[News] Coronavirus

A place to discuss the now-global coronavirus outbreak.

Ugh. That "native" sh*t is so obnoxious.

MD is under state of emergency as four cases in Montgomery County confirmed.

So... Olympics?

There's been a lot of internal discussion about cancellation.

I'm still skeptical about them actually cancelling it, that'd be money out of the IOC's hands, and money is literally the only thing on God's Green Earth they care about.

Does every state do this? I know Oregon does. Idaho is starting to get that way. Is there a "native" bumper sticker for every state?

Native NYCers don't drive

From my experience the coastal cities, that I have been to, aren't like that. They are usually made out of a mix of out of staters anyways. I went to Denver for the first time last year not knowing it was actually a thing but found out pretty fast.

Edit: I'm not sure if its a thing with non-coastal cities as I hate being land locked! Minneapolis was not like that though.

And down goes SXSW!

I feel like it's cancellation is very relevant to our "natives" vs. "transplant" discussion.

Now we have a cruise ship with 21 new cases approaching San Francisco.

Well Trump's CDC visit was something.

He was asked if he ever considered not having campaign rallies because of the outbreak. He responded by saying he hasn't and then boasted that he "hasn't had any problems filling them" and that there were always "tens of thousands of people standing outside them." When asked if that concerned him Trump said "it doesn't bother me and it doesn't bother them."

He was asked if he wanted to allow the 3,000 people currently being held on a cruise ship outside of San Francisco to leave after one person died and several were infected. He responded he'd rather leave them on the ship because "I like the numbers being where they are. I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship. That wasn't our fault." Dude claims we live in the wealthiest country on the planet with the best healthcare system and he wants to bring back plague ships so his numbers don't look bad.

When asked why he gutted the government's pandemic preparedness over the last three years he said "I just think this is something that you can never really think is going to happen."

And it wouldn't be a Trump presser if he didn't claim he knew more about the coronavirus than everyone at the CDC because his uncle was a "super genius" professor at MIT and he "really gets this stuff." Bonus points for him claiming that every scientist there asked him "how do you know so much about this?" and then saying "maybe I have a natural ability, maybe I should have done that instead of running for president." During a meeting of drug company CEOs on Monday Trump didn't believe multiple people telling him would take a year to 18 months to develop a vaccine and kept trying to insist it could be done in a few months.

The sh*tshow starts about 20 minutes in.

I think it's fairly likely.

Like I said, I'll be shocked. SXSW is one thing, but this is four years of planning and investment.

A confirmed case in Indianapolis and another in Lexington, KY. The Indianapolis case is a male that isn’t in one of the “risk groups” so he isn’t old. Additionally, he just returned from an “event in Boston” this past weekend. It is speculation on my part, as I’m sure there were a lot of events in Boston this past weekend, but it certainly made me think about the annual PAX plague and whether that is the Boston event he was at this year.

My workplace (headquartered in Daly City, CA, my office in RTP) just announced closures of North America offices for the remainder of March. Everyone is to work from home. We're only 5,000ish folks world-wide, but I've certainly never experienced this level of precaution.

"I just think this is something that you can never really think is going to happen."

Every. Facepalm.

Someone needs to ask him on camera what he thinks of all the dead people who died because he is an idiot.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Think of your health!

Today, on CNN

4:25 p.m: Minnesota reports first coronavirus case

5:20 p.m: First coronavirus case in Oklahoma

6:35 p.m: Connecticut reveals first coronavirus case

7:18 p.m: First coronavirus case in Kentucky reported

8:05 p.m: Nebraska reports first coronavirus case

8:46 p.m: First confirmed case of coronavirus in Hawaii

Madagascar's showing a lot more patience than I thought they would.

I could see them holding events in closed stadiums but that kind of blows up the financial incentive.

Arnold Classic 86'd the Expo and is only allowing spectators for the finals on Sat/Sunday. Otherwise, family only for competitors.

We were first!

Suck it, Oklahoma.

The NBA's telling teams to prepare for games without fans. Yes, I know this is an article on an NFL blog, dammit.

There was an idiot on the Vegas Strip today hawking “coronavirus” masks. Surprise!! They were just normal medical masks, thankfully I didn’t see anyone buy any.

But man am I seeing a lot of hand washing and sanitizer use. The funniest one was the volunteer in the Mac King magic show pulling out a tiny Purell bottle in the middle of a trick. He also mentioned that his show was emptied then normal.

CNN has a video about how Trump has been helping to "sow confusion" about the epidemic, from things like saying it's under control to blaming Obama for not being prepared enough. This comes as no surprise to any of us.

The really scary part, though, is the lady they interview at the end who says she doesn't think the virus is real and when asked about the reports of the two people who died in Washington says she doesn't "trust anything the Democrats do".

Olympics start July 24th? I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that they still have enough lead time.

Honestly couldn't they wait until the end of May even before making an official call?

Going back to TP hysteria. What I don't get is how much TP do people use? My purchase cadence for TP is like 3-4 times a year for 2 people. It's not exactly a main commodity for me.

You'll all be laughing on the other side of your butts when you realise a roll of toilet paper is worth 50 bottle caps.
