and think they totally made the right choice focusing on him in their coverage of McLaren, it's a shame that they didn't have even just a little time to throw in some of the joy and silliness that Lando brings to the party. Quite understandable, I suppose, when you're trying to find the most compelling stories to tell in just ten 30 to 40 minute episodes -- "rookie driver has a pretty good but not outstanding year, and also is a super fun guy" isn't quite the thing that makes that brutal cut.

Yeah, Lando was sorely missed. Could have at least shown his heartbreak at Spa, that is a classic moment.

Red Bull certainly got the most focus of any team, for various reasons, but I'll admit I took a certain amount of joy from the fact that Kvyat was entirely snubbed. I actually really liked that guy, and was super stoked for his podium, until he opened his mouth publicly about Albon not being "that great." Was a super bad look.

Missed Alfa, too, but I mean it's not like Kimi is going to sit down for any lengthy interviews.

I'm not entirely sure why, but I'm rooting for Renault to do well this year.

Maybe you just want to see Ricciardo succeed? I know I do.

But McLaren are my dudes.

McLaren all the way!!

EDIT: Soft spot for Vettel though...

Yeah, Kimi is my favorite driver, but I don't have any particular love of Alfa.

Caught up on DtS and boy howdy did they pretty much Skip the entire Rich Energy thing. Which is too bad because it was hilarious.

Like... I like this, but I also remember buying Planet Coaster and feeling like the only "correct" way to play it was with the insane attention to detail some YouTubers give it. Like, Frontier does amazing things, but I would say their games lack a certain level of... not "polish" but that they can replicate the "sink or swim" vibe of Paradox games. Very intimidating to newcomers, I mean.

McLaren has pulled out of the GP this weekend due to a confirmed case of coronavirus:

There are folks who believe there will be others pulling out as well(eyes on Ferrari and Alpha Tauri because of their Italian connections).

Hopefully their employee gets better! It sucks that they have to pull out though.

They should cancel the race, in my opinion. Having teams run zero cars and getting zero points honestly just screws up the standings at the end of the year. Other leagues in various sports are just cancelling everything right now. Formula E, for example, has cancelled all of it autocross events, err, races I mean, for the next two months.

edit: Maybe let the teams that are already there and ready to race run, and perhaps award points in the Drivers' Championship but not the Constructors?

It's cancelled.

Honestly, how did it take them this long to make that call.

Yep
Formula 1 official tweet

The teams spent so much money to get to Australia for nothing. Cancelling is smart, but damn they should have done it last week...

Full release

Waiting until the last minute: Always a bad look.

entire sports leagues around the world are cancelling or suspending, makes no sense they waited so long

Speaking of Bahrain:

Pretty cool idea. NASCAR did something similar today, running an entire race on iRacing.

Also, apparently at one point one of the commentators said "The cars are equal that's why the Williams is able to pass" which is just LOL.

Started a thread to see if we can get some folks jonesing for sports to maybe play in an online league or tourney is a sport you like.

I didn’t mention racing games, but they would also be a great option.

I watched that virtual gp, way more entertaining than the real thing

Motorsport Manager is on super-ultra-mega sale on Steam right now, I just pulled the trigger on it.

It's pretty good!

Thanks for the heads up! Purchased.

Well since we don't have actual racing, here's the first trailer for F1 2020

Can create your own 11th team!
Split-screen
The new circuits are added (I have questions about this, though)

UPDATE: I am VERY BAD at this game.

Tried F1 2019 on the PS4 on a lark, and even with all the settings set to the easiest level, I could not finish a single lap at any semi-reasonable speed.

Same here, but it gets better fairly quickly. But even then half the time the lap time doesn't count because I left the track for a nanosecond

Did you try racing in something other than a 2019 F1 car? Those are insanely fast and if you're also trying to learn the track layout at the same time it can be... frustrating.

The old cars handle poorly, to say the least. The sweet spot, for me, is the Brawn GP car. There's no halo so you can see clearly from cockpit view, it's relatively slow compared to the current cars, and you get to listen to the V10. So basically it's the best possible experience.

Private testing plan could prove hugely expensive for Formula One

Formula One’s plan to test everyone at a circuit as a condition of returning to racing will involve a huge cost outlay as private tests are sought to avoid health service suppliers. Even with grands prix held behind closed doors, more than 1,000 people per venue would need to be tested.

F1 hopes to begin the delayed season in Austria subject to constraints imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Organisers hope to hold up to 18 races, beginning with a double-header on 5 July that is likely to be followed by a further two races at Silverstone. Even behind closed doors, large numbers of personnel will still have to be present at the meetings and will be required to test negative for the virus.

Stuart Pringle, the managing director of Silverstone, confirmed that plans were already being put in place. “F1 is talking about their need to implement some sort of testing regime if they are to take the championship on its global travels,” he said. “That seems to be a necessity and it won’t be straightforward or cheap. F1 feels it needs to be clear that everybody in the paddock environment is testing negative.”

It is understood the sport will be paying to perform the testing and would be sourcing the required equipment privately from specific companies that are not supplying to the health service.

gonna be a weiiiird summer.

Alright motorsports fans, answer me a noob question. What the hell does it mean to "rubber in" a track? And why does track temperature matter so much?
